How many wrestlers are dual sport athletes in your area?

Good Luck to Dakota Thacker as he begins his Senior seasons.

Editor's note: This is the second in a series on key high school football players for the 2013 season.

DAKOTA THACKER, NG, BLOOMINGTON SOUTH

The skills that allowed Bloomington South’s Dakota Thacker to become a semi-state wrestling champion are precisely the skills that new Panthers coach Mo Moriarity admires most.

Thacker is tough. He’s strong. He’s quick and he’s disciplined. They’re all attributes that will make Thacker a player to watch on South’s defensive line this fall.

WHY YOU SHOULD CARE: After finishing fifth at the state wrestling meet in the 182 pound class, Moriarity and the Panthers are hoping that Thacker can be a disruptive force as the team’s starting nose guard in 2013.

Thacker, a senior, played both ways a year ago, rushing for 94 yards on 22 carries, and making 18 tackles — including five for a loss — as a linebacker. He showed how adept he can be at penetrating an offensive line in the 2012 season opener, when he blocked a 41-yard field goal attempt to help set up South’s first score in a 34-20 victory over Bedford North Lawrence. It was the Panthers’ lone win of the season.

WHAT HE DOES WELL: Moriarity likes his work ethic, and certainly, the discipline of being one of the state’s top wrestlers plays into that.

“One thing he’s got going for him is wrestling for (South coach) Royce Deckard,” Moriarity said. “Royce demands a lot. You’re not going to run any type of practice that will phase him after wrestling for Royce Deckard.”

He’s what Moriarity calls a high motor player — one that doesn’t take plays off and knows how best to use his quickness and strength to cause problems up front.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR: He’s already been creating problems for the offensive line in South’s team camp this week, giving Panthers center Isaac Barrow a challenge with each snap.

“Centers will have to snap it quick and then block a guy, who’s a very big, very strong wrestler,” Moriarity said. “We’ve been talking to our centers, saying, ‘You won’t see anyone much better than this guy. He’s going to create havoc for most teams.” HT Mike Miller
