Merrillville officiating

There were numerous calls missed, Kayla had a stack, we had an overtime situation with the ref not knowing the rules, I recall at least 2 situations where the back-up ref had to change the calls. I realize I'm not doing the job, but I feel the refs were not up to the challenge. Not but a few times did I see a ref hit the mat to decide a pin. Maybe its just me being critical I'd like to hear some feedback on this.

I seen a ref at the Mooresville Regional do the same thing.  He would blow the whistle on a pin and both wrestlers would get up wondering what just happened.  It seems to me that you guys had the same ref.  It was kind of confusing to the kid that was pinning a kid and then having the whistle blown to stop the action and then finding out that he won. The look on the winning kids face told the whole story.  Maybe it is just me but I thought that when a ref  was indicating a pin he blows the whistle and slaps the mat.  Maybe I'm wrong but please correct me if I am.

Does it matter that much? There was still a fall, so does it really matter if he slaps the mat and blows the whistle or just blows the whistle?

I saw a match where the top man had the bottom man flat on his stomach with some kind of turk in--something that had the bottom man's legs crossed over. The bottom man was completely immobile, and the top man was just sitting there and not moving off the hips. They called the bottom man for stalling. It was a terrible call. The top man has the responsibility to move off the hips and attempt a to turn in that situation. The bottom man couldn't do anything because of how the top man had his legs.

One of the worse calls I saw yesterday was at the 220 pound ticket round match. I felt bad for the McCutcheon wrestler (Kult) I believe is his name. The score was 1-1 with 40 seconds left in the match and was called for his 1st stalling while having a pushing match with the Merrillville wrestler. Agree but both should have been called for stalling but unfortunately the McCutcheon wrestler got the raw end of the deal. Okay knowing this the McCutcheon wrestler became very aggressive and took 3 shots while the Merrillville wrestler kept backing up the whole time while not taking any shots and being on the defense but you probably know what's coming the McCutcheon kids gets called for stalling again with about 13 seconds left in the match. So now the score was 2-1 and the McCutcheon wrestler shot 2 more times and Again the Merrillville wrestler kept backing away.  The match ended 2-1.  I don't know either of these young men but felt really bad for the McCutcheon wrestler who was on the offense and did what he was suppose to do but ends up  getting screwed. Did anyone else see this?

My standard response to all of the complaints about the officiating:

http://www.ihsaa.org/dnn/Officials/Licensing/tabid/572/Default.aspx

why shouldnt the response be for the officials to get better and train and work on their craft?  that is what coaches and wrestlers are told...it seems officials always get a pass and common answer is for someone else to get their license.  refs are paid profession, not a volunteer.  i am not saying they make much, but they do get paid.  and for the record, referring a wrestling match is not easy, and I believe it gets harder as the wrestling advances in the state tournament.

I don't mean to be confrontational but I didn't see the officiating as all that bad.  I had no horse in this race, but sure I saw a few that I didn't agree with.  But good god that would be a long stressful day to be an official at the semi state.  Everybody is going to make some mistakes.  It's just when it goes against your wrestler, that the mistake is magnified.  Especially in the ticket round.  Couldn't pay me enough to be an official at this level.  Hardest job on the planet as far as I'm concerned.  Easy to bitch about the officiating, much harder to don a striped uniform and have thousands of people yelling at you.  I did see an official at Merrillville cost a McCutcheon kid the match in the ticket round.  At 220 the score was tied 1-1 and neither kid did a darn thing through the entire match and both had been warned for stalling.  Both were backing up at times, and with 10 seconds left he awarded the Merrillville kid a point for absolutely no reason.  Not sure it would have happened if it weren't a Merrillville kid.  Merrillville coach is a fantastic coach but has a way of getting in the heads of the officials.  This guy decided the match instead of letting the boys work it out.  I don't mind mistakes, I just hate seeing an official step in and decide it himself.  In conclusion, other than a few human mistakes, I thought the men in stripes did as good a job as the officials at any other semi state.

You know the funny thing about that match is, if you take the penalty points away for stalling on both wrestlers, the match ends with the Merrilville kid winning 1-0.

Maybe its a matter of the refs doing their proper warm-up drills before starting to competition.  This gentleman clearly is preparing himself of the level of competition he is about to officiate.  Note not only his focus maneuverability, but also his attention to detail when it comes to visualization of match calls.  Like any good warm up it starts slow but really gets going in the middle.  Maybe he should be at the next officials clinic help organize the proper pre-match routine so the refs are ready to make tough calls early on in the competition.

The Zebra's are getting hammer so I thought I would lighten the situation up for them.

Good point.  I didn't realize that the McCutcheon kid didn't get his escape.  That does does make a difference in my heart and mind.  But still the last 10 seconds really?

I'll bet if the officials got on here and said things about coaches and fans there would be an uproar. Why is there a double standard?

This is why I didn't name the officials, wrestlers, or weight class in my post. I have a lot of respect for officials and realize they are only human, and they're trying to do the best they can. That being said, I think it is legitimate to discuss in general terms calls you saw that you disagreed with. As long as you're not identifying or attacking anyone I don't see the problem.

How do you know they don't????    You must know everyone that post stuff on here.

I think the overall performance of the officials was a B+. My biggest complaint is not one specific match but the overall inconsistant calls of stalling. Their was two matches right next to each other where one ref called several stallings and the other called one with less than a second left. Some times maybe the draw of your official is also important.

Ya all realize that these guys are practically volunteers.  Sure they get paid a little something, but for the most part these guys just love kids and the sport.  I get angry about a bad call just like the next guy, but come on.  Officials get harder and harder to find all the time.  Look at the average age of an official.  You see no young men doing it for very long because it is a thankless job and cheese wienies get on her and bash them for robbing poor Johnny out of his match.  Sorry, but lay off the officials or we will eventually have to recruit parents from the stands like they do in little league baseball games because nobody want to take the abuse from rude coaches or obnoxious parents or fans.  I am not an official but I gotta stick up for them.  If I were an official, I would be the one getting escorted out of the gym by the police because I would go postal on someone who got in my face over what they deemed a bad call.  Just saying.
