Competition Level At State

DreamTeam

Recommended Posts

This is very interesting.  I went through all of the brackets for the state tourney and found the kids with 2 losses or less in each weight class in an attempt to assess which weight class, on paper, was the toughest.  Obviously if you make it to state you have to be a pretty darn good wrestler; however some weight classes seem to be less competitive than others.  Which weight is the TOUGHEST weight at State? Take a look at what I found.

119,125, 171, and 189 seem to be tied with 7 people (the most people with the least losses) I also believe they have the most studs.

Great breakdown.  One would also have to take into account that certain individuals may have a few loses, but all of them are against the same top ranked person.  Obviously those individuals may be hard to figure out just at a bracket glance.  Their records may be decieving and that makes them very dangerous in some of the opening round matches.

You have to be careful when using win/loss record to determine strength of a weight class.  It is a good tool to use, but consider that some kids with more than 2 losses could have lost to a highly ranked and undefeated opponent more than 2 times, or even 2-3 of them depending on their strenght of schedule.  I think a good testament to this is at the Merrillville Semi-State.  Kids from the Logansport Regional come in with some pretty good records and go up against kids with 6-9 losses and get beat.  Now please don't take this as a knock on the Logansport Regionals, some of it is simply the logistics of being able to travel to different parts of the state for tournaments as well as having to fullfill conference obligations.

True, but I still believe 119 will be the toughest weight at state.... It is too deep.  Friday night will be, as always, very exciting.. a lot of great match ups and barn burners!

I agree about 119 but not 189, I think Atwood is head and shoulders above everyone.

I would be very hesitent to use the formula for competition to be who has two or less losses. My old school has (in my opinion) one of the top 3 189 pounders in the state and i would not say his weight class is the toughest. There is a kid with 16 losses and 20 losses in that bracket. Look at the Mcgill and Cosgrove battle, they both had 3+ losses heading to state that year because they had wrestled so many times. I would venture to say 125, and 171 could be the deepest weights.
