Remember When. . .

--There was a 98 lb weight class?

--Heavyweight (and it was called heavyweight) began at 186 lbs and had no ceiling?

--100% nylon singlets?  (you wrestlers now have it so lucky with lycra)

--The technical fall didn't exist, just decisions, major decisions, and pins?

--No overtime in dual meets when tied at regulation?  Each team got two points.

--The super dual for the most part didn't exist?  Bracketed tournaments were the norm.

--Teams wrestled primarily in weeknight dual matches?

--It was normal to have maybe twenty matches going into sectionals?

Feel free to add to the list.  This is more for the older section on the board, though.

Remember when Regionals was top 3 instead of top 4?

lmao everyone should cuz last year was the last year!

But also...

Only the top 2 at sectionals qualified for regionals

Regional champ went to state (no semi state)

There were only 8 Regionals, so no Friday night

This was back when my coach, Andre Scruggs, was wrestling. lol

Two more (basically because I'm bored at work and am waiting until I can scram for the holiday):

--With only 8 wrestlers per bracket, the Merrillville high school was more than adequate as a semistate venue and people weren't sitting on top of each other?

--Asics wrestling shoes used to be known as "Onitsuka Tigers?"

here are a couple more.

remember when

it was ok and not crazy to put on a plastic suit and run three miles around the high school swimming pool because it was 80 degrees in there

Most high school coaches didn't even know what the term body fat meant let alone how to measure it.

- wrestlers wrestled bare-chested and with long tights.

- there were only falls, dec, and ties  - - no major or superior dec.

- headgear wasn't required.

- there was riding time that could be earned in matches - you best know how to control your man

- 95 lb was the lowest weight and 175 lb was the weight before heavyweight

- referees wore white shirts and slacks.

- only 1st place would advance from sectionals and regionals - - you talk about not making any mistakes

- the State finals were held at Bloomington and then Southport.

- it was quite common for most of the football players to wrestle.

- schools would have full jv teams wrestle before the varsity in duals - - great times!!

- there wasn't 3 and 2 point nearfalls !

- two mats were used the the State Finals

Besides the old doctor type balance scales, some schools would use old or borrowed grain scales from the local feed store if they couldn't afford doctor type for duals and tournaments.  Several schools had the reputation for using a file or other means to enlarge the groove for the weight to slide on with those types of scales.  Others were just worn down (ha) . . . way back when.  If the ref would allow you to not center your feet on those scales a different reading would be obtained.

The starting lines were on the outside of the 10 ft circle.

Last summer at Mishawaka they busted out some mats with the red and green stripes on the 10 ft circle.  None of the kids believed me when I told them wrestling used to start there and it even started on the outside circle before that.

Remember when there was no twirly finger time out?  If you were on your back one only had two options:  gut it out and keep fighting, or if it really hurt lay down the shoulders, let the ref slap the mat, and the pain would go away.  Those were the only two ways off your back.

Remember at the end of period 2 and 3: up or down...no neutral and no defer?

Remember when Vans made wrestling shoes...really ugly wrestling shoes?  They were awesome.

Remember wrestling at 1:00 AM Sunday morning in the Ben Davis or Tech HS gyms?
