The Crimson Wave will be one of 24 teams at the Midwest Classic at the U of Indy this weekend.

There will be free streaming at http://www.livesportsvideo.com/golive/goliveevents.asp?q=UniversityOfIndianapolis according to U of I's web site.

Artie Gruba is natioinally ranked at #9 and Derek Allen has been tearing up the mats.

It seems that they have had a series of injuries and illnesses that have hurt the program this season though.  I have not found anywhere to find individual records.

Artie Grubba, Derek Allen, Tony Lovejoy, Anthony Hawkins, Eddie Castillo and John Tyler have already qualified for Nationals in March.

Wrestling Competes at Midwest Classic:

12/20/10 - Crimson Wave sophomore Derek Allen completed the Midwest Classic wrestling tournament, held at the University of Indianapolis, in fourth place at 149 with a record of 4-2.  The event took place over two days and featured top competition from 21 teams representing D-2, D-3, NAIA, and junior colleges.

"Derek's success on the mat is not a surprise or coincidence," said head coach Leroy Vega. "It comes from all the hard work and focus he brings every day."

Allen, who was unseeded, began the tournament losing a tough decision to Jake Strausbaugh of Wabash 7-2. He quickly bounced back in his next match defeating Nicolas Stella of King College 9-4. In his final match of the first day, Allen needed a victory to advance and guarantee top eight placement. He was able to pick up the win over Indianapolis' Steve Sandefer with a pin late in the contest after leading throughout.

At the start of competition on the second day Allen picked up where he left off and decisively beat Brian Legget of West Liberty 6-3. After his next opponent injury defaulted to him, Derek found himself up against Brendon Parker-Risk of North Carolina Pembroke to decide third and fourth place. Unfortunately he was defeated 5-1 by Parker-Risk to finish fourth.

Also wrestling for the Crimson Wave was sophomore Eddie Castillo 1-2, Anthony Hawkins 0-1, Ryan Peters 0-2, and Artie Grubba 0-2.

"This was a difficult tournament and a few of our guys took some lumps this weekend," added Vega. "We found out a lot about ourselves and we will learn from mistakes and go forward."

The team will next take to the mat on January 6th for a home meet against Hannibal-Lagrange.

It will be a busy next two weeks for CCSJ's wrestling team. First up they have a rescheduled home match against Hanibal-Lagrange on Jan. 6th at 7:00 pm. Then the next day on Jan. 7th they square off in two more home duals, first with UW Concordia at 6:00 pm and then Manchester College. The following week the men will be home once more this time against University of Indy at 7:00 pm on Jan. 11th. After that they will travel to the University of Minnesota for a dual with Concordia Moorehead on Jan. 14th at 5:00 pm. That match will precede the host Golden Gophers taking on Indiana University. Lastly the team is scheduled to appear in the Dan Gable Open hosted by UW Oshkosh  on Jan. 16th.

If anyone has any questions about these events or anything else about the team, feel free to ask on here or message me.

They aren't wrestling IU and MN. They are just preceding that Big 10 dual with a dual of their own in front of MN's crowd.

a little older news..

Avalos Joins the Crimson Wave

6/1/11 - Javier Avalos of Merrillville High School signed a national Letter of Intent to wrestle at Calumet College of St. Joseph.

In the 2010-2011 season Avalos wrestled at 145lbs for the Pirates and had a record of 33-9 while also qualifying for the semi-state tournament. "Javier has a good work ethic and comes from a great program, said Head Coach Ryan Rivera. "He showed that he could wrestle with the best last year and he is going to be a great addition to our team."

While attending CCSJ Javier will study Criminal Justice. "My season ended disappointing for me last year but I'm excited to be able to get a second chance here, said Avalos. I'm going to use that for motivation to be successful at the next level."

Wrestling Signs Pajdzik

5/31/11 - Christopher Pajdzik, from Gavit High School, recently signed a national letter of intent to continue his wrestling and academic career at Calumet College of St. Joseph in Whiting Indiana.

Pajdzik was a three time semi-state qualifier while competing for the Gladiators and compiled 114 career wins. His senior campaign was highlighted by capturing county, conference, sectional, and regional titles. He is projected to wrestle in the 141lb weight class for the Crimson Wave.

“Chris is a highly motivated wrestler and student that will be a great fit for CCSJ,’’ said Interim Head Coach Ryan Rivera. In choosing Calumet, proximity played a large factor in Pajdzik’s decision.  “I am excited that I get to continue wrestling so close to all my friends and family,” said Pajdzik. “It’s also a great opportunity to be a part of a newer program that’s continuing to grow.” While at Calumet College he plans to major in Exercise and Sport Science.

Wrestling Inks Ramiro Rojas

5/31/11 - The crimson wave wrestling team signed Ramiro Rojas, from G.H. Braddock High in Miami Florida, to a national letter of intent continue his athletic and academic careers with Calumet College of St. Joseph. Wrestling at 145 lbs, Rojas completed his senior campaign with a record of 49-3 and a 3rd place finish at the 3A FHSAA State Finals. He is projected to compete at 149/157 in the 2011-2012 season.

“Ramiro is a tough wrestler and can really be a hammer in the line-up for us next year,” said Interim Head Coach Ryan Rivera. “The best part about him is that he is a high character kid that knows what it takes to succeed not only on the mat but in the classroom. I’m excited to have him as a part of our program.”

Grubba Named Scholar-Athlete

3/7/11 – Crimson Wave senior wrestler Artie Grubba has been named a Daktronics NAIA Wrestling Scholar-Athlete.  This is the first Crimson Wave wrestler to earn this distinction.

In order to be nominated by an institution's head coach, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status to qualify for this honor.

CCSJ will be postponing their inaugural wrestling camp. It will be tentatively moved to July 26th-29th. The Crimson Wave will be announcing the hiring of a new Head Coach soon and pushing the date back will allow for him to be a part of this event as well as hopefully provide a boost in camp attendance. Crimson Wave Face Tough Competition

11/18/11 - The Crimson Wave wrestling team dropped its first three duals of the season today against some stiff competition at the Indiana Quad in Bloomington, IN. Sophomore John Tyler led the team by going 2-1 on day.

In CCSJ’s next dual the team matched up against NAIA 3rd ranked Lindsey Wilson and were blanked 49-0. The Crimson Wave fared much better in the last matchup of the night but were defeated 24-16 by Division II Central Missouri. Picking up victory's for the team were Anthony Hawkins (125), Tyran Claypool (149), John Tyler (157), Eric Johnson (184), and Coty Anderson (285).
