Possible Ohio State scandal with old wrestling coach

Once again you fail to see the point, you don't know how someone would react to that situation. Serial perpetrators such as what this guy is accused of pick their victims very precisely. They go after weak(mentally and physically) individuals and prey upon them. Wrestlers don't often fit that mold, but there are some that do.

The reason Disabato and company are going after Jordan is he's a lightning rod. Saying that the other assistants or even Hellickson knew and didn't report anything wouldn't create the media fervor that going after Jordan would. It would take a lot of real evidence for anything legal to happen to Jordan. The biggest damage will be perceived character issues

Disabato & the other wrestlers speaking out are claiming the doctor held their genitalia longer than they thought it should during a check for a hernia, and that the doctor had cold hands. They have not claimed anything beyond that - talking just about the wrestlers and what may have been communicated. Hard to take action back then on just that.

That is not exactly indicative of abuse, less so if you are not a specialist or knowledgeable to the procedure, etc. Creepy, sure, but not illegal in that context. The other aspect mentioned is the voyeurism on behalf of the people trying to use the shower or watch, which may or may not have included the doctor, which Hellickson has publicly said he addressed

Their quotes:

Anonymous Athlete  - ""I remember coming up and saying, 'Strauss held my balls longer than normal"

Disabato -  "The former wrestler recalled one of his encounters with Strauss, saying, "He examined my genitalia in detail. There was no masturbation or anything, but he definitely looked it over and checked it out."

Think of what happened to the staff of people involved at PSU and MSU.   Starting from the athletic director to all the coaches on the staff and to the campus security,   I think they would be worried about their career and reputation based on the results of this investigation.   Of course they're not going to say anything that incriminates themselves.  At least Hellickson had the courage to complain a little bit.

So you know all of the 7 guys that have made statements so well, that you can go online and attack their flawed  character and as being misfits that Jordan didn't like or get a long with being the reason they're now coming at Jordan.

Yes,  on the "Medal of Honor",  each school gets a female and male recipient each year based on athletic and academic success.     Former winners include John Wooden, Drew Brees, Bob Griese (Purdue has the big names), and aforementioned Mke Disabato.   This is one of the most prestigious awards in the Big 10.

Yes Ohio State is a fine school,   but you say getting a diploma there is like getting a diploma in a cracker box.   My son and his wife  graduated from the Ohio State University and a lot of his good friends did.  They would really be very offended by that comment.   My son got an accounting degree and a good job with PWC in Columbus.  He worked his butt off.  Keep in mind the average ACT for OSU is 29.  I would like to see how many people on this board ever got a 29 or higher on the ACT.

I wrestled at the college level in that era albeit at the NAIA level,  but I don't remember that era as the "Creepy trainers" era.  Maybe I was lucky and missed the creepy guys.  Was there really a problem?

So far, the public claims by all 5 is that the doctor may have held on longer during hernia check, and they felt he ogled them in the shower. They, so far, publicly indicate nothing beyond that. Creepy, yes, and easy to claim abuse 30 years later. All have claimed none of them told Jordan of any 'alleged abuse'.  The definition has changed in their eyes.

But if that is all they said happened in passing to the coaches, legally hard to allege they knew about 'abuse' - weirdos, yes. It's totally another level if any of the students had also said he acted beyond their current allegations, if you now what I mean.  All they have attested to is that they told Jordan kinew that the doctor was creepy. IMO, They are taking a serious situation with blurred lines, and exploiting it for personal gain.

Im not even coming at it as Jordan more so the school administration. If jordan was told and didnt report it that is a big issue. I would hope that if I told a coach, My superior about an inappropriate interaction with another staff member that made me feel uncomfortable that something would be reported. I think for me thats the true thing I want to know. yes its decades ago but things like that can traumatize people. My hope is that if anything people can start reporting these kind of things and come out when things are not done.

Its a side tangent but one big issue is the fact is that people with power and money can simply settle out of court and hit someone with a NDA where they cant legally discuss any of it with anyone allowing people with a big enough wallet to get away with almost anything. Dont think its relevent to this case but a problem none the less either way might be time to shut this guy down. It bums me out trying to find Fargo info and seeing this lol but I let Joe make that call. Enough of you dislike me as it is I dont think adding political beliefs will be a help to that :P

Agree - The conundrum is, report what?  "If Jordan was told and didn't report it that is a big issue". There is a wide river between players being creeped out & sarcastically making light of "the doctor with cold hands", to the MSU and PSU situation. The doctor may have, to be determined after investigation, have been found to cross that line. If so, hang him, go after those who knew.

But what get's me is that both instigators on the wrestling side have made this about Jordan and not the doctor; yet both these tools, Disabato & Yetts, have both claimed that NOTHING happened except the issues of what they believed was extra attention during a hernia exam, and even then, they said they sarcastically joked about it in the locker room as a running legend. And further, they ALL indicated that they individually never knew or never reported of anything of specific abuse to Jordan. But yet they still want to claim "he knew", because of locker room banter. The stuff that college kids say, stories they talk about, and did on the weekend gets pretty crazy - a coach who does not 'pal' around with the guys is not going to stick around and listen to that for good reason...

Mike Disabato even tried to extort Jeff Jordan by copying him on the crazy emails he was sending to Jim Jordan, even though Jeff never wrestled or coached at Ohio State.

Good to see that this whole thing is totally legit and not political at all.  I am sure they are greatly, greatly concerned about Jim Jordan being a horrible person.

As part of all of this still unfolds, I'm still curious about other assistant coaches? I know Hellickson has been mentioned and seemed to give his part in reports, but I haven't seen much on other assistant coaches. Was there only 2 coaches during this time period? I understand Jordan is a political figure and once you go there crap hits the fan, but I haven't seen anything being reported about other coaches at the time. What is their point of view, did they hear anything from wrestlers, and did they hear anything from wrestlers?

Edit::

Found some stuff from other coaches, but the media is certainly going after Jordan more so than other coaches.

“What has been said about Jim Jordan is absolutely wrong,” the six coaches said in the statement. “We all worked on the wrestling coaching staff during Jim’s tenure at The Ohio State University. None of us saw or heard of abuse of OSU wrestlers.”

Question for all the coaches on here... What would you do?

What is a wrestler came to you and said, "Hey coach, I think the doctor held my junk longer than he should have. It was creepy."

I would guess a high percentage would laugh it off or not look into it. Because, there isn't really any probable cause. But, if you have several wrestlers come forward saying the same thing. You could get a new doctor, turn that doc in, but the doctor has the validity to say, "hey idiots, I'm a doctor, I know what I'm doing".

Exactly, how many coaches are trained & familiar with many of these medical procedures.

As coach, you try and set a good example and teach the values you wish to uphold as men and as a program. The coach that is too chummy with his

wrestlers is guaranteed to screw himself later. Think back to the things wrestlers, or any college student might do on the weekend; as long as it is legal

and ethical, you stay out of trouble, went to class, did your school work, and progressed to graduation, that was the top priority.

Beyond that most assistant coaches are cognizant enough to NOT stay around and listen too, or swap war stories with your kids from the

previous weekend's festivities, and for good reasons.  #1, they should have their own life, #2, it does not set a good example, and #3 plausible deniability.

Hey Idiots Im a Doctor is not a valid defense against a sexual misconduct accusations. Google it, there is a PLETHORA of stories like this and there are avenues to deal with the situation. Can result in lost of licensure among the myriad of legal issues. The problem is these guys can settle civilly out of court and have the patient sign a non disclosure and then that person cant make a case so the guys who do get called out get away with it scotch free because they have money and they paid their victims off and made their victims testimony null and void....welcome to America where you can pay to be a crook.

There is a great This American Life episode about this same kind of problem. (Victims being silenced with money) and i dunno it makes me sick but maybe its just me. You can listen here:

Again, this is about Jordan. Let's get to what we all agree on. All the video and quotes from Disabato (future felon) and Yetts (former felon) had taught us:

#1 - "We were never molested, or had oral, etc....", but the the doctor was a "serial groper".

#2 - They both publicly NEVER told Jordan of any allegations of sexual abuse, etc. (because they were none), but now they indicate that Jordan

should have known from all the 'shop talk', or 'locker room banter'...yet they all said they did not report any abuse.

Now Disabato story is on the move yet again and he is claiming that "...he told Jim Jones, the athletic director from 1987 to 1994, when he presented his master's thesis on issues of substance and sexual abuse among athletes at the school." But never said he was molested.

We are finding out, DiSabato was frantically emailing Jordan AFTER he had gone to OSU to try and get a settlement when seeing the potential payout that was going on at Michigan State. So to put more pressure on, he also tried to rope in Jordan's brother who did not attend OSU.

Yes, it is highly possible something happened to other students. No it ain't these two scammers  http://www.dispatch.com/news/20180718/man-who-first-spoke-up-about-ohio-state-docs-sex-abuse-complicated-figure

Sorry, but my college assistants knew little about my day-to-day life other than my major, and how well I was finishing my low single, could I put more hip and head pressure on defense, what time I had to arrive for two-a-days and 1 private work out a week.  We didn't share the same locker room, the same shower, or go to the same bars, and he had no idea of  what girl I was dating that week. The assumption that they should have know seems noble, but not the case. Of course, why would Jeff Jordan send his kids to Ohio State if he was aware of such a cesspool as Disabato claims?

This is about wanting tarnish a great ambassador of the sport and man with integrity for $money$. By trying to smear Jordan, who is legally innocent. by their own words, they hope to make people think he is the one who did the abuse, and they are ok with that for the money.

My predictions, Yetts will be back in prison AGAIN one day, because that is who he is, and Disabato will be sticking a gun in his mouth, before or after he is bankrupt. It will be interesting to see the long term impact on the Ohio / Jordan relationship going forward....

I doubt a lot of people will agree with you on both of those fronts....  groping is a form of molestation and we do not have any proof that the abuse did not happen....

Ehh A suicide prediction seems a tad harsh. Your love for Jordan is more than fine but I won't fall either way until an investigation is concluded.

Will try and find the articles & video I saw, but Disabato was on video record saying to the point, "Dr. did medical exam for extend length of time, but there was no 'sexual activities' and (he homophobically stressed that); Also said many times he had never told Jordan of 'specific sexual abuse allegations'. Again, said he contends that Jordan should have known through locker room talk. Legally that won't fly and he know it. Now they are stretching extended exam duration as abuse;

Helickson did say he talked about the shower hogging & creepiness.

Ironically now it is revealed that the so called video Disabato made was   "The Video was produced in June by former OSU wrester Mike DiSabato's company Combat Athlete Coalition, he told CNN. The company represents the collective interests of former college athletes in matters of compensation and safety issues."  $$$ With Disabato's lawsuits against OSU, business issues, and now this, it is clear he wants money at all costs.

https://www.cnn.com/2018/07/05/us/ohio-state-sexual-abuse-allegations-video/index.html

As to shower stalking, not to hard to imagine that was the case, as in the 70's and 80's the facilities arms race and privacy are nothing like today. Except for Iowa and maybe Michigan, most Big Ten wrestling teams would have been lucky to have a room that was not crammed under some basketball arena seats or located/shared with a physical education co-rec facility, and were stuck in open multiple use locker rooms with the general student population, other olympic sport teams, and/or training staff, while football and basketball had their own secure locker rooms. So it would not be surprising to have members of the training staff using the same public showers.

I am not excusing it, just providing context to how easy it was facility wise.

Just a joke.  I can't stand listening to them whine about everything.  I am sure it was interesting, just having some fun at the expense of a podcast that a lot of people listen to but I can't stomach.  It would be great if more people were informed.  Do you have any other shows that might cover the topic?

Here is a Synopsis of the episode

The short synopsis is that LaDonna, the main character of this episode, used to work as an airport tarmac guard. She experienced racial and sexual discrimination, as well as harassment like being forced to work 10+ hours without a bathroom break. Once she was promoted, she witnessed the discrimination first-hand and tried to change the culture from the inside out as the trainer for new hires. Ultimately, she was fired for failing to comply with her supervisor duties... although they never told her she was fired or what the failure was. At one point in the episode, she talks about going to HR with a four-page complaint that referenced policies about discrimination and harassment. They basically told her, "If you can't handle the job, let us know and we'll make you a guard again."

Much of the episode was heartbreaking, and she learned along the way that there had been several previously-settled claims against the company. LaDonna has filed a lawsuit now and works for a different company at the same airport.

The highlighted part is where my point came in. When she was trying to find more people to join the case against her company she found about the settled claims and signed NDAs.

While I agree it is easy to make it look bad and the media seems to have chosen to run with that full steam, I would like to think Hellickson knows these 2 better than almost anyone and is encouraging them to quit lying.  For Yetts to say he dug up stuff on him to attack his character is laugh out loud funny.  Its not like everyone didn't know he was in prison and Jordan hired a team to find it.

I can't believe this story has legs in the first place.  It has been so over the top with the focus on Jordan that it blows my mind.  Even if he weren't fully honest about knowing, in today's environment of politics and the stuff politicians have done and gotten away with this seems like the smallest of small in comparison.  I am not saying what he did is right or even wrong, I don't know what he knows.  All I am saying the effort to blame him for more than saying he didn't know is mind blowing.

You're right when you say Helickson knew these guys,  but these guys knew Helickson too.     Helickson's problem is he let the Jeanie out of the bottle and you cant put it back when DiSabato got Helickson to admit on video about Strauss's sexual assault.   Everybody on here loves ripping Disabato, the guy is smart, and he smart to get that interview from Helickson to admit it before it the fan.    Helickson didn't forsee this coming back to haunt his buddy Jordan.  He was being honest at that point, but he also didn't think about his own personal ramification of him ignoring the situation    Know he's trying to make up for his mistake by trying to coerce the wresters to back off and recant, but the Jeanie's out.   Kind of naïve to think texts like this wouldn't get out to the public.  Helickson might have put himself in some legal trouble for obstructing an investigation.  At least Helickson still had enough loyalty to not turn his back and throw his former wrestlers under the bus just to protect his career like Jordan.   Again,  Jordan's strategy to attack the whistle blowers kind of is weak when 6 more wrestlers have stepped up and said he knew this.
