Recommended Posts

Below is the progress of teams accepting Team State bids for 2018-19. Once these lists are finalized, teams eligible for the two vote-in wildcards per class will receive paperwork to tell the voters more about incoming and JV talent and other positives about their team for next year. Voting will take place in April over the Coaches' Clinic weekend.

Teams in bold have accepted. (Chesterton declined and are no longer listed.) Others here have not announced their decisions:

3A 2A 1A

Indianapolis Cathedral Leo
Eastern (Greentown)
Mater Dei North Montgomery Eastside

So in 3A, 2 Region teams, 2 <Pound Sign>HendricksCountySmellsFunny teams, 3 Marion County teams, 2 southern Indiana teams, and Nortridge.

The Ft.Wayne semi-state is very well represented in 2A!  In total, I think 3 teams from southern Indiana and the rest north.

I was a tad surprised there is only 1 southern team in 1A...I think.

If you look at the teams by class by semi-state these numbers shouldn't be too surprising.

  3A 2A 1A
New Castle 25 24 32
Fort Wayne 19 29 29
East Chicago 26 22 25
Evansville 31 29 20

Ha ha. Somebody edited my post.  I wonder who that could have been.

Are the same people that make fun of Ft. Wayne for being the weakest semi-state also the ones that think class wrestling is a stupid idea?

So three of the 30 teams are from the Jay County Regional but it is considered weak???? Isn't a 3 in the formula used?

Be ready for the response that it is top heavy therefore it is not really a hard regional to advance from...

Fort Wayne has really been dominant in the smaller classes. Wawasee is the first team not from the FW Semi-state to win either class 1A or 2A.

And I think Jay County was close to representing from 3A, and I think they may have a better team than Northridge next year. Southern Wells hopefully gets in with a vote in for 1A, they bring back four semi state kids and I think most of their starters from this past year. South Adams was also in team state this past year and Delta who is also a solid team. Definitely a tough regional. Still not sure how half a regional being solid makes it top heavy

I would think most regionals are top heavy. I believe the Jay Regional is compared to Carroll by some and the disparity of I think the Carroll Regional a 5 in the formula and Jay a 3 is unfair. I think they are more even then people think.

Carroll was a 4

Thanks....I think the Jay should be as well. I don't keep the stats but it would be interesting to see state qualifies by regional over the last 5 to 10 years.

I think you are probably correct. I think the formula is flawed...makes no sense a senior can score 8 points at Semi-State and an Under Class-man 9. If you are going to use Seniors the margin needs to be greater than one.

From another thread:

I answer this question each year. It's an important question, so I'm always happy to engage with at least a quick response.

The Regional Categories are determined based on the "crowdedness" of each. We're trying to determine how difficult it is to qualify for semi-state--not how good the top end is. In the same way we can't say Yorktown should be ranked higher in duals than Garrett because they got more state qualifiers (Garrett beat Yorktown at team state), we can't say one regional is more crowded than another based on 9 or 17 of the 250 wrestlers that feed into that regional.

In competition terms, a better way to determine how difficult it is to get through a regional would be to have 5 dual meets between the 4th through 8th best kids from each regional. The winner of most of those matches would give a much better answer than simply whose high-end state qualifier totals are more when the majority of those come from two schools ever year in Jay County's case.

Statewide, since we've gone to the Category system the last 4 years, we've been incredibly accurate in getting almost all of the best teams from the following season into the event. In 3A, we always have 9 or 10 of the next year's year-end Top 10. In 2A, we get 8 to 10 and in 1A it's been 8 or 9. And even in 1A and 2A, where lineup turnover is so large, we've only missed a Top 5 team being at the event once every two years on average--and those teams were in the final vote, so the qualification scoring thought highly of them.

All this to say: the scoring is working very well as a whole. It's not designed to pick IHSAA champions or to predict which regional has the most high-end talent. It's designed to find the best dual-meet teams for next year and nothing more.

In math terms, below is how we arrived at the Category levels for the Jay County and Peru regionals:

Points for advancing to these levels in 3A, which you seem to be referring to:

Semi-state first round: Underclassmen 14, Seniors 6 (+8)

Semi-state second round: Underclassmen 20, Seniors 11 (+9)

State: Underclassmen 23-25, Seniors 14 (+9-11)

Seniors get some value because they're very predictive of a program's quality--but you can see those values are much less than an underclassman. What we're saying, essentially, in 3A, is that a team that produces a senior state qualifier (14 points) will on average replace him with an underclassmen semi-state first rounder (also 14 points).

How is the Genius Rating calculated?

From another thread:

Here are Genius Ratings for the full season of 2017-18 in Indiana. Remember that they use the same baseline mathematical system that is used by mainstream sports websites' "computer ratings" and by Las Vegas in determining point spreads. These ratings consider every dual and tournament in the IndianaMat database for the whole year, with the exception of some specific early-season results for teams that played football late. The difference in rating between two teams represents roughly the expected point spread if those two teams wrestled a dual. Multiply that same point spread by 3 to estimate the favored team's expected gap in a tournament. Y2 will post these as sortable by class soon. If you've paid attention to these ratings before, you may notice that the top 5 teams this season have very high ratings. All schools 3-5 are the highest-rated teams in those slots that we've seen in the 9 years of doing this. Also, Brownsburg's score is only .02 off of the highest score we've seen.

I know that this is a solid formula, and there has to be a way to calculate this, but I still don't see how a team like Marion has a higher genius rating than Bellmont. Peru has three teams with negative ratings, yet they somehow get a 4. And their top teams have a very high score, but I don't see why they are that high compared to a Bellmont or AC

Weird that Yorktown the Delta Sectional Champion is almost 25 points higher than the Jay Sectional Champion - Jay County.  When head to head its probably close to a 43-36 score  with Yorktown winning. That's looking at head to head results and awarding a pin to a weight class the other team did not have a regional qualifier, and in most cases that weight class went on to semi state as well.

Do this:

1. Take a given team you think is overrated or underrated in these ratings and add up their plus/minus from every single dual meet for the year. Then, add in their plus/minus for every single opponent faced in tournaments for the year (but only take 40% of that tournament final total because we only value individual tournament results that much).

2. Go to the ratings and add up the plus/minus between the ratings for every single team they faced for the season in the same way you did for the real scores in instruction #1.

The results of these two calculations will be identical in every case for every team in the state. They are all perfectly slotted according to their real-life results for the whole season--not according to one or two cherry-picked results or theoretical results.

If you want to argue that a particular team was missing some guys for 3 weeks or that certain teams' ratings are padded by weaker schedules or other things--there are certainly some cases like that, I'm sure. But the ratings reflect one thing and one thing only: full-season results for everyone with zero guesses or biases included in any way.
