Minnesota HS Championship - "Tournament Time"

Recommended Posts

This is prompted by the topic "What state does it best".  I happened to look at Minnesota and it's an interesting setup for both teams and individuals. Curious to see what others think.  Here's my best description

"Tournament Time" for both teams + individuals takes place at end of season.  Their team tournament is an "all-in" format

Minnesota is divided into 3 classes (A, AA, AAA) and each class is divided into 8 geographical "sections".  Each section has 8-12 teams.  So, with 8 sections * 3 classes, the state is divided into 24 total sections around the state.

WEEK 1

  • Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday - TEAM FIRST ROUND. The bracket of 8 to 12 teams is seeded. On one of these nights, each section has the first 2 rounds of their team dual tournament at a local HS. By the end of this first round each section has 4 teams remaining
  • Friday/Saturday - TEAM SECOND ROUND / SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP.  Some sections do it Friday, some Saturday but each section gets a team champion

WEEK 2

  • Friday/Saturday - INDIVIDUAL SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP.  One day seeded tournament - the top 2 wrestlers from each section advance to the state championships.  Looks like each section has the tournament at a local HS

WEEK 3

  • Thursday - TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS.  The 8 remaining teams from each of the 3 classes are seeded into a 8-team bracket. Includes consolation to 3rd and 5th places

  • Friday - INDIVIDUAL FIRST ROUND + QUARTERFINALS.  16-man brackets are seeded.  Starts at 9am they do class A, 11am for class AA, 1pm for class AAA.  Quarterfinals and wrestlebacks run on Friday evening

  • Saturday - INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS.  Morning session are 8 mats, consolation quarterfinals + semifinals and at 10am they have championship semifinals.  Evening session starts on 6 mats for all classes wrestling for 3rd/5th (guess they only have 6 placers).  6:30pm Three mats - Championships by weight for all classes

Joe - They have a 2nd place wrestleback at the section individual tourneys

However, it looks like if you lose the championship and have already beaten the consolation winner, then by rule you get 2nd place automatically.  If you haven't wrestled then there is a match for true 2nd
