3A Team State Qualifying Scores (through regional)

Scores will finally become relevant this week at semi-state in 3A. Underclassmen can score up to 9 and seniors can score 8 this week. Even the highest ranked teams at the moment in this class still need a good chunk of points to ensure their spot at Team State. Probably around 185 or 190 will be needed to get an automatic bid. 

Remember that the top team in each semi-state plus the next best 6 scores qualify automatically for Team State.

Could someone explain why we do automatic qualifers (top at each semi state). Seems like this only benefits a weaker team that can’t get enough points in a weaker semistate. History has shown that some automatic qualifiers have not performed well. Also.. I think that some teams from other semi states that are the top team at their semi state would do much better than the auto qualifier, if those teams were in a different area of the state. Just my opinion... but I believe that the top 8 should qualify (regardless of location) and vote in the rest. Maybe say that the top team from each semi state be considered for the vote in (if not in the top 8). Are we not trying to ensure the top teams get in?

Northridge could put a serious road block in the Carroll team state qualifier streak.

from years ago at the meeting when the concept of team state started in this fashion and then evolved into the larger fomat this was the thought:

make sure there are teams from each semi-state.  Under the "old format" when IHSAA ran the team state duals a  team from every semi-state would qualify

in most sports (basketball, football, baseball, etc..) as you work toward state you have one team from each semi-state making the finals four and then the two moving on.  If the number one and number 2 teams would beat each other out at sectionals only one would move on.

so much of the automatic qualifier is to get representation from the entire state - but allowing the point system here to hopefully bring back in some of the top teams - which is why the format has grown to encompass more teams

I think it kind of works that way now.    Not that I'm aware that there's a weak semi-state,   but the top team at the weak semi-state would be 10th and the other 9  top scoring teams automatically get in.       Add in the fact that 3 or 4 of the teams like last year will drop out (at least in 3A), then the top 12 scoring teams will have a shot.  Generally top 15 scoring will have a shot.   Which in a relevant point,  I hope Merrillville, Cathedral and Crown Point got their thank you note from Harrison for  dropping out and getting them a slot. They had an enjoyable time at "Team State" this year.   Perry Meridian also should have been sending the thank you note also.

This wasn’t directed at one team, but the system. Carroll maybe a top twelve team. With this said, they are not a top 8 team. If any team is not top 8... let them be considered in the vote in like the other vote in caliber teams.

I think Carroll went into the 10 spot last year.  The top 9 scoring teams get priority consideration.
