Article: 2017 Mr. Gorilla Award

15 posts in this topic

Wrestling 45 matches in a season without a defeat is an impressive feat. What about also adding in 38 pins including 27 in the first period? Let’s also add in only three matches going into the third period, with only ONE, yes one, match that went the full six minutes. When you add all that up you get this year’s Mr. Gorilla, Andrew Davison of Chesterton.

Davison put together one of the most dominating seasons the state has ever seen this year. The future Michigan Wolverine already had a laundry list of accomplishments highlighted by national titles in folkstyle and Greco-roman before capturing his first state title this year. Davison’s career record was 121-4 with 79 career falls. On top of his accolades on the mat Davison has also been academic all-state based on stellar work in the classroom.

The right winner for sure. Whoever voted for Alston Bane (no offense) should lose their future Mr. Gorilla voting rights though.

Right?  Not only did Laughlin win the title at 160, but he had a better career than Bane to boot.

Why the hate on Alston Bane? Three time placer, including two thirds, and a class act bringing awareness to mental health illnesses and breast cancer through his clothes and hair colors. More than deserving of consideration for Mr. Gorilla

I think you're mistaking us questioning the 2 first place votes with hate.  No doubt Bane is a fine young man, but there are many other fine young men that also had more successful wrestling careers.  Besides, you'd have to have been living in a cave for the last 15 years to not be aware of breast cancer at this point, haha.

Since when did any contrary opinion become perceived as "hate"?

Take note that the hate was not on Alston Bane, it was on whoever voted for Alston Bane.... Unless Alston Bane voted for himself... twice.

So wow, he got two votes and we post some silly about this.  Speaking of voting, Im going to vote this post as the most trivial post of the year.

Agreed...Bane has been ultra highly respected for his on and off-mat character in east central Indiana for a couple of years. Not surprising that a couple guys elevated the "character" criterion below to the forefront in Bane's case. (These are the criteria Joe has posted on this site):

Here is the criteria we are looking at; these are left intentionally vague for voters to determine who THEY think best fits this award.

Some general criteria that can be considered is listed here:

1. Must be a senior

2. Undefeated/fewest losses. A mid-season loss would not disqualify a wrestler.

3. Domination. Number of pins, tech falls

4. Level of competition.

5. Body of work previous to senior year. State and national resume.

6. Character

7. Grades

Any, or all of these may, or may not, be taken into consideration by the voter when making selections.
