Castle Regional Recap

hook and half

Recommended Posts

In a year without a lot of drama expected in the finals…expectations were way off!  Let’s go to the results…

106- MD’s Clay Egli romped through the field.  Castle’s Devon Casebolt is quality; a decent draw could pave his pathway to State.

113- The big match anticipation of Kyler McKinney and Seth Horty in the semifinal fell short of emotion as Horty dominated with a fall.   Horty closed the gap in the final, but Castle’s Baxter Annakin got to pose with his parents and new bracket board.

120- Same story and same teams as 106.  MD’s Kyle Luigs looks ready for State, as the junior claimed his second regional title. Castle’s Neal Bealmer is very scrappy and is a SQ threat.

126- Gibson Southern’s Logan Dilbeck was head and shoulders above the pack.  In the semis, he got a very quick takedown against Castle’s Carson Willis and controlled the match for a 5-0 win.  For the top slot, he immediately took Reitz’s Caleb Craig to his back and held him for a first period fall.

132- Hurricane Nick hit the beaches of Paradise at 9am.  By three pm, the merciless Lee had left no survivors.

138- The final between Castle’s Austin Ramsey and MD’s Blake Jourdan met the hype.  Jourdan scored first, maintained his margin and won all of the little battles—until the third period.  Ramsey scored a takedown with back points, Jourdan got loose and Ramsey added another “two” to close the deal.  What a match!

145- Mt Vernon’s Austin Bethel outlasted North’s Nick Burke, 4-2, in a tremendous semifinal match-up.  His final with MD’s Joe Lee was devoid of any drama, with Lee winning 15-4.

152- An all-Catholic duo found the center mat at 152, where MD’s Mitch Lehman earned his first regional title with a 7-5 win over Memorial’s Chance Williams.

160- Castle’s Jacob Farmer was expected to have some tough matches, but he made it look easy, ending his day with a pin over Pike Central’s Colton O’Neal in the final.

170- O’Neal’s training partner, Jaylon Owens, had one of the topsemifinal matches of the day.  Facing Castle’s Evan Dowell, Owens had a back-and-forth match, with Owens scoring a takedown in OT to win 10-8.  Owens maintained his momentum with a 5-3 championship bout win over Central’s Kiave Guerrier.  He is only a sophomore; keep your eye on Guerrier.

182- It was an all-Warrick County match-up for the gold when Castle’s Carson Mohler faced off with Tecumseh’s Jeremy McKinley.  On the wrong side of a one-point decision for the sectional title, McKinley flipped the script and recorded a 3-2 win for the regional title.  Two athletic guys went at it for six hard minutes.  Boy, do the Tecumseh fans appreciate their wrestlers!

195- MD’s Kurtis Wilderman was untouched.

220- MD’s sophomore, Michael Boots, avenged his sectional semifinal loss to Mt. Vernon’s Tristin Choate, beating him 3-2 in another thrilling semifinal.  Princeton’s Payton Halbig successfully slowed the tempo in the final, but Boots managed to score an overtime takedown for the top podium spot.

285- One had the feeling that whoever brought the gasoline to the Wade Ripple/Cory Klem donnybrook would emerge victorious.  Klem got busy scoring an early takedown, added three more and never looked back in an 8-3 affair.

No overtime pay for Kyle Luigs and Nick Lee—they won all of their matches by fall.

The Castle Regional’s all-Rodney Dangerfield Team- The rankings mavens may not respect these guys, but I do!

  • Nick Burke
  • Colton O’Neal
  • Kiave Guerrier
  • Jaylon Owens
  • Jeremy McKinley
  • Michael Boots

Random Issues-

  • The Elpers girl from North Posey sang the National Anthem—that was some set of pipes!
  • A concession stand sign read: “Loaded Baked Potatoes…As Big as Your Head”.  The marketing pros at Castle got the memo.
  • Castle’s announcer did his usual bang-up job, as did the school as the hosts.
  • Wood Memorial brought a solid crowd that made a ton of noise for their favorite sons.

Egli and Nick Lee's first round matches........................Egli on his back for a short time got the MD faithful's blood pumping early!   Was I the only one who noticed Nick flat on his back while tilting his opponent?   I know it was only for a very short period of time and all the elite guys do this move but...................this always makes me nervous in elimination rounds when a "slap happy" ref could make a quick pin call.
