The only thing that would change this would be if there are any new programs.

(Although in my opinion, if a new program starts up, it would have to be a 1A school anyways, and would probably just make sense to add an extra team to 1A.)

The only schools above 1A that do not have wrestling programs to my knowledge are Silver Creek and Herron.

I didn't think that the IHSAA recognized class wrestling.  Shouldn't this say "Coaches Association" classes or something similar?

The IHSAA does not have a classed state tournament. This website ranks teams in three classes because the IHSWCA has chosen to host a tournament with three classes.

  • 2 weeks later...

Based on the new information from the IHSAA:

New Palestine and Jasper are now 2A

Muncie Central is now 3A

Oak Hill is still in 1A (as they should have been last year) and Centerville drops to 1A.

Lapel, Oldenburg Academy, Faith Christian, Christian Academy and Lighthouse Academy all dropped programs.

New Palestine is now classified as a 2A team?  Will they be matched up in the same bracket as Yorktown for the IHSWCA duals?  With Alec White, Chad Red, Diep, Timberman, Starks, Grable, etc.  New Pal looks like a pretty loaded team and they may be a tough matchup in the 2A division

As of right now for the 2016 version of team state they would be a 2A team. That is based off of the teams listed as entering sectional on the IHSAA website.

If the IHSWCA takes the suggestion of only counting teams with 5 or more wrestlers, then it would look even more plausible to see them at 2A next year.

Nothing on this thread is official in any way.  It is solid, educated guesses at where teams will end up being classified in qualifying for NEXT year.  Until the IHSAA's sectional participation lists are final and until the IHSWCA finalizes any tweaks it wants for qualifying for next year's event, no classification list will be final.

if we're 1A and should have been last year, when do we get an invite? I think we could battle well in 1 or 2.

Unfortunately for Oak Hill, they will have to qualify for NEXT years Team State based on this season's results of their individuals in the State Tournament, so if they are as good as they say they are, they should have some underclassmen advance far into the State Tournament and that should hopefully be enough to score enough points to be invited to wrestle at Team State next season.

Oak Hill is always near the cut-off enrollment, but seems to get bumped by random schools entering in a couple wrestlers at sectional. It is probably time to only count teams with 5 or more wrestlers entered at sectional. In all honestly if a team has five wrestlers and all five are state champions they would be in the running for a spot at team state. Any team with less is just fodder to weaken the classes.

I'd say including all teams in the data is still a fair system, even if those with less than 5 wrestlers will likely not have a chance of making the final cut. All teams at least deserve a chance to see how they are competing overall and within their respective Class group.

However, for the sake of dividing up the Classes "best" it could be helpful to remove the teams with that few wrestlers (not sure best number but less than 5 sounds reasonable) when splitting up the three classes equally. Once The class splits are created then the removed teams (those with low numbers) can be placed back in the system as additional 1A teams. Or in a few cases those low wrestling number may need to be placed as additions to the 2A group if their school size would dictate that rationalization. Sure that would make the pool of teams in 1AM slightly larger than the other classes, but as mentioned earlier the teams with low numbers are less likely to be a factor in the final results anyway.

One side effect of this solution though could be that by causing the cut numbers to shifting up, it does allow a few more "larger size" schools to move into the next lower Class. Some 1A school especially may look at the addition of these "larger size" schools into their Class as not really creating a true 1A group to compete within. But someone would have to look at the adjusted splits more closely to see just how much of a shift this idea may cause and how big of a school size jump we are talking about between the new schools which would move down and those already in the Class.

To even have points tallied at sectional you need at least 3 wrestlers entered.

There is no reason teams with less than 5 wrestlers should be counted. It is fruitless and just makes 1A even weaker. It won't hurt adding 5-10 teams into 1A that field 5+ wrestlers.

There is no solid reason to include teams that have a ZERO chance of qualifying even if all their kids were returning state champions.

Agreed.  Even a team with 6 state champs that technically qualifies for the Team State Duals and all six wrestlers pin every opponent in every dual still has no chance at beating a team with a full roster.  They would be taking up a spot for another team and completely defeating the purpose of the Team State Duals.
