Notes from IU vs Nebraska

133 - Caton v McCrystal (fr)

Caton controlling ties and moving better. Still not creating much action but get's a nice counter foot sweep for the TD. Then gives up the escape and a quick TD to end the 1st. Mccrystal takes down and escapes. Caton again staying straight on in the ties and get's snapped and taken down. Caton escapes and get's another TD then gives up a reversal. 8-4 to start 3rd Caton goes down. Caton stands up and get's lifted to his back and stuck. Looked better here than he did in the NW dual. More aggressive. More push/pull action in neutral. Still not creating many scoring opportunities.

141 - Raley v Joseph (sr) (not reg starter)

Raley aggressive with underhook then get's in on a nice reshot but can't finish. Raley get's a workmanlike TD then gives up the quick escape to end the 1st 2-1. Joseph takes down and get's away with quick changeover. Joseph in again on a single and Raley successfully defends with a heavy front quarter for the third time and get's the go-behind. Again a quick escape. Raley leads 4-3 after 2nd and chooses down. Raley rolls to a short sit and get's a reversal. Escape makes it 6-4. Raley stalls the rest of the match and wins.

Huskers lead 6-3

149 - Roach v Sueflohn (jr)

Roach is the best handfighter on this team. Pulling and looping well but gives up the TD. Quick escape. 2-1. Another TD for Sueflohn nice escape for Roach to end the period. Sueflohn chooses down and get's out immediately. Roach handfighting well but repeatedly getting beat to the punch by Sueflohn giving up another TD. Sueflohn riding hard now. Roach needs to work on finishing shots. 7-3 after 2nd Roach chooses down. Tough ride, Roach called for stalling on bottom. 8-3 Sueflohn.

Huskers lead 9-3

157 - Walsh v Green (jr) (2x AA)

Walsh looking unorthodox and Green looking explosive. Good action to start. Nice power double for the TD and Walsh gives up a full set of backs trying to scramble and elevate him through. 5-0 after 1. Same position from Walsh collar tie and controlling elbow trying to slow down Green. 5-0 after 2. Green takes down. Walsh forces a leg and get's a quick stalemate. Nice mat return and again forces a leg. Walsh get's high and gives up reversal then escapes. 7-1. Walsh is dangerous, but I'm not sure if it's because he's funky, unorthodox and likes to take risks, or if he just doesn't care.

Huskers lead 12-3

165 LeBlanc v Wilson (so)

Leblanc straight on pressure, stuck in front head, good defense. Nice inside trip to single from a 2on1 for the TD. Leblanc tough ride leads 2-0 looked like ref missed some backs there on the crab ride. Leblanc takes down and working hard to get away. Wilson tough ride but just hanging on a claw. Good work on bottom from Leblanc and he get's away 3-0 but Wilson has RT. Wilson takes down. Leblanc tough on top here. Two weird homer stalemates and a stall call that Wilson never got by doing the same thing. Leblanc with a good 3-2 win over an NCAA qualifier. This is a nice measuring stick for Ryan at this point. Good mat work in this match and better intensity. Still has soft hands in neutral.

Huskers lead 12-6

174 Jackson v Kokesh (rsjr) (2x AA)

Jackson NICE low single off the whistle but cannot finish. Another nice shot by Jackson for the TD. Quick escape. Jackson moves well and is very slick and get's to his low shot for the third time. Kokesh in on a reshot and Jackson just get's overpowered. 3-2 Kokesh and he chooses down and get's a quick reversal. 5-2. Escape by Jackson. IU looking way better on bottom in this dual. 5-3 after 2. Jackson chooses neutral. Jackson showing nice scrambling ability too. I really like this kid but he struggles against bigger guys. Kokesh is not the most powerful 174 and he is giving him all he can handle. Kokesh wins 6-3 with RT but Jackson is truly a bright spot for IU.

Huskers 15-6

184 Sheridan v Dudley (rsfr)

Sheridan comes out pretty intense and scrappy but straight on and looks "reachy."  Sheridan in on a shot and out the back but get's stalemated. Straight on pressure and get's a last second double to end the 1st. 2-0 Sheridan chooses down. Dudley with the 2on1 tilt for 3 backs, rolls him through then locks up the cradle and sticks him. Sheridan wrestled better here as well. Better intensity, better shots but not good enough. Dudley is a stud prospect but this match tells you a lot about where Sheridan stands in the BIG10.

Huskers 21-6

197 Goldman v Johnson (jr) (backup behind Kolb)

Goldman wrestling square. Push/pull looking to dig underhooks. Goldman creates zero angles or scoring opportunities in the 1st. Johnson starting to get at him with fakes and motion. Johnson takes down, escapes and get's quick TD. Should have been a reversal actually. Johnson riding tough working the near wrist on the bad shoulder. Goldman getting pounded on bottom and Johnson rides him out leads 3-0 with RT. Goldman wisely takes neutral. Goldman picking it up and gives up a go behind. 6-1 Johnson with RT. Goldman shows nothing and get's beat handily by Nebraska's back up. Not good enough.

Huskers 24-6

285 Chalfant v Jensen (rsfr)

Adam looks huge. Working underhooks and using heavy hands. Good scramble to a go behind. Chalfant with the tough ride and leads 2-0 after 1st. Chalfant takes down, tripods and get's the escape. Jensen get's to the leg but Chalfant just overpowers him with the underhook. Adam get's double unders and Jensen bails giving up the TD. 5-0 after 2 with RT. Jensen goes down. Jensen up and Chalfant circles to the double, lifts and returns him. Jensen escapes. Adam straight forward, get's to the leg, finishes and cuts him.  Another TD and Chalfant get's the major. Great effort from a heavyweight. Heavy hands and enough risk taking to put up points. I like the way Chalfant is wrestling at this point. ANother bright spot for IU.

Huskers 24 Hoosiers 10

.

Ongoing themes: Soft hands, No angles, Not creating action/scoring opportunities in neutral, No tough riding, no 125?

Bright spots: Raley seems hungry. Roach is getting to his shots. Better intensity overall. Jackson flashing more and more talent. Chalfant wrestling great.
