Riv0376
11/16/13 - The Crimson Wave Wrestling team travelled to the University Wisconsin Oshkosh this weekend to compete in the Dan Gable Endowment Open. The men were led by Freshman Dennie Brown of Crawfordsville, IN who came away as the tournament champion at 184lbs. Brown began the tournament with 7-1 decision over Alan Dahlke of UW Oshkosh and followed that with another win, this time 7-2 over Chance Shea of Harper College. In his next bout he faced off with Lakeland College’s Aaron Almedina and earned a finals appearance after defeating Almedina 9-6. Brown then secured the championship with a tough 5-3 decision over Nic Veling from University of Wisconsin. In that match Brown got an early lead with a takedown in the first period, but Veling rallied back to tie the match 3-3 late. The deciding points came in the final seconds when Brown countered his opponents attack to get a takedown on the edge of the mat. “Dennie went out today and did a great a job of getting the first takedown and controlling the pace of his matches,” said Head coach Ryan Rivera. “When someone can do that they will always be in a good position to win.” Rivera was also happy with the team’s overall performance though he recognized the team still needs work. “The biggest takeaway is that I was very pleased with everyone’s effort, but we all have room to grow going forward.” Also placing in the event for CCSJ was Freshman Scott Pitrowski (3-1) in third place at 285lbs, Sophomore Ramiro Rojas (4-2) in fourth place at 157lbs, Junior Gabe Mota (3-2) in fifth place, and Junior Eric Johnson (3-2) in fifth place at 197lbs. Next week the team travels to Campbellsville University in KY, on Nov 23rd to compete in three dual matches.
