NCAA Super Regional 3 Results

 

ST. CLOUD, Minn.- A trio of Greyhound wrestlers will be making the trip the NCAA Division II National Championships, after placing at the DII Super Regional 3 Sunday.

 

Josh Kieffer, Bryce Givens and Steven Sandefer are the 2012 UIndy National Qualifiers, while Jeff Weiss also placed at the meet.

 

Kieffer took second in the 125 weight class, and went 2-1 on the day. The Greyhound rookie bested Anthony Bruno of Northern State 6-2 in his first match of the day, and then won 2-1 over St. Cloud State's Eric Forde to earn a berth in the championship match.

 

Kieffer fell 2-0 to Corey Ullmer of Minnesota State-Moorhead in the final to take runner-up status. In addition to his nationals trip, Kieffer was also named the regional's Freshman of the Year.

 

Sandefer earned his trip to the national meet via a third-place finish in the 149-pound weight class. Sandefer went 3-1 on the day with a pin and a major decision.

 

In his first match of the meet, Sandefer took an 8-2 decision over Jesse Westphal of Minnesota-Mankato. He then fell 8-1 at the hands of Augustana's Nate Herda, before redeeming himself with a 21-second pin over Upper Iowa's Jordan Rinken to earn a spot in the third-place match.

 

Sandefer took a 12-3 major decision over Keenan Hagerty of Maryville to punch his nationals ticket and take third place at the regional.

 

Givens will be making his second trip to the national meet, having also qualified two years ago. Givens went 3-1 on the day, taking fourth in the 157 bracket.

 

The UIndy redshirt junior won via a pin in 2:32 over Newman's James Carter in his first match, and took an 8-6 decision in overtime over Marcus Edgington of Augustana in his second bout. Givens then loss to Winston Robbins of Upper Iowa in an 11-9 overtime thriller.

 

Continuing his extra-minutes theme on the day, Givens took a 2-1 double-overtime win over Collin Engelhardt of Mary to take a spot in the third-place bout, where he fell 3-2 to Jacob Bennett from Minnesota State-Moorhead.

 

In addition to the three national qualifiers, Weiss also placed at the regional, taking fifth in the 165 weight class with a record of 3-2 on the day.

 

The trio of grapplers will head to the NCAA Division II National Championships Mar. 9-10  at Massari Arena in Pueblo, Colo.
