The Crimson Wave will be one of 24 teams at the Midwest Classic at the U of Indy this weekend.

There will be free streaming at http://www.livesportsvideo.com/golive/goliveevents.asp?q=UniversityOfIndianapolis according to U of I's web site.

Artie Gruba is natioinally ranked at #9 and Derek Allen has been tearing up the mats.

It seems that they have had a series of injuries and illnesses that have hurt the program this season though.  I have not found anywhere to find individual records.

Artie Grubba, Derek Allen, Tony Lovejoy, Anthony Hawkins, Eddie Castillo and John Tyler have already qualified for Nationals in March.

Wrestling Competes at Midwest Classic:

12/20/10 - Crimson Wave sophomore Derek Allen completed the Midwest Classic wrestling tournament, held at the University of Indianapolis, in fourth place at 149 with a record of 4-2.  The event took place over two days and featured top competition from 21 teams representing D-2, D-3, NAIA, and junior colleges.

"Derek's success on the mat is not a surprise or coincidence," said head coach Leroy Vega. "It comes from all the hard work and focus he brings every day."

Allen, who was unseeded, began the tournament losing a tough decision to Jake Strausbaugh of Wabash 7-2. He quickly bounced back in his next match defeating Nicolas Stella of King College 9-4. In his final match of the first day, Allen needed a victory to advance and guarantee top eight placement. He was able to pick up the win over Indianapolis' Steve Sandefer with a pin late in the contest after leading throughout.

At the start of competition on the second day Allen picked up where he left off and decisively beat Brian Legget of West Liberty 6-3. After his next opponent injury defaulted to him, Derek found himself up against Brendon Parker-Risk of North Carolina Pembroke to decide third and fourth place. Unfortunately he was defeated 5-1 by Parker-Risk to finish fourth.

Also wrestling for the Crimson Wave was sophomore Eddie Castillo 1-2, Anthony Hawkins 0-1, Ryan Peters 0-2, and Artie Grubba 0-2.

"This was a difficult tournament and a few of our guys took some lumps this weekend," added Vega. "We found out a lot about ourselves and we will learn from mistakes and go forward."

The team will next take to the mat on January 6th for a home meet against Hannibal-Lagrange.
