JD,

Thanks for the history, I have a few questions on a few of the items.

Could you give us more details on the following

2001

1 - Dual Meet Tournament become a classed tournament following IHSAA guidelines

*How many classes and how was the structure?

2 - Condense the 4 week individual tournament to a 3 week tournament

*How would you condense the current tournament?

1999

2 - Dual Meet Tournament become a classed tournament following IHSAA guidelines

*Again how many classes and the structure of it

1997

2 - Dual Meet Tournament become a classed tournament following IHSAA guidelines

*Same as above

I am curious how the previous class proposals were formatted so that we can see what the IHSAA likes and/or dislikes.  Knowing this will help out in the future.  Also where the votes all 0-15 or were some of the board members in favor of these proposals.

First - Thanks JD for all the time you have put in to trying to improve wrestling in Indiana. Alot of people don't realize how much you have done for Indiana wrestling and how badly you will be missed as an IHSWCA officer.

Second- The bottom line is the IHSAA didn't vote in favor of class for wrestling because they were not ready to class all the other individual sports. If the IHSAA wants to class all individual sports then it will class wrestling, but not until then. If one goes class they will all go class. They were not infavor of classing individual sports at the time of our proposals - team sports only. They like to say wrestling is an individual sport, not team, when it benefits their stand against class for wrestling

Like I stated in another thread - track is going to propose class this year (2 classes). I have also heard that the IHSAA may be more willing to listen to class for individual sports. I didn't say they would do it, just they may be a little more willing to listen. They also really like our Individual State Tournament and don't want to change it. They think it has been very successful and don't want to do something that they think might hurt it.

It doesn't matter which individual sport proposes class it will not happen until the IHSAA wants individual sports classed.

I'm guessing these two were proposed in the idea that that would compliment each other.  If we ever were to go to a 3 class individual tournament I would say we would only need 3 weeks to complete the individual event since it would involve less teams.  This could then help open up an additional week to complete the team state portion of the event.

If we go to a two class system we can cut it down to three weeks.

Two class setup for each class

16- 8-12 team sectionals with top 4 advancing

4- 16 person regionals

1- 12-16 person state

I believe track is proposing both individual and team for 2 classes.

If the majority of the IHSWCA wants to propose class for individual or team they would have to show the IHSAA that a majority of the association was in favor of it. They told us they looked for 95-100% as a majority. This is why we did the survey at the sectional seeding meeting to get all coaches and schools polled. We did this because they told us that the IHSWCA didn't represent all the coaches because not all were members and Bobby would make comments that "There were only 100 coaches at the clinic when the proposal was decided on. The problem is even when we used our polls from the sectional seeding meeting and had over 90% of members in favor - it didn't matter we still lost at the Executive Board vote.

We hurt ourselves by not being members and not attending the fall and spring clinic. We hurt ourselves fighting on this board and they do look at this board. Bobby over the years has made comments about things said on here or the old web site.

Their favorite thing to say is "You wrestling coaches don't know what you want."

The IHSAA will want to see a plan for class wrestling 2-3 classes. They told us they like 2 classes to start and then increase as needed.

The IHSAA will want to see that there are enough schools (Principals and ADs) willing to host these events.

The IHSAA will want to see that there are enough officials to cover these events. That was always something Bobby said "We almost don't have enough officials to cover the tournament now."

The IHSAA will want to know the cost to them - travel expenses, facility expenses, official expenses and support staff expense. What is the debt/profit margin?

You will need to find some Principals and ADs that will speak up and support class wrestling at the IHSAA Board meeting.

I have been told they are happy with the individual tournament and don't want to change it except go back to the old way of scoring it and drop the team dual tournament.

The only way I see wrestling going class is if the IHSAA wants to do it - not that the wrestling coaches want it.

When I last talked to Cox by phone he did seem more receptive when talking class. He brought up that we were unique and therefore may have something to talk about. We did not get any further because I did not feel like I am the voice of the Ihswca so I left it there. He did say he would like to talk more.

Very good questions and very good answers - explanations. Without a doubt the IHSAA will do what they feel is best for their association. There are IHSAA guidelines in place for classing any sport. It was used for all the TEAM sports that are classed. Based solely on enrollment and number of teams that participate. Convincing the IHSAA Executive Board that wrestling is a little bit different animal will have to come from PRINCIPALS!
