  1. By JEREMY HINES thehines7@gmail.com There’s cool, and then there’s Jack Eiteljorge cool. The Carmel senior wrestler may even be too cool. “Jack’s the guy I want to do my heart surgery because he’s as cool as a cucumber,” Greyhound coach Ed Pendoski said. “He doesn’t get rattled by anything. But, that’s one of the things we are trying to work on this year. I want him having emotion. We’ve talked to him about how sometimes you have to have emotion, whether it be positive or negative.” Just how cool is Eiteljorge? “He’s so cool that you could sit him down and tell him that someone just walked into his house and killed his dog, Bacon. His reply would be, ‘Oh, OK.’,” Pendoski said. “You could tell him that Taylor Swift is in the hot tub and wants to make out with him, and he’d say ‘Oh, OK’.” Eiteljorge is currently ranked No. 2 in the state at 160 pounds. He is a three times sectional and regional champion, but he has never punched his ticket to state. Pendoski thinks opening up and getting a little emotional may be the edge that Eiteljorge needs to finally get to state - and possibly win. “Going into this year, after the Super 32, we had just had two pretty bad losses,” Pendoski said. “We really started dialing in on our mental part. He’s done a good job reacting to that. The phrase we use a lot is that mental toughness is the ability to manage the thoughts in your head. We went back to that simple platform. We talked to him about getting excited. We said let’s get angry. Let’s be happy. Show something.” The plan has worked. Eiteljorge is 33-2. He has pinned or tech falled all of his opponents in the state tournament except for one, and that match he won 18-8. “I’ve been trying to show emotion,” Eiteljorge said. “Coach wants me to, and he has a lot of muscle so I listen to him. He feels that sometimes I’m like a robot on the mat. He wants me to just start having fun. I’ve really been working on that part. It’s a big change from past years. Making myself be less methodical is the key. I have to go out there and make the matches fun.” Eiteljorge isn’t one of the kids that found immediate success in the sport of wrestling. When he was young and just started going to CIA, Pendoski’s wrestling academy, he was the guy getting beat up on. “Jack was in a group with some very, very good wrestlers,” Pendoski said. “He was the beginner. The partners he was with had been around for years and were winning championships. I think Jack went two or three months before he even scored a point. But, he was the guy that would stick around after practice and do pull-ups or pushups.” Eventually he won his first club level state tournament. Pendoski says that was a turning point for him. “That’s the day I knew this little ankle-biter would be OK one day,” Pendoski said. “It was nice to see a guy that started from the beginning, worked his tail off and then started to see the results.” Eiteljorge lost in the first round of semistate his freshman year. As a sophomore and a junior he lost in the ticket round. “This year my goal is to win state,” Eiteljorge said. “My goal is not just to get to state. But, I still know there will be a pressure on me to get past the ticket round. If I win that match, I’ll certainly feel a weight has been lifted.” Eiteljorge isn’t one to talk about personal successes, he’s too cool to brag. But, he’s more than willing to gush about his teammates. “I have really good teammates,” he said. “They are awesome. I love hanging out with them. Carmel’s team chemistry is what helps us be a top program. We are always improving. We have a casual, playful environment. We have fun. But when it’s time to get serious we focus and get the job done.” Next season Eiteljorge will wrestle for the University of Indianapolis. “The University of Indianapolis is going to be real happy with the product they are getting with Jack,” Pendoski said.

  3. Google Doc Sign Up Form CARMEL USA WRESTLING CLUB CAMP FEATURING PURDUE UNIVERSITY WRESTLING COACHING STAFF: HEAD COACH ERSLAND, TODD, TANELLI OCTOBER 3RD and OCTOBER 4th 2015…. BOILER UP HAMMER DOWN!!! Come spend the weekend with us at Carmel High School and get the chance to meet and learn from the new Purdue University Wrestling Staff. Head Coach Tony Ersland, Assistant Coach Tyrell Todd (Big 10 Champ, 3x NCAA AA), and Assistant Coach Zach Tanelli (NCAA AA, Midlands Champ) will all be in attendance to showcase the techniques that they show at the Big 10 level, and the essential skills that they believe are necessary to succeed at the highest levels of wrestling. Come be seen by the Purdue Wrestling staff, it’s going to be a great camp! Under the direction of first-year head coach Tony Ersland and assistant coaches Zach Tanelli and Tyrel Todd, the Purdue wrestling program turned a new corner in 2014-15. Numerous program firsts were established and records were touched, putting the Boilermakers on the national radar for seasons to come. Eight Purdue wrestlers, including all five senior starters, received an automatic berth to the 2015 NCAA Championships, held March 19-21 in St. Louis, Missouri. It had been a dozen years since the Boilermakers qualified eight to the NCAA Championships and it was only the third time in program history eight advanced. The Boilermakers knocked off three nationally ranked teams: No. 18 Northern Iowa (21-15), No. 20 Chattanooga (19-16) and No. 19 Northwestern (22-17). Last year we had Purdue come in and they put on a heck of a camp. We had 50 campers from all around the state getting better and looking to be seen by our own in-state Division 1 BIG 10 school, the Purdue Boilermakers! This is a great opportunity if you are looking to get some training in for preparation of any preseason national tournaments or if you are just gearing up for November when High School Season officially begins. 8. Carmel USA Wrestling Club is rolling on Sundays and Thursdays from 6:45pm-8:15pm every week. It is neat to watch the club room grow in numbers and in quality of workout partners. This is a tribute to how hard our staff works and how hard the kids in the blue room work. We have currently about 15 IHSAA Semi State Qualifiers in the room and a handful of those kids are IHSAA State Placers, including 1 IHSAA State Champion. We encourage you to come check us out if you are looking for a place to train on Sundays and/or Thursdays. We charge $50 a month and you must have an ISWA Card. We also want to share a neat opportunity for athletes in Grades 4-8 that is coming up. We, the Carmel High School and Middle School Coaching Staffs are excited to announce this year’s Spring Session Middle School Workouts. This is the second year of doing the weight training workouts, and the results have been phenomenal. It has been great to be able to work with athletes from a variety of different sports. These workouts will take place in the Carmel High School weight room and on the wrestling mat, and will be run by the knowledgeable members of our staffs. Carmel USA Wrestling staff are all certified to teach the athletes how to properly lift weights, and will be on site for these workouts. St. Vincent’s Strength Coach Aaron Bosket helped put this workout regimen together. Coach Bosket is the Carmel High School Strength Coach and oversees all athletic programs in the school, and runs Advanced Physical Conditioning classes during the school day. You must have an ISWA Card to attend. If you are looking to wrestle it is very convenient, since we have wrestling practice right after weight training on Thursdays. The main focus of this Weight Training is to help kids become more athletic in all phases and teach them how to properly lift weights. 10. http://currentincarmel.com/carmel-high-school-coach-recognized Congratulations to our Head Coach Ed Pendoski on this great honor. Good Read... By Mark Ambrogi Ed Pendoski once was as wrapped up with wins and losses as much as the next coach. “When I was 22, I was really big on training your guy to go beat the other guy that’s really good,” said the Carmel High School wrestling coach. “I’d be lying now if I said that still didn’t feel pretty good.” However what Pendoski has learned is teaching life skills is a far more important part of his mission. “You see a kid that gets out of college and is a successful person in life and learns how to deal with garbage that everybody has in life,” Pendoski said. “At the end of the day, that’s what we do. We give kids some skills to take them to the real world. So when real adversity hits, they’re in a little better place to attack the problem.” Pendoski would rather talk about his program and his wrestlers than his own accomplishments. So he isn’t too comfortable focusing on his induction into the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame on Feb. 22 in Greenwood. A master motivator, Pendoski, a former Purdue wrestler, had a 327-27 record and guided eight state champions in 11 seasons (1994-2005) as Portage High School coach. One of those Portage’s state champions, two-time Fred Joseph, will be entering the Hall of Fame with Pendoski. He retired from teaching and left Portage to start the Central Indiana Academy of Wrestling in 2005. In 2012, he sold the CIA and became the Carmel High School coach and president of Carmel USA Wrestling Club. Pendoski said the wrestling club has sought to model itself after the highly successful Carmel Swim Club. “What a great thing to try to copy a program that is 50 yards from us (at the school),” Pendoski said. Pendoski said the first thing he tried to do was develop the culture around Carmel wrestling. “People in the school let alone the community weren’t talking about wrestling,” Pendoski said. “We had to get out there in front of people to make it something people wanted to see.” In the 2013-14 season, the Greyhounds captured sectional (first since 2009) and regional (first since 2007) titles. “Coach P made us act more like how we should be expected to act,” senior wrestler Morgan Pruitt said. “He brought us together as a team and made us more of a family. We all do things together now. He has a way of motivating us. He’s able to apply a lot of things in the past to a lot of our present situations and deal with them accordingly.” Pruitt said Pendoski has expressions that they call P-isms, such “do or do not, there is no try.” “I wouldn’t have come to where I am without Coach P,” Pruitt said. One of Pendoski’s main philosophies is learn to love to train. “That’s the key to anything whether it’s wrestling or being a parent or street cleaner,” Pendoski said. “We don’t spent a lot of time about talking wins and losses. If you train just to win, what do you have. If you love to train, it’s sustainable and it goes a long period of time.”
  11. I just wanted to say thank you to all of our coaches, parents, volunteers and wrestlers for a job well done with all of the great wrestling at Carmel High School this weekend! On Saturday we had wrestling mats from wall to wall with multiple tournaments running at the same time with great wrestling taking place at every level. We had the Varsity Triple Dual, freshman invite and and the future of Carmel High School wrestling at the Carmel Middle School city meet with Clay, Creekside, Carmel Middle and St. Maria Goretti getting down with a great middle school triple dual. Then on Sunday, everybody was right back at it that worked and wrestled saturday working their butts off for the CUSAWC Dan Nelson Folkstyle Open to much success! 300 plus youth wrestlers got started at 10am and finished up by 3pm in time for everyone to get home to watch the Colts beat the Broncos. 25 of our kids wrestled in this event plus one wrestler placed 4th at the tough Philo Electric Invitational. The future of Carmel wrestling is looking bright now that our youth program is getting bigger and better every week. I can’t believe how far the program has come in such a few short years with Coach P and McClurg and the rest of the staff getting it done and getting this sport heading in the right direction in Carmel. Those guys are definitely building an army! If you are looking for a place to train with quality workout partners and kick a$# coaching, this is the place. It won’t be long till we are competing with the big dogs as a state title contender year in and year out. I couldn’t be more proud to be part of this, keep up the great work coaches, wrestlers, parents and volunteers!
