  1. In the mirror? Positive Self Talk.
  2. Anyone remember the "Good ol days" when the biggest issue was people saving seats.
  3. Just to play devils advocate, I have seen the coaches of the 3rd and 4th best kids in the bracket use criteria to bump the 2nd best kid up to the top. Is this legal? Yes Does it align with the intent of seeding and taking advantage of criteria?
  4. Problem is next weekend is JV Team State, which falls on the same day as JV Individual State. So you have many of the top JV teams getting 4-5 duals. CP, BB, CG, Columbus East, Franklin, Mater Dei, Warren Central and others. Unfortunate timing IMO. Maybe next year we can get the dates adjusted.
  5. Columbus East having a week our young squad battling: Columbus East over #11 Carmel 39-29 Columbus East over #16 Greenfield Central 40-23 Columbus East over #18 Franklin 40-19 Columbus East loss to #4 Perry Meridian 32-33 Some great duals against some well coached teams.
  6. This is the year I took 3rd lol Two great guys that I have reminisced with at different events. We had a few good battles back in the day.
  7. Columbus East winning 3A State vs a very good Roncalli team, coming down to the final match. This coming after not being able to attend the prior year with a really good chance win a title. Good for the athletes and their families to share that moment.
  8. Its easier to get on a plane than it is inside Ford Center...smh
  9. Yes it comes into play. Seed Number 4 - 3,5 and 6 all have justification head to head. So you go to common opponents and 3 has wins over 2 and 6. 5 lost to 2 and 6. So Seed goes to #3 now. Seed Number 5- 5 has latest head to head win over 6 so #5 gets it. Seed Number 6- 6 Gets it So the seeding now is 1, 2, 4, 3, 5, 6 Realistically it doesnt make a difference because 3 and 5 are the #4 and #5 seeds no matter which way it goes.
  10. Ill give it a shot. Its been awhile since I was in a seeding meeting. 1,2,4,5,3 seed 1- #1 Seed 2- Wrestlers 2-5 all have justification so move to next criteria. Without knowing common opponents we will assume it cant be figured out that way, move to next criteria. No one was a semistate quarterfinalist, move to next criteria. By record #2 gets it. (assuming these records are without forfeits included). Seed 3- Now everyone gets thrown back into the ring and criteria starts over. Head to head 4 beat 5 and 5 beat 3 so #4 gets it. Seed 4. Start over again. 5 beat 3 so #5 gets it. Seed 5. #3 This is how I would interpret it.
  11. Warren Central Brownsburg Mater Dei Columbus East Center Grove Fort Wayne Carroll Perry Meridian Southport Cathedral Franklin Community Definitely a preview of some upcoming studs and good competition.
  12. Want to thank Jake O'Neill and Warren Central for putting on a great tourney. We feel blessed to have this type of event to give our guys an opportunity to wrestle great competition and continue to get better. Was ran perfectly, refs were top notch and we were out with 4 duels in very good time. Columbus East really appreciates the opportunity and Jake it was nice getting reacquainted, its been a lot of years since we were competing and yes we do have a few more grey hairs. Also, Congrats to Brownsburg on taking home the title! Great day of wrestling.
  13. McCubbins was insane at Freestyle and Greco. He was a few years older than me and I remember it was a show when he was on the mat.
  14. I knew there were some technical issues, so wasn't sure if there was a problem on my end.
  15. What time should the rankings be open to the public?
  16. South vs Walker was pretty hyped up and very close.
  17. From your lips...Win or Lose these kids deserve a chance. They didn't get it last year but this group deserves at least a chance to wrestle in this event.
  18. Columbus East White finishes 3rd in the Silver Bracket while giving up 2 and sometimes 3 ff all weekend. Great job for those young men!
  19. David Maldonado and James Leavell met twice under the lights, both winning one. That was a pretty good rivalry.
  20. Unfortunately you will never get people on the same page on this debate. The biggest reason is not enough people have experienced the realities of small towns and small schools. Without giving my opinion on if Id like to see a classed state I will give you some of my personal truths of coaching at a large school vs a small school (which I have done both) Lets start with obvious ones we call can agree with: 1. Less partners in the room make it harder to get better 2. Less quality partners in the room make it hard to get really good 3. More kids in the school directly equates to more athletes, which equates to more athletes from the pool to draw from. 4. Many School facilities are better in larger schools 5. Many of the top notch coaches and families arent moving to a school of 300 kids. 6. High Quality Off Season wrestling clubs are more than an hour away. 7. If you travel to another school to workout with them, there is a chance your kid will transfer to the better school. 8. With so few kids in a small school, making Varsity 4 years in 3 sports is a real opportunity. How many 3a and 4a school have those types of kids an opportunities? 9. Community support is usually bonded to just a few sports in small schools...most of the time wrestling aint one of them. 10. Families dont stick around small towns on a regular enough basis to start a tradition in large quantities. 11. High quality assistance, middle school and elementary coaching is impossible to find because of limited number of people. Which weakens a program from bottom up. 12. It seems at smaller schools, coaches are less likely to accommodate other sports and are constantly competing for time causing athletes to make choices between sports. These are facts, are their outliers, sure. Are there teams breaking the mold, sure. Are there athletes rising above the norm, sure. But as a whole, this is the reality for most small schools. Do large schools have their own hurdles and struggles absolutely, but I see these debates so many times and very few have lived both sides. I would like to hear from a coach who went from a successful large school to an less successful small school and made the small school program better than their previous school. Any examples like that out there? If not, why? If so, lets hear what they did different to make a small school better.
  21. yup, thats him. Man you are taking me on a stroll down memory lane! I def recall Eric, cant recall any of our matches...I do remember 1 match I had with Kerkof though, Free Style State in 94 I believe, there were 64 kids in a stacked weight class. Getting toward the end of the day, Kerkof beat Leavell and was assured he was going to win the weight class. He was none to happy when I beat him 3-2. Very strong kid and was rarely in a bad position, hard to score on. Lots of good memories.
