There are more of them. 🙄 lol. They all have a lot in common - incredibly humble, talented, and sportsmanlike.  Like you hate losing to them but always find yourself rooting for them against anyone else. It’s a really awkward feeling that I still can’t wrap my brain around.  Seriously, really weird.  Win or lose they always show class and they are also always ridiculously good at wrestling. So much respect for that family….and we are their “rival”.  I can’t root against them when they aren’t wrestling Brownsburg.  Again, very strange.  I’m going to go see a psychologist.

Coach Trapp was/is legit. I wrestled on an Outlaw team with the Rooks bros, Nick South, and a couple other Columbus East kids and he treated us like we’ve wrestled for him our whole life.

Coach Trap (unsure on spelling) was always around Columbus East program and Outlaws teams. Great guy and could coach all the kids like they were his own. Unsure if he is still helping out, but his time and effort were always appreciated.

I'll always mention Jim Ledbetter on Black recognition threads. Wise, caring, thoughtful father-like figure to so many wrestlers, young coaches, and young officials. One of the best coaches and one of the best officials I've ever been around.

    UPDATED AGAIN!

This old coach's memory must be going away!  How could I forget some of those Schoettle/Bissmeyer/Getz battles in CYO?

Each season we are happy to honor IHSAA State Qualifiers who competed in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) Little Guys (grades K-4) and/or CYO Cadet (grades 5-8) wrestling programs.  While their talent shows through on the mat, we also acknowledge that these wrestlers are great role models for our younger wrestlers in the various clubs and CYO programs.  May God Bless the following CYO alums with safety and success:

Peyton Schoettle – 106 Roncalli (Our Lady of the Greenwood)
John Bissmeyer – 106 Cathedral (St. Simon)
Blake Getz – 113 Roncalli (St. Jude)
Nathan Reyes – 113 Cathedral (St. Simon)
Gavin Bragg – 126 Cathedral (St. Simon)
Jack Davis – 132 Bishop Chatard (St. Michael)
Eddie Goss – 132 Center Grove (St. Barnabas)
William Vander Luitgaren – 138 Center Grove (St. Mark / Ss. Francis and Clare)
Parker Reynolds – 144 Brownsburg (St. Michael/St. Malachy)
Braden Getz – 150 Roncalli (St. Jude)
James Dozier – 165 Roncalli (St. Barnabas)
Kyle Harden – 175 Cathedral (St. Louis deMontfort)
Kaden McConnell – 195 Center Grove (St. Mark / Ss. Francis and Clare)

    GOOD LUCK!

Thank you to everyone who has reached out regarding Preston.  Results of a CT scan and other tests have come back.  Nothing is broken and he will make a full recovery.

As far as what happened, the Mater Dei wrestler had been winning the entire match.  An illegal slam was called.  It was not intentional.  Whether it was an illegal slam or not, I don’t really care.  We were never taking a dive.  Brownsburg doesn’t roll like that.  It goes against everything we believe in.  If I thought it was intentional, It would be a different story.  There is no doubt in our mind that it was just a result of two dudes trying to punch their ticket to state.

It was pretty chaotic as all of this was happening as I’m sure you can all imagine.  Given that it was a neck/head injury, I wanted to give medical people access to Preston.  Once they had time to check Preston out, I took that opportunity to talk to Preston.  There was never any talk or consideration of taking a dive. Preston would never do that.  He was in a lot of pain and upset.  He has had a lot of adversity this season. He tore his ACL at IHPO and has been working through that pain and frustration all season.  I just explained to Preston what had happened and that I was going to forfeit the match.  I told him we were losing…and it would not be fair to take the trip to state away from the Mater Dei kid.  Preston agreed and said he would never do that.  There was no reversal of the call or anything.  I just went up to officials and said we are forfeiting the match.

Whoever said Preston was walking around saw someone else.  He was taken out on a stretcher and to the emergency room.

A team win isn’t impressive when you haven’t developed any wrestlers and instead cherry pick, aka recruit, them from other schools.

You have to sell the parents just as much as the kids on the sport(really any sport). If the parents don't buy in, it will be hard to get them to practices and meets.

The way our youth tournaments are ran make it a very difficult sell for many parents. Most other sports it is an hour to hour and a half commitment for an event. However, for wrestling we pride ourselves in a 12 hour long tournament(note a little sarcasm, but not much).

In order to evolve we need to have our events be PARENT friendly as much as it is child friendly.

We are well aware that we have work to do and TBH we need to get on the bandwagon and start recruiting and getting all the good kids to the same school to start creating powerhouses. But as of right now we aren’t doing that. No matter if you think this statement is true or not there is much more that goes into it all and personally I find it rude. But hey it’s the internet say what you want. Don’t worry though we always know who makes what statements.

Also it is “too bad” and not “two bad”.

I used to attend this event until I found out it’s the worst money grab ever.  Officiating sucks and some redneck from Maine or South Carolina comes and tries to explain to me why they just lost 84-0 and how their kid bumped up and that’s the only reason he didn’t AA.  Ocean is overrated: the only redeeming part is the weather and fish tacos. Yet it’s May and the weather is good everywhere. But keep going at time we should be be focusing on the international styles for Kids Nationals and Fargo

The MD teams from the 2000's were pretty well home raised, you could connect the dots to see the grade school and Parish these guys went to. If MD was handing out "scholarships" I must have missed that line because we paid full price to go. I had a buddy who had to work all summer (not just a month or so, ALLL SUMMER) to help his parents pay for tuition, to go to MD. That same buddy placed 2nd his senior year, I'd venture to say he'd be a prime candidate to recieve "scholarship money" but never got a dime. You can take that horse poo somewhere else.

My thought Cruz is physically ready where the others are not quit there. I can't say anything about Solomon and Torres - they did not wrestle the same level of compitition as CP. I think Cruz could make 174 in college. The others could benefit with a redshirt year. I really like Goodwin - Angel you need to be talking to that boy.

I have seen so many times where wrestlers by the time they are seniors in high school peak out. Physically and mentally the grind gets to you. The season never really ends - don't get me wrong technically they are far superior.

My analogy is kids throwing a curveball to young. You only have so many throws in the arm. I believe you only have so many matches in the body.

    1. Is there a better explanation for why parents have their kids do two 8th grade years for wrestling than improving their chances of getting a scholarship?

Purdue tuition is cheaper than IU if you can get in, but tuition is maybe only 40% of total costs there. My daughter’s rent senior year to live near campus was over $900 a month, and you have to pay for all 12 months on a year lease. They are keeping only tuition costs frozen in part by admitting now 18.6% full paying international students, which would be fine, except 41.5% of the School of Engineering, a national security issue in my book, is now international. CP had a kid with a 4.2 get rejected for engineering recently, so he had to pay out of state tuition at Michigan. You might need above 4.0 to get into their nursing school now without really good SATs. One of my daughter’s sorority sisters said she got into nursing with a 3.9 and 1,260 SAT, but that was 5 years ago.

    2. $100,000 taxes paid probably indicates sufficient income to support a UNC education, but that’s far above the median Indiana family gross income which is $96,083 for a family of 4.  https://www.justice.gov/ust/eo/bapcpa/20220401/bci_data/median_income_table.htm

Agreed. I asked a few years ago why a McDonald’s sweet tea in Hamilton County cost $1.09 instead of $1.07 elsewhere and was told every county surrounding Indianapolis has a 2% additional sales tax to fund the Colt’s new stadium. I haven’t checked the veracity of that, but I’ll often eat before I pass through that area just to protest that tax. I can’t write on here what I observed with college basketball and football.

    3.  True. We worked all summers in the corn and bean fields from age 13 on. Times have changed. Minimum wage pay won’t be enough and things are more competitive now.

We were passing through a Plymouth area McDonald’s drive through a few years ago. The girl must have seen my Navy shirt and commented she was going to the Air Force Academy and was taking 6 AP courses. When my kids complained about their school work load, I would sometimes reference her in jest.

Drake Buchanan had an almost 4.6 and he still wasn’t in the top 10 of his class. LaRocca has a 4.7. If those two earned $5-10k a year at minimum wage with all the time studying and wrestling they put in, I’d have to debate whether I was more impressed or worried.

I made sacrifices and paid my son an allowance to study instead of work for minimum wage. If kids work, good luck getting them to save a high %. He got into Purdue via philosophy, but he had to bust his tail freshman year to get all As to transfer to neurobiology once he changed his mind. It took two semesters of all As to transfer from the Liberal Arts College to the College of Arts and Sciences bc he was denied after the first semester. We also heard about an older girl with a very good GPA who got rejected for physics then later got in via physics education. I doubt we’d have been successful going straight in via engineering.
