  1. What are some ideas that could be implemented at wrestling matches (dual or tournament) that would show good faith towards avoiding any infection? I think it would be great for the IHSWCA to brainstorm ideas and publish some tips for coaches statewide - Screening of temperature @ weigh ins - Hand sanitizer pump stations in gymnasium for audience members - Liberal use of sanitizing chemicals to clean mats - A note sent home, or discussion from coach at beginning of year to parents outlining how wrestling practice room will be cleaned, and what other precautions are being taken to keep their student healthy - Statistics kept showing detailed record of how many IHSAA wrestlers (no names, just numbers) have been confirmed with Covid in-season. My hope is that this would be a positive measure to show the lack of numbers. If it is other case, then I think the numbers are still useful although disappointing - Tape on bleachers to mark off space between seated groups, or to block off entire rows so audience isn't right on top of each other
  2. Let's say society is somehow able to get back to "normal" sometime this summer. How much will the perceived threat of close contact in wrestling affect our numbers in the fall? Coaches - are you formulating a plan to screen or otherwise setup steps to avoid someone bringing it into the practice room? If it hasn't already happened, I think it would be a good idea for coaches to brainstorm some standard suggestions/guidelines for best practices in this area
  3. I wonder what happens to the tens of thousands of airline and hotel reservations, and tickets that fans paid hundreds for?!
  4. Honestly I was a bit surprised that Parris got the #1 seed over Steveson, however I am happy that he did as I feel Iike he earned it with the pin over Cassiopi and the fact that Steveson sat during the Michigan-Minnesota dual. They are separated, however Cassiopi is a dangerous opponent and I’m happy that Parris will not have to go through him again prior to facing Steveson (assuming the seeds hold) 133 should be a fun weight there are some hammers there. Also, is Christian Brunner going to be able to go for the Boilers? I thought he was out for the year but I saw he was seeded
  5. Galagore - you made a point that some JV wrestlers may be able to be a state qualifier (beating a small-school state qualifier specifically, although they could also beat out a large-school qualifier) So is the small-school state really equitable? Does it reward the best wrestlers? Or is it designed to award a group of wrestlers based on a subjective line you have drawn (based on lower half of enrollment) and said "this isn't fair". Is it equitable for a state-level wrestler to not even be able to compete at the sectional level because he is behind two studs from a large school? He's likely toiled day in and day out - and doesn't even get his shot. If we truly want to make things more equitable, then expand state to 16 or 32 competitors, which will theoretically bring in more of the best wrestlers from all school sizes and allow them to earn the right to gain exposure and awards. Then, focus efforts on additional training opportunities for those smaller schools to bring their talent level up to the level needed to have the privilege of earning their way to compete at state.
  6. So then you add in small-school state, and get 14 more winners next year and a bunch more placers. Now you want to convince your wrestlers to do more offseason wrestling. But wait - offseason is not classed!! So forget it, right? You can't compete against those guys it's not equitable.
  7. Do the small school class-wrestling fanbase even tell their kids to participate in ISWA tournaments, or just sit them out since the deck is stacked against them? It really paints a glum scenario to think that you'll never be able to compete with the other guys because of your environment
  8. Joe - this is a good explanation. As you have experience with a small school, here is one of my objections. It is clear that you also believe that one of the ingredients to increased skills is an emphasis on off-season wrestling. And here is where the small school has an inherent disadvantage (although I would call it an advantage). Many students are in multiple sports. So by encouraging them to concentrate on in-season wrestling, then off-season wrestling too, you will be in conflict with other sports at your small school. I believe that the students/parents should enjoy the environment where their student can participate and have success in multiple sports (where many times they cannot at a larger school). Leave the off-season work and one-sport specialization to those students/parents who desire to pursue a college athletic career or high-placing in the IHSAA state tourney.
  9. Not much discussion of a plan to improve the skill level of these wrestlers from small schools, only adding more awards to the IHSAA so that things can be seen as equitable
  10. I was very impressed by the list of accomplished wrestlers at Cathedral, Roncalli, and others that came up through the Indianapolis CYO wrestling organization - so there should be some credit given there also. I do think the coaches at Cathedral do a great job putting their wrestlers through a gauntlet of an extremely tough schedule to prepare them for the postseason - and I have seen their wrestler's names appear on many of the offseason's toughest tournaments also. At the risk of opening a can of worms, I will point out that Cathedral would not have won this year's championship without a one-year transfer who won an individual championship and garnered major points towards their team championship
  11. Get together 2 or 3 of the guys from some of those great teams of the past like Mater Dei 2003 and let them talk about what their 4 years was like, where they went after HS and what they are up to now Maybe also track down some state winners from way back when 60s? 70s? and have them talk about what the wrestling world was like back in the old days
  12. Sometimes there is a circumstance where a few parents in a community come together for the common purpose of advancing the abilities of their kids. Silas has been talked about a lot on this thread, but keep in mind that coming up through the tiny Shenandoah system, they had at one time formed a group of extremely talented wrestlers including both Slivka boys, AJ Black, Hayden Lohrey, and I am sure I am missing some others that Mr Allred could fill in. I don't know the story of when or how they all got together, but for both large and small schools, I think it is a powerful trend when you see a "wave" of kids around the same age getting after it in the offseason and feeding off of each other's accomplishments. May have been a similar circumstance with Hanover Central. I can remember Union County had a few seasons with multiple state placers also.
  13. Although I agree with you, that is somewhat my argument that says class wrestling (while it may help wrestling) may not be the best solution for the kids. The flip side of your argument is this... Why do some parents move their child from large schools to the smaller "country" schools? - More individual attention - A chance to be a starter (and/or possibly a star) at sports where they may not even make the squad at a large school - Environment where everyone knows each other Your comment "throw the other sports they most likely are involved in" is framed as a negative thing. I would contend that it is not. If your child's goal is to be a possible college wrestler, then by all means focus on the one sport, put "more emphasis on club and off season wrestling". The 2-3 hour drive for a quality club is definitely an obstacle, I will agree with that. However, since this is a wrestling board, these arguments always focus on the issue through the lens of the wrestling community only. One of the wonderful things about small schools is that a student can be (and is often expected to be) part of the football/wrestling/baseball/track teams. And also be in the school play, student leadership, etc. Rather than see it as a problem, I see it as a benefit for the majority of students who will not go on to play sports in college. Since there is a team state, if the small schools see success at that level and want to be a part of it then that is a great selling point to get more kids out and fill the lineups.
  14. The initial reaction confused rankings with earned placement. The rankings are locked at the beginning of sectionals. The #1 ranked wrestler placed 4th (ok due to injury) and the #2 ranked wrestler placed 2nd at his semistate. If the state finals were seeded, could you feel good about taking a lower ranked kid that had beaten the #2 wrestler the week before, and match him against the #1 or #3 wrestler? Latest head to head is the first seed criteria normally, so although it seems crazy the way it worked out, other wrestlers earned a better first match than the 2. The real unfortunate circumstance was for Parkinson i do agree that wrestle backs would be nice, though
  15. Let me just throw in here... TEAM class wrestling = YES INDIVIDUAL class wrestling = NO How in the wide world of sports did Silas Allred possibly manage to compete at the state level being from a 1A school, let alone win the whole shebang?!?
  16. Of course it's a silly debate - that's what makes fan-based sites entertaining! Everyone's got an opinion
  17. 106 Cernus vs Miller 113 Moran vs Cottey 120 Littell vs. Seltzer 126 Mendez vs Lowery 132 Garcia vs Mendez 138 Rooks vs Boarman 145 Lee vs Viduya 152 Rodgers vs Kervin 160 Slivka vs Dickens 170 South vs Deters 182 Brewer vs Walker 195 Allred vs Allred 220 Fowler vs Bates 285 Keys vs Parsons
  18. I’d like to see each school get 5 or 6 seats reserved per wrestler at state. Reserve and give them the good seats. That takes care of family and a few friends. The rest of the stadium is general seating. 2 consecutive open seats are not allowed. If you want to sit together you have 2 options - show up together or head up to the 3rd level. Ushers just enforce the one open seat rule
  19. Saving seats is getting out of hand. Many parents and grandparents just want to see their son wrestle. I ran into a mother last night that was chased from her seats cause she dared try to sit near the mat where her son was going to wrestle and another team’s fans had “reserved” three complete sections on level 2. She was very upset - this is out of control it shouldn’t be like that
  20. Some huge potential swing matches tonight for the front runners: 106 #9 Evan Dickey (Cath) vs #4 Isaac Ruble 126 #9 Ashton Hayhurst (EMD) vs #18 undefeated Dylan Stroud 145 #5 Orlando Cruz (Crown Point) vs #4 William Fiechter 145 #10 Brody Baumann (EMD) vs #7 Jajuan Anderson 170 #6 Gabe Sollars (EMD) vs #13 Gavin Layman 182 #3 Mccartney Parkinson (EMD) vs #1 Joseph Walker 182 #6 Johnny Parker (Cath) vs #2 Mason Winner
  21. I agree on this. Strong contenders, but not locks. I think they will be challenged
  22. Typically the wrestler receives 2 advancement points for each victory on the championship bracket (not including their final match), 1 point for a victory on the consolation bracket. The scoring for advancement when they started in the 2nd round is below. If they use the Friday night matches then Advancement scores listed below would be the same but +2 (for the Friday night win). So 5th place = Win (+2), Loss, Win (+1), Win for 5th
  23. On another thread, Trackgopher confirmed that there will be scoring for the first round! Not 100% sure it will include both advancement points AND activity points - but this will be a MAJOR wrinkle in the overall team scores. For those schools with difficult 2nd round matches where you may lose a wrestler - now they have an opportunity to score points in the Friday night matchup. I see this being a big boost for Crown Point - they have 5 #1 wrestlers coming in. Although their 2nd round is very tough - their first round could net them a LOT of points especially if the activity points are counted. Each of the top teams now has 8 or 9 opportunities for another 4 points added to their team score. This also will distance the teams bringing a lot of wrestlers from those with only a few good ones like Perry Meridian
