  1. Wow. I really assumed he would have one more final year left in him with having a decent team and bringing in Colman Scott already to help with guiding the program. Heck of a career for him as both a competitor and coach.
  2. I've been out of the International loop for a little bit with the NCAA season going on. When will Iran officially decide their Olympic representatives?
  3. Yes, but time, distance, and judge score based sports can do that more easily with a set cut number. It's not a one on one bracket.
  4. Our current Conference structure is 7 teams. In the last few years, we have seeded the Top 4 wrestlers and then drew in the rest. This helps with distributing the Bye better than if you seeded 5 or 6. After seeding the top 4 we have randomly drawn in the team that gets the Bye before placing the non-seeded wrestlers in the bracket. And then make a note of that. That Bye school is then exempt from receiving an other Bye (when at all possible) until the rest of the school has also received one. We open the Bye possibility to all 4 seeded wrestlers to ensure if a team has a large amount of 1 and 2 seeds they aren’t being negatively affected by drawing a first round Bye too many times. Basically pull their name out of the options before you draw. Obviously due to the nature of hoe some seeded brackets fall you end up having to give a team the second a Bye before another team may get their first one, but it often pans out OK in the end as long as you keep track of who has received a Bye as you progress through the weights. In a perfect world, each of the 7 teams should receive the Bye twice. But due to some seeding circumstances, occasionally a tram may ends up with 3 Bye's and another with only 1 Bye. That is the fairest system we have been able to manage for a 7 team tournament. You can decide if you then want to score placement points for the Top 4, 5, or 6 finishes. We decided giving placements points for 7 was a little much.
  5. Good for him to find an avenue to the next level despite being behind a starter. CG may roll deep but this is a major accomplishment for the program none the less.
  6. Man just read up on this. Crazy. That dude was always a quality guy when I used to run into him. A loss for the Indianapolis area wrestling community for sure Condolences to the family.
  7. Great to see seeing the girls get a chance to face both IL and Iowa.
  8. Two from the finals to win a state title. Paul Petrov - Has the confidence to cut Brenden Campbell with a little under a minute left to give Campbell the lead then finding a way to secure the takedown to win. Not the cleanest takedown but I was very impressed with the confidence to hand Campbell the lead and know you would find a TD to win in. Chad Ruggeri - Double Overs to throw and pin Dexter Larimore one of Indiana’s best HWTs of all time. Pretty much everyone had Larimore winning it but Ruggeri just went right in on him and chose to take the title for his own rather than be hesitant at such a big moment. I may have seen better takedown moves but not too many in such a clutch situation with a state title on the line.
  9. Boyd finishes 3rd. Still a great career for this young lady and great to see her come back from injury to make on more run at a title. Hope we see her at the World/Olympic Trials in the next several years.
  10. 125 is just a mess for Big10 and Nationals. I’m voting for a Battle Royal to decide it.
  11. You found Ficker. Though he’s often not hard to spot.
  12. Brands probably has more last minutes changes.
  13. Been saying for a while the top of this sport, and most sports, is becoming a little less accessible to blue-collar wrestlers/families than it used to be. Affordable access to wrestling opportunities and just simply the ability to travel (since many have parents who work a lot) is becoming hard for some families to overcome. Especially when certain events and academies are not within a short drive from the location you live in. It's awesome that some kids have the opportunity to make a major jump in their skill level. But a decent percentage of wrestlers are limited in what their family can do and really have to search for what rare options may present themselves if they want to make decent gains in their ability. Sometimes coaches have to be creative as well in order to help those kids get some type of opportunity. When the demographic of a large percentage of your team is within that socio-economic situation, obviously finding enough avenues to help them becomes a little more daunting. For several coaches, there isn't much of an off season anymore to start with, and then add on to that the legwork you'll also be putting into finding ways to help those types of wrestlers out so they can "shrink the talent gap."
  14. Glad to see you guys were able to get a few of our departed brethren added in. We may not get their post anymore, but those guys are definitely not forgotten.
  15. I wasn't sure which team rankings you are pulling this from. Does that list include only the public and private schools that participate in state competitions or does it include the major prep national teams, as well?
  16. Longest this thread has been inactive in quite a while. Guess it's a slow news month for the Iran contingent.
  17. If those are the defined rules then you have the be cautious with them. That being said Brooks seems to have the worst luck when it comes to his few MMA losses. First a controversial split decision in a fight where he had control of a lot of the action against a guy that would go on to be a 2x UFC champion. Then he knocks himself out while he was slamming his opponent in what was a very good performance before that moment. Get released by the UFC following a win as they were attempting to cut ties with most of the light weight division. And now this. The dude is still finding tons of success but he's having to get through some hard luck to do it. Definitely deserves a rematch.
  18. 113: 9 - Dickman 126: 12 - Schafer 132: 18 - Hockeday 175: 11 - Veasy (IN gonna still claim him)
  19. The former Yorktown standout looking to take another national title. She worked her way back from a prior season ending injury and has transferred to North Central. Hopefully she can get it done one more time in her final season of eligibility.
  20. While these other guys sure are entertaining and keep us on our toes I'm sticking with my original nomination for this first round and honoring those who had or have continued to bring a wealth of Indiana Wrestling knowledge and history this this board. As Team Garcia said @grecoref and @TheAncientElder deserve a ton of credit in that department. Plus, @hook and half continues to be a wealth of historical information for one of Indiana's best programs and the competition they faced. I'll cast my vote for the entertainment portion of the crowd next year, as you guys really liven up this place way more than I do.
  21. Lots of solid posters throughout the years. Many are still very active today and continue to bring great content. I’m especially appreciate to those who in recent years have helped grow the College Board from its basement dwelling to the useful resource it has become. But, as a historian at heart I have to give my original shoutout for great posters past posters like @TheAncientElder and current posters wrestling historians like @hook and half, as well as, elder statesmen like @Coach Peck. And @Y2CJ41 over the years has taken to collection and preserve many pieces of historic information, much which has became searchable on this website. feel it’s essential to show acknowledgement to those great individuals, teams, and moments that have made Indiana wrestling what it is today and those guys have been here to help ensure we keep that alive. I’m sure I’ve missed several other like them who have contributed a lot to the historical knowledge of this site, so hopefully some other posters can put them up as nominees.
  22. The other thing that would help is wrestlers starting their weight management plan during the preseason. Much easier to make a gradual drop that your body can handle over the course of a few months than trying to push to make a drop way into the season.
  23. And that is part about managing your weight that I think many HS kids and their parents don't get or at least aren't willing to fully buy into. Some kids can eat 3 decent meals regularly, have occasional cheat meals, and even get stronger as the season progresses all while maintaining or even losing weight. But that's because they and their parents have made the effort to ensure they are eating better and continue to work hard during practice. But, that's the off-the-mat dedication and mental game that some kids and parents have made the choice to buy into. We all hear about kids who say they can't make the weight though, but in some cases, I don't see that as a cutting issue, its poor off-the-mat decisions and lack of a buy-in to themselves, their team, and the sport. We all have some kids who are choosing to routinely make poor food choice decisions, sometimes overindulge, and then trying to over-exercise and starve a day or two before weigh-ins. We then often hear that same kid or parents say as the season progresses that they can't make the weight cut with most pointing out they are barely eating the last couple of days. To me, that is not a cutting weight issue it is a poor weight management issue. We often have to concede this routine isn't going to change and tell the kid and parent they will need to move up a weight class. But then low and behold most of those kids will balloon up close to the top of that new weight too and are still sluggish on the mat due to more bad eating habits. You can throw all sorts of nutrition talks and guides at them to help show that making better eating choices will improve their performance on the mat and make maintaining their weight all season possible. You can even point out that this isn't about eating small portions or only choosing to eat "twigs and leaves" every meal, but about pre-planning food decisions to ensure you have good options available on a routine basis. However, until the kids and parents (since they do provide some of those food choices to their kids have a better buy-in on the value of nutritious eating we will still hear some kids and parents talking about cutting too much weight and/or eating little days before the meet. I also believe there are some effective ways to promote healthy eating habits and removing some of the extreme cutting, but part of that also comes from developing a culture where the other teammates and family understand what supporting each other really means.
