  1. Army West Point wrestling has made some adjustments to their coaching staff headed into the 2017-18 season.  The Black Knights were also recognized by all 3 major recruiting media outlets as having a top 25 recruiting class for 2017-18 (first time ever).

    *  Braden Atwood (4X NCAA Qual. for Purdue) was brought on board the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant.  He is already at West Point and doing a great job with the program.

    *  Joe DeAngelo was recently hired as an assistant coach (2X NCAA qualifier for NC State)

    *  Cam Simaz has been hired as the West Point WC head coach and will coach in various capacities in the Black Knight program (NCAA champion from Cornell Univ.)

  4. Ben Harvey has been a mainstay in the Army West Point varsity line-up all season.  Last weekend, Cael McCormick was called up to the big leagues for Army's two duals against Lehigh and Bucknell at 165.

Both Harvey and McCormick fell short against a very tough Lehigh squad on Friday.  They both bounced back strong on Sunday against Bucknell where they both picked up bonus points for the Black Knights.  It was neat to see two IN boys -- back to back-- in the Army WP varsity line-up.

    Class Wrestling...

Class wrestling would most definitely help build and grow wrestling in Indiana.  It works in Ohio, Oklahoma, Illinois, and

and just about every other state across the country.  It would work in Indiana AND the 'middle class' would start to

             thrive again.

All of the states you list have a greater wrestling traditions than Indiana, and you have no idea whether class wrestling helped or hurt the participation rates. We only have post class #s from those states, without pre-class #s we are only assuming an outcome which hasn't been supported by data.

I would highly disagree that all of the states that have class wrestling have a greater wrestling tradition than Indiana.  I don't need statistical data to support every situation/decision that presents itself to me.  I highly doubt that the people, and societies, in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania, etc. are too much different than the people in Indiana.  Class football works in Ohio AND it works in Indiana.  The same would absolutely apply and work with Indiana wrestling.

  6. I remember when I was a freshman at Delta HS.  We had a full freshman team and we only wrestled against other freshman teams.  That was in the early 80's and as we all know, times have changed with respect to students participating in high school athletics (especially wrestling).

    1.  JV, Varsity 2, Varsity B, Split Squad --   call them what you would like.  If a program/coach feels that his 2nd string needs to

compete at a higher level then so be it.  People (i.e. - fans, some school administrators) get too hung up on what

we call our 2nd string teams.  Yes, one school's 2nd string may be better than another school's 1st string.  Get

past the labels and let them compete.

    2.  Common JV tournaments --  It is becoming very, very difficult to find JV tournaments that offer quality and quantity.  Some

schools don't have a large coaching staff, so they cannot afford to schedule a bunch of JV/2nd string events

throughout the season.  It is also becoming difficult to even find good JV events throughout the entire season

(within a reasonable driving distance).  Too much emphasis has been put on varsity in recent years; and not

enough on JV wrestling.  If kids have an opportunity to compete at the JV level, they will see value in their efforts

                       and your numbers will grow.

    What if....

This is completely hypothetical and would likely never go in our current school environments... but... what if we went back

to "all freshmen teams?"  Freshmen wrestling teams that practiced together, competed together, and only competed                  against other all-freshmen teams?  I am not insinuating that this would fix all of our sport's ailments, but I do think it would          help in building numbers in programs.  I do think we lose many average/new freshmen because they and/or their parents          don't like the thought of them practicing with upperclassmen.

  7. Franklin Duals (1/7) --

Franklin, Holt (MI), Jeffersonville, Ben Davis, Triton Central, Yorktown

Holt has several ranked wrestlers (152, 160 and 189).  Their 160 is ranked #1 in MI (D1).

There are several ranked wrestlers scattered throughout the 5 Indiana teams.

Should be some good duals Saturday in Franklin.

  8. I want to thank a few people who worked directly with me in preparing for this season's Team State Duals event.  I am sure JD (Minch) will have others to recognize who assisted him at the event.

    *  Adrian Troyer --  thank you for all of the work you did last spring during the selection process.  This guy is extremely thorough and his attention to detail is matched by few.  Great job Adrian!

    *  Dane Fuelling --  thank you for the massive job you have in gathering data on the teams quickly and seeding the event in a relatively short amount of time.  Please thank your committee personnel as well.  Job well done!

    *  JD Minch --  it's always a pleasure working with you JD.  I have enjoyed our trips to Ft. Wayne in the fall, meeting with Coliseum personnel and other planning committee members, and working with you in putting on a                              great event for the teams and fans at this event.

    *  Tim Smith -- In addition to Yorktown team responsibilities, this guy has also taken on the task of setting up the mats, taping them, and mopping them the past few years.  If you want something done right, call Tim!

You're the best Tim!  Thank you!

    *  Melissa Ritchie -- Melissa is our athletic office secretary at Yorktown.  She prepares and handles all of the team contracts for this event.  Great job Melissa... and thank you for being a team player.

    *  Pat Culp -- Another great job Pat!  No one has to worry when you are on the job.  You are a true professional and a joy to work with.

    *  Patt VanHorn --  Thank you Patt for everything you have done in staffing the event with volunteers.  Your hard work doesn't go unnoticed.

    *  Joe Caprino --  Thank you Joe for promoting the event on Indianamat and providing current tournament info. to wrestling fans across the state.

I hope the improvements we made to this year's event met with the teams' and spectators' expectations.  Great job to all of the teams who participated this season.

    Happy Holidays,

    Trent McCormick

  9. Back to just hard work. No Fun Allowed! Hate him or love him the perfect example is Coach Snyder. Remind me how good Brownsburgs program was before he got there. Or Portage before Vega. Or Penn before Harper. Etc. There are examples out there. It has more to do with coaching and adjusting to the times than trying to recreate an old vision!

Coach McCormick, class wrestling? Really? I thought we were kindred spirits!

Here is my experiment.  Let's try this.  In the same spirit that we treat the "team aspect" of wrestling in IN, let's take IHSAA football back to single class.  Yes, that means small and mid-size public schools across the state will have to go through Carmel, Center Grove, Warren Central, (fill in the rest of the big schools here) to win a state football title.  Heck, those smaller schools won't even win sectionals or regionals anymore if this is implemented!  So how long do you think it would take for reality to set in for these small to mid-size football teams/schools?  When the realistic hope of ever getting to shine in the limelight gets squelched, participation will dwindle.

Here's something else I will remind you of (that has certainly been shared before).

Ohio Wrestling (Classed) --  they have pretty darn good wrestling and participation there

Illinois Wrestling (Classed) -- they have pretty darn good wrestling and participation there

Pennsylvania Wrestling (Classed) -- they have pretty darn good wrestling and participation there

Iowa Wrestling (Classed) -- they have pretty darn good wrestling and participation there

Keep filling in the list from here.
