  1. This is a very tricky question (thread) to reply to. In my humble opinion I don't know that there is a correct answer to the originally stated question. There are so many factors that go into competing at all collegiate levels. Does it count if a wrestler started DI and then transferred or stepped away from the sport after a year or two? One could respectfully debate the fact that some wrestlers take non-traditional paths into their college experiences now days. Additionally, many wrestlers arrive at their college choice only to find that it wasn't what they expected; or the coach who recruited them has now taken a different job; or academics trip them up; or an injury derails their college wrestling experience. There are numerous factors that play out as an 18 year-old embarks on a college wrestling journey. There can be many pitfalls along the way... as is there can be many rewards to be had if a little grit is demonstrated.

With athlete retention in mind I believe more wrestlers (and their parents) could do a better job of 1)researching a variety of schools before making a final selection; 2)working on their time management skills in MS and HS to better ensure "life success" in college; and 3)realizing that wrestling at any collegiate level is very grueling. As they say... "it's a job."  You have to love the sport, be willing to navigate set-backs, and have the ability to keep your eye on the ball.

In getting back to the original topic, DI wrestling isn't for everyone. It is absolutely best-practice for an athlete (and his/her parents) to be realistic in what level of collegiate wrestling they want to take part in. A productive and fulfilling wrestling experience can be had at all collegiate levels depending on what the student-athlete is after. As a reminder... it is college... so some level of academic achievement should be placed into the equation. A wrestler at a DIII college studying pre-med is obviously a different situation than a wrestler navigating the rigors of a Big Ten program and schedule. Two different scenarios... two different goals in mind... both are to be applauded.

I tip my hat to any young man or young lady that finishes 4+ years of collegiate wrestling at any level and walks away with memories, achievements, and a college degree.

  2. MANHEIM, Pa. – Juniors Ben Harvey and Cael McCormick of the Army West Point wrestling team added to their academic honors for 2019 by being named Scholar All-Americans by the National Wrestling Coaches Association on Friday.

    Congrats Ben and Cael!  #studentathletes

  3. Congratulations Ben and Cael on getting the job done on and off the mat.  The EIWA announced its Academic Honors list today.  In addition to WP consistently ranking high in academic rigor, WP athletes must also navigate and carry out their military responsibilities in addition to athletic and academic tasks. I realize that I am a proud father of a WP Cadet, but I am continuously amazed at the daily rigors and expectations placed on these student-athletes. Again, congratulations to these young men, and thank you for your sacrifices.   #representingindiana

    Go Army!

  4. David Palmer

Legendary Delta/ Muncie Southside wrestler, David Palmer, lost his battle to cancer in late December. He was 54 years old.

In the early 1980's David was a one-time state runner up and a state champion for Muncie Southside as well as a 2x state champion for Delta HS. David led Delta to their first team state championship title in 1981 that eventually turned into 5 consecutive titles. In 1979 David became the first Indiana wrestler to make the world team and the first to win a gold medal. David wrestled for Oklahoma Univ. on a full ride scholarship and graduated with a bachelors degree in accounting.

David was an inspiration to all those that knew him and was always helping others.  He will be greatly missed!

Please join friends and family for a Life Celebration of David Palmer this Sunday January 14th at Mansfield Park in Muncie. Celebration begins at 4:00pm.

  5. We had a great time with this group of young men.  After going 5-0 and winning our pool, we ran into 3 outstanding academy all-star teams in the gold pool and went 0-3 to finish 4th overall.  Our guys really battled hard and carried themselves well.  Thomas Penola (Zionsville) went undefeated for Hoosier Hustle and wrestled out of his mind!  He was in great shape and pushed his opponents past their breaking point in about every match.  Several of our wrestlers rallied in individual matches to tie it up and then won in OT.  Each of the wrestlers on this squad undoubtedly had a weak spot or two exposed that they need to come home and work on, but that is why we go to events of this nature.  Many of the PA wrestlers really, really ride and turn efficiently on top.  Overall, a great experience with a great group of young men who each represented their school and community with great effort and sportsmanship.  Thank you to the IN and IL coaches who supported this project by allowing their wrestler to compete with Hoosier Hustle.  A special congratulations to Ty Mills and Thomas Penola who have committed to wrestle for Duke and Purdue respectively.  Two fine student-athletes!

As I told the wrestlers this past weekend, the upcoming high school season will be my 30th, and final, season as a head high school wrestling coach.  This past weekend was my last preseason event, and I, and our coaches, had a blast with this group of guys.  These guys were a class act all the way around!  Best of luck to all of the Hoosier Hustle squad members this upcoming high school season.

  8. Coach Ward, and his staff, are doing great things at Army WP.  In addition to putting together a top 25 recruiting class for this season, they are "teaching coaches" in the room.  Coach Ward and his staff are on the mat working with their athletes in the room every day on cutting edge technique and skills.

As mentioned in his bio., Coach Ward wrestled at Oklahoma State under legendary coach John Smith.  Coach Ward's experience at OSU is evident in his work ethic and mentoring of his athletes.

Throw on top of all of that the fact that there are 5 Indiana boys currently on the WP/USMAPS roster along with a new coach who also wrestled in Indiana (Atwood);  with another IN senior commit for next season already.  Coach Ward has a lot of respect for IN wrestling and has put his money where his mouth is in recruiting in our state.

I am looking forward to Coach Ward's sessions at our coaches' clinic this month.  Should be some good stuff.

Thank you to the IHSWCA for bringing in a head coach from a U.S. Service Academy.

  9. It is my understanding that Keith Davison is the new ISWA chairman.  I first want  to congratulate Keith on his new position and wish him the best of luck.

I would like to thank Louis Rosbottom for everything he, and his wife Sharon, have done for the ISWA over the years.  Their dedication and devotion to Indiana wrestling is immeasurable.   I had the privilege of sitting on the ISWA board of directors for roughly 8 years (a number of years ago) with the Rosbottom's.  When you start looking at the ISWA's annual budget meeting, services, programs, the ISWA office, trips, coaches, tournament management, etc, etc, etc, the ISWA is a HUGE undertaking and the Rosbottom's have been a positive influence and driving force behind all of these operations for many years.

Thank you Louis for your servant leadership style of management.  Indiana wrestling wouldn't be where it is today without everything you and Sharon have done with the ISWA.

    Regards,

    Trent McCormick

  10. We are in need of a 145 (+3) or a 152 (+3) for a duals event on Oct. 7-8 in PA. Our 152 can cut to 148 if necessary, so we have the flexibility of putting a call out for a talented 148 OR 155 to fill this open spot.

    Team dynamics: 2 state champs, a state runner-up, 5 state placers/qualifiers, and 4 semi-state qualifiers.

If interested, please email me with your name and high school state accomplishments over past 1-2 years.

We will wrestle 8 duals on Oct. 7-8 at the York Expo Center in York, PA.

We will see many good east coast teams at this tournament. We finished 2nd at this event last year.

If you have any questions, please contact me at tmccormick@yorktown.k12.in.us and/or 765-282-9136 (cell).

    Thank you,
    Coach McCormick

  11. The Hoosier Hustle travel team is coming together nicely for the upcoming trip to York, PA.  We have numerous state placers, qualifiers, and semi-state qualifiers on the squad.

This can be a tough time of the year to find "bigger" guys due to the high school football season.

In shoring up the team, we are looking for a 220 (+ 3 lbs) who would like to make the trip to PA with us.

Anyone with regional (or better) experience would be considered.  A football player could indeed still participate in this particular event if he wanted to.

If interested in more information, please contact Coach McCormick at tmccormick@yorktown.k12.in.us
