  1. Coach Ward, and his staff, are doing great things at Army WP. In addition to putting together a top 25 recruiting class for this season, they are "teaching coaches" in the room. Coach Ward and his staff are on the mat working with their athletes in the room every day on cutting edge technique and skills. As mentioned in his bio., Coach Ward wrestled at Oklahoma State under legendary coach John Smith. Coach Ward's experience at OSU is evident in his work ethic and mentoring of his athletes. Throw on top of all of that the fact that there are 5 Indiana boys currently on the WP/USMAPS roster along with a new coach who also wrestled in Indiana (Atwood); with another IN senior commit for next season already. Coach Ward has a lot of respect for IN wrestling and has put his money where his mouth is in recruiting in our state. I am looking forward to Coach Ward's sessions at our coaches' clinic this month. Should be some good stuff. Thank you to the IHSWCA for bringing in a head coach from a U.S. Service Academy. Coach McCormick
  2. It is my understanding that Keith Davison is the new ISWA chairman. I first want to congratulate Keith on his new position and wish him the best of luck. I would like to thank Louis Rosbottom for everything he, and his wife Sharon, have done for the ISWA over the years. Their dedication and devotion to Indiana wrestling is immeasurable. I had the privilege of sitting on the ISWA board of directors for roughly 8 years (a number of years ago) with the Rosbottom's. When you start looking at the ISWA's annual budget meeting, services, programs, the ISWA office, trips, coaches, tournament management, etc, etc, etc, the ISWA is a HUGE undertaking and the Rosbottom's have been a positive influence and driving force behind all of these operations for many years. Thank you Louis for your servant leadership style of management. Indiana wrestling wouldn't be where it is today without everything you and Sharon have done with the ISWA. Regards, Trent McCormick Yorktown Wrestling
  3. We are in need of a 145 (+3) or a 152 (+3) for a duals event on Oct. 7-8 in PA. 6. The Hoosier Hustle travel team is coming together nicely for the upcoming trip to York, PA. We have numerous state placers, qualifiers, and semi-state qualifiers on the squad. This can be a tough time of the year to find "bigger" guys due to the high school football season. In shoring up the team, we are looking for a 220 (+ 3 lbs) who would like to make the trip to PA with us. Anyone with regional (or better) experience would be considered. A football player could indeed still participate in this particular event if he wanted to. If interested in more information, please contact Coach McCormick at tmccormick@yorktown.k12.in.us

  11. I will be taking a travel team (Hoosier Hustle) to the Columbus Day Duals in PA in early October. (Oct. 7-8) We are in need of a 160 and a 182 for this team/event. + 3 lbs allowance. Preferably looking for wrestlers who have been semi-state qual. (to ticket round); state qualifiers; or state placers. This is a pretty competitive event with top notch teams from primarily the eastern states. Will wrestle 8 duals at this event. Hoosier Hustle currently has 7 state qual./placers; and 4 semi-state qualifiers on board. There will be a custom 2-piece competition uniform for team members on this trip. If interested, please contact Coach McCormick at tmccormick@yorktown.k12.in.us for further details.
  12. Army West Point wrestling has made some adjustments to their coaching staff headed into the 2017-18 season. The Black Knights were also recognized by all 3 major recruiting media outlets as having a top 25 recruiting class for 2017-18 (first time ever). * Braden Atwood (4X NCAA Qual. for Purdue) was brought on board the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant. He is already at West Point and doing a great job with the program. * Joe DeAngelo was recently hired as an assistant coach (2X NCAA qualifier for NC State) * Cam Simaz has been hired as the West Point WC head coach and will coach in various capacities in the Black Knight program (NCAA champion from Cornell Univ.)

  17. A big congrats to David, his family, and the Elkhart Memorial wrestling program. Purdue is getting a fine young man! Congrats Coach Weaver!
  18. I would like to see a 3 pt takedown. I would rather give 1 additional point for a takedown; rather than 1 additional point for nearfall.
  19. Ben Harvey has been a mainstay in the Army West Point varsity line-up all season. Last weekend, Cael McCormick was called up to the big leagues for Army's two duals against Lehigh and Bucknell at 165. Both Harvey and McCormick fell short against a very tough Lehigh squad on Friday. They both bounced back strong on Sunday against Bucknell where they both picked up bonus points for the Black Knights. It was neat to see two IN boys -- back to back-- in the Army WP varsity line-up. 20. I would highly disagree that all of the states that have class wrestling have a greater wrestling tradition than Indiana. I don't need statistical data to support every situation/decision that presents itself to me. I highly doubt that the people, and societies, in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania, etc. are too much different than the people in Indiana. Class football works in Ohio AND it works in Indiana. The same would absolutely apply and work with Indiana wrestling.
  21. I remember when I was a freshman at Delta HS. We had a full freshman team and we only wrestled against other freshman teams. That was in the early 80's and as we all know, times have changed with respect to students participating in high school athletics (especially wrestling). 1. JV, Varsity 2, Varsity B, Split Squad -- call them what you would like. If a program/coach feels that his 2nd string needs to compete at a higher level then so be it. People (i.e. - fans, some school administrators) get too hung up on what we call our 2nd string teams. Yes, one school's 2nd string may be better than another school's 1st string. Get past the labels and let them compete. 2. Common JV tournaments -- It is becoming very, very difficult to find JV tournaments that offer quality and quantity. Some schools don't have a large coaching staff, so they cannot afford to schedule a bunch of JV/2nd string events throughout the season. It is also becoming difficult to even find good JV events throughout the entire season (within a reasonable driving distance). Too much emphasis has been put on varsity in recent years; and not enough on JV wrestling. If kids have an opportunity to compete at the JV level, they will see value in their efforts and your numbers will grow. What if.... This is completely hypothetical and would likely never go in our current school environments... but... what if we went back to "all freshmen teams?" Freshmen wrestling teams that practiced together, competed together, and only competed against other all-freshmen teams? I am not insinuating that this would fix all of our sport's ailments, but I do think it would help in building numbers in programs. I do think we lose many average/new freshmen because they and/or their parents don't like the thought of them practicing with upperclassmen. Class Wrestling... Class wrestling would most definitely help build and grow wrestling in Indiana. It works in Ohio, Oklahoma, Illinois, and and just about every other state across the country. It would work in Indiana AND the 'middle class' would start to thrive again. Coach McCormick
  22. I would have to do further research, but off the top of my head... I think Delta had 4 state champs in 1981. Campbell, Heintzelman, Gadbury and Palmer. I would guess they likely had some other teammates place that year as well. That was one tough squad!
