  1. SImple Answer: No. It's not remotely necessary. In the entire state, how many regional 4's successfully get past the ticket round? 2? maybe 3? Going back to 3 per regional could shorten the day at semi-state and allow us to have wrestle backs from the quarterfinals. Not that the IHSAA would ever go for it given they would lose money on ticket sales.
  2. You claim to have agreed with me "right up to #2" then immediately go back on that and dispute my first point. Look, we can disagree about the ruling and whether or not he should be allowed to wrestle. We can disagree about who is at fault for him wrestling girls while being treated with hormones that give a competitive advantage (to be clear, the state governing body is at fault and no one else). What is not up for debate is the fact that Mack has decided to transition to male. He wants to be referred to as a boy, using male pronouns and his new name. To disrespect that and continue to refer to him as "he/she" is not "confusion" it's willful ignorance at best and outright bullying at worst. It is no different than if everyone in your life decided to stop calling you by your name and instead refer to you as Sharon. It's just being mean.
  3. If you're putting Sliga in there for his dominant senior year, there's no way you can leave Andrew Howe off that list. 3x Champ with his loss in the finals freshman year coming to a senior Reece Humphrey. Then actually did tech his way through the state tournament his senior year, and did it without really breaking a sweat.
  4. The difference being, no professional athlete has ever been PRESCRIBED steroids. Yes, doctors have provided them, but actually writing out a prescription creates a paper trail that nobody wants. Taking adderal has been proven to give an athletic boost as well, it increases force production and provides an increase in cardiovascular endurance. Not to mention the appetite suppression and increased metabolism that make cutting weight way easier. Would you like to ban every kid with ADHD from wretsling as well? He and his doctor have made a decision that hormone therapy is medically necessary for his well-being. Transgender teens that are not allowed to transition or are not accepted in their need to transition kill themselves at an alarming rate. When transition is allowed and accepted and supported, you end up with happy healthy kids that grow up and don't die. Making a transgender teen choose between competition and transition is just plain cruel. Change the rule, let him, and others like him, compete against the boys while taking their doctor prescribed hormone therapy. Problem solved.
  5. is it possible that our state tournament system (ie. no wrestlebacks, unclassed, etc.) is part of the reason the DII and DIII Indiana schools have been so successful. Wabash and UIndy understand what it means to be a 4x semi-state qualifier, that understanding of our system may give them an advantage in recruiting the DI caliber talent in Indiana that gets passed over by the big boys because they don't have the "state tournament" resume. Does anybody seriously think Riley Lefever (1x IN state runner-up) is a DIII level wrestler, probably half the guys on that list could at least compete for a varsity spot in a lot of DI rooms. Not really arguing in favor or against anything just a thought I had, Indiana's B1G programs have been mediocre for a while but our other programs (Wabash, Uindy, InTech, Trine, etc.) have seen quite a bit of success.
  6. A couple thoughts. 1st - He. His name is Mack, referring to him as she or her or worst of all "s/he" is just disrespectful. 2nd - I'm not sure it really matters whether or not he officially put in a petition to wrestle with the boys or not. He has stated he would rather wrestle with the boys but there is a rule against it. He is following the rules as they are written. The issue should be with the rule not with the kid that is following them. 3rd - It is not the place of a state athletic asocciation to decide what medication is "medically necessary", and it is definitely not the place for somebody on a message board to decide. There are a lot of reasons that people choose to transition, but none of them have anything to do with wanting to win a girls state title. To say that he shouldn't be allowed to compete because he is taking hormone therapy, which is prescribed by a doctor, is insane. Forcing a transgender athlete to choose between living in a body that fits their mind or competeing in a sport they love is just plain cruel. 4th - I have a feeling texas will be taking a look at their rules after all of this and I hope that other states with similar rules do the same. These rules need to be changed.
  7. No. Coaches salary is set entirely by the school corporation. But even beyond salary, coaches move to bigger schools for a lot of reasons, better facilities, more available club money, and even just the ability to reach more kids. A lot of guys move to a better school so their own kids can have more opportunities as well, both in the classroom and in athletics.
  8. This is the one argument more than any other where I come down fully on the class wrestling side of things. I distinctly remember whooping an Ohio state placer at an offseason camp. I was a one time semi state ticket rounder and never got past the regional other than that. It blew my mind when that kid told me he was getting interest from colleges, because I sure as hell wasn't attracting any attention. Yes, you still have to have the quality to back it up when you get there. But at the end of the day, a college scholarship is about a hell of a lot more than wrestling. It's an opportunity for an education that that kid may not have otherwise had access to. Anything that can help increase that opportunity is a good thing in my book. I still love the idea of a single class though. In my perfect world, colleges would recognize IN SSQ as the same level as a classed state qualifier. That's not the world we live in though.
  9. Picking out random schools and saying "look they have 2000 students and didn't have qualifier" is meaningless. 58% of 3A schools had a qualifier, 37% of 2A, and 14% of 1A. It's amazing to me that these percentages consistently match the percentage of total student enrollment in each class. 63% - 3A 24.5% - 2A. 12.5% - 1A Its almost as if it takes a special kid to make it to state regardless where he goes to school. And when you have 2000 kids walking the halls you're gonna end up with more special athletes.
  10. Wow 3/4 of the FW champs from the delta sectional. Looks like Delaware county is kinda carrying the Whole semi state out of mediocrity.
  11. Seemed to me their main goal was simply to drive the underhook and work for the pushout, especially in the DT match. Not really a lot of offense but with them continuously coming forward our guys were always on their heels and being put on the clock because of it. Also, the whole "wrestling Iran in Iran" thing doesn't help with us getting the calls of course.
  12. Jake O'brien did it in 2000 or 2001. He was clearly the class of the field that year and defaulted out to 4 at SS due to illness though. Not sure of any legit #4's that just caught fire at state.
  13. How does dual scoring work in freestyle? The scores I kept seeing yesterday looked like each win was worth 1 point regardless of margin but that wouldn't make sense with 13-13 going into 125kg.
