  1. I can pick up what you're putting down now. I think I interpreted your original message a little differently than it was intended.
  2. It's states 20-21 season and January 30, 2021, which would be the current season.
  3. I'm the parent of a wrestler than plans to be there. As much as I LOVE to watch my sons wrestle, I would be more than willing to stay out if that helps the kids wrestle. And that goes for the entire IHSAA season as well. If that's what it takes to pull this off, make it so. We like to say (think) it's about the kids. Time to live up to that if needed I so want to be there, I've maybe missed two matches ever, but this is about him, not me.
  4. We aren’t even sure we will have a season yet.
  5. Any updates on potential for Registration to open? Just hopeful that the IHSAA Go Forward announcement might improve the likelihood of pulling this off! Not being pushy, just curious and anxious.
  6. It's similar to locked hands where you allow the bottom wrestler to improve his situation before stopping the action. It should be a "free move". You allow the pin situation to resolve because; Team Points. But the second the pinning situation is stopped, the match should be stopped.
  7. I hate this post. It is unsportsmanlike and Elitist. I hate it every year. Root for your team/wrestler, not against others. And please don't say "It's all in good fun!" That is no better than "It's just locker room talk!"

  10. Yeah, I'm really struggling to see where the other wrestler is targeting his knee. And closed fist or open hand...either way, that was flagrant and over the top on his part. I think he was just frustrated that his knee was letting him down and took it out on the other guy. If I were to post a video and ask others to be the judge, I think I would make sure I had a much stronger case, with clear evidence.
  11. Well, this kids Father posted this and said you be the judge... http://myracinecounty.com/?p=20854 Have Fun!
  12. My point was not on recruiting, my point was on potential talent pool. How many Parochial schools are in a rural area more than 30 miles from a real urban center? There are a lot of advantages from economic, to support structures, etc. in urban areas that have an impact here. That said, Mater Dei is still exceptional. Some parochial schools have terrible wrestling programs. There is obviously a long standing tradition at MD and solid coaching that helps maintain a high profile program. I still say that it would be much more difficult to maintain in a true, Rural 1A school system. No real way to know, so I can only speculate.
  13. I would choose the best club/academy you can find. Have him take his lumps early. If he keeps coming back, he's a wrestler. Clubs and Academies are very focused on improving the wrestlers. The beatings are not nearly as severe as they are in competition, and he will grow.
  14. This, exactly this. You know the adage, "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard!"? Well, Hard work and no talent can't beat talent that works hard. Same goes for Large Schools vs Small Schools and to some extent, Public vs. Parochial. The large schools have certain advantages inherent to their size and location. If their coaching, desire and work ethic match that of a smaller school, they will win out more often than not. Mater Dei is a different animal as they are a Parochial School. Parochial Schools have advantages that other 1A schools do not. In many cases they are in a more urban setting and they are surrounded by several large schools that increases their pool of potential athletes. Most 1A schools are in a rural setting with zero other schools within a 30 mile radius. It just isn't apple to oranges.
  15. It is never a good idea to tell people that have criticisms the "Sounds like you should run it then" response. I also don't think it is helpful to reply to every suggestion with a reason why that suggestion "won't work". It comes off as very defensive and will create one of two reactions. Some people will stop giving feedback, and others will get mad and escalate. The best response is: "Thank you for your feedback. We are commited to making this event better and we promise to weigh all the feedback carefully as we prepare for next year's event." The fact is, MANY spectators were frustrated by a lot of different issues yesterday. I'll list a few, and no, I don;t want to run the event. I simply hope that I can add some other perspectives so that the current organizers can have feedback from people that were there in order to make imporvements going forward. Needed more communication in advance We were forwarded the information that our coach received, and a lot of detail was lacking: The inability to bring in outside food was never communicated $15 a ticket was never communicated $5 for parking was never communicated The schedule we had, was not the schedule that took place. Our bye was wrong, and while I am GLAD that ths consi round was at 3 and not 5, the schedule said 5 and some parents left to kill the time and either had to rush back or missed their child all together. Not enough concession stands Not enough bathroom space, and sharing with the wrestlers is never a pleasant experience. If I pay Bankers Life prices for my ticket, I exect a better experience once inside. I do not think having 12 mats in one space is important. I was there to watch my son and his team. I would rather have been in a different space with a better view. You should cater to the fans of the specific teams first, people who just want to see wrestilng without a specific affilitation can make a choice on which area/class to watch Need more guranteed matches for the 2 points spent Why did we stop at ties for 9th and 11th? There were four teams per class in the Consilation, have the winners wrestle the winners and the losers wrestle the losers. At least that way all the wrestlers get at least 4 matches out of the deal. I know, I know, if you want more matches, WIN! That is a great way to get teams to stop coming. Some programs are buidling and really want to experience the higher caliber of competition that an event like this can offer. They can learn a lot in these defeats and build from it. More matches is always a good thing. You need more volunteers. After paying my $15 to get in and having to take my food back to the car, I was asked to work a table for the day. I didn't get so much as a bottle of water for my time. I had good seats for two matches, that were other teams. TL;DR version: Too much focus on having all the mats in one space, not enough focus on Spectator experience and number of matches for the wrestlers.
  16. Sure, the logistics likely need to be considered carefully and there are definite concerns that need to be fleshed out, but the rules as they are today are a handicap, IMHO. OH, and BTW, as evidenced in my previous posts on this thread, I am actually Pro-Class wrestling, I just see that we are miles apart on the issue and perhaps a middle of the road approach could be found so that both sides concerns are addressed. Expand the pie, there is enough to go around for everyone, it does't have to be so black and white.
  17. THIS! Perhaps this is a happy medium. Being 4-5 deep in a weight class is an advantage, there is no way around that. If guys from smaller programs can get in a room with better wrestlers during the season, then everyone improves/wins. This would also account for program size versus school enrollment size.
  18. How is it weaker overall talent? This isn't scarcity unless we make it that. There isn't only so much talent to go around, we can grow MORE talent. Success, breeds success. Getting more athletes wrestling makes everyone better. The cream will still rise to the top. The best wrestlers will still get the best offers. More wrestlers get to taste success, and that takes nothing away from anyone. Wrestling was sent a strong message by the IOC. Failure to change with the demands of modern society will get wrestling left behind and is much more of a threat than any supposed weakening of the sanctity of the sport by instituting a class tournament like pretty much every other sport in the state. Smaller schools have to fight for every athlete in every sport. Many good athletes will choose the sport that gives them the best chance at making it deep into the tournament. So if an athlete has to choose between class A basketball and single class wrestling and they have a decent basketball team and they are competent in each sport, something has to break the tie. A better chance at making it to State would be a strong influence in such a scenario.
  19. This is not a good comparison. The Success factor is in place for a number of reasons. Most of those affected by the success factor? Private schools. We can debate all day why the small private schools regularly out perform public schools in athletics, but that is a different discussion all together which I do not pretend to know the answer to. I strongly believe that changing to a Class based Individual Tournament would increase participation, would expose more Indiana wrestlers to college programs and would allow more young men to be SQ's and State Champs. No one loses in this scenario, some just gain. How can that be a bad thing? So, you don't want the sport to grow? Or it can only grow if people who join share your opinions?
  20. Thus my admission of Anecdotal. My kids are way more active than I was as a youth, but that is hardly a valid dataset. When all is said and done, there will still only ever be a tiny percentage of all athletes that are able to compete at the highest level, even if all athletes compete from their earliest opportunity and receive all of the training available to them, there will be a sorting process and the overall percentages don't change. So we are creating a situation where it is becoming more or less required, and that can be good for the sport, especially looking towards international competition. Separating what the child wants from what the parent wants is a concern, it's difficult to know where to draw the line. Some will even argue that children don't know what they want and are unable to make life altering decisions, so the parent needs to make the decision for them.
  21. As you stated in the original post, interesting statistics. But they're just that, interesting statistics and by no means a valid data set from which conclusions can be drawn. You have demonstrated a valid correlation, but we have no data from which to determine the causation. There are a ton of variables at play and valid study would be needed to even begin to have a real discussion on the cause. I would argue that kids are simply more active in general at a younger age. When I was a kid, baseball in the spring/summer, football in the fall and basketball in the winter were pretty much your only options. And there was little to no activity outside of those seasons. Today, you can add many other sports to the mix, and there is likely a club of one kind or another that allows you to remain active year round in SOMETHING that you enjoy. Wrestling was unheard of before Junior High, and then, only the most dedicated would participate in AAU. Again, this is merely anecdotal, I realize that. Specializing in one sport exclusively can be a real gamble. Burn out is a big risk. So I concur that having so many opportunities to learn and practice a sport today is a great advantage to the youth. I will still reserve judgment on specializing on one sport until there is more data to research. Interesting that I got this article in my email yesterday, it goes well with this discussion: http://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2014/June/11/Time-Off-the-Mat Bottom line, good conversation, more research is needed to come to the truth.
