NOTES: Ruddick, according to head coach Matt Burlingame, showed plenty of potential during his first week of collegiate competition. Despite going 1-2, he led D3Wrestle.com top 20-ranked Colt Lovejoy of Ohio Northern 7-4 Dec. 11 before falling 11-9 and proved aggressive early on against IU's Taylor Walsh, ranked No. 3 on the Wrestling International News Division I individual poll for Dec. 8 before Walsh managed a fall … "Overall, although the final scores might not show it, I thought we competed better throughout the line-up Saturday than we did at ONU," Burlingame said. 15. Black and Gold dual campaign begins Dec 11, 2014 ADA, OHIO – While the final score of a non-conference dual against National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III No. 19-ranked Ohio Northern University read 45-0 against Manchester University Thursday, Dec. 11, Spartans' head coach Matt Burlingame came away with plenty of positives for the future. The Black and Gold narrowly missed avoiding the shutout at several turns. The freshman combination of Ruben Rodriguez, Jr. (Hammond, Ind.), at 125, and Chase Wilson (Peru, Ind.) dropped 4-1 and 4-0 decisions, respectively. Freshman 165-pounder Matthew Ruddick (Seymour, Ind.) gave the Polar Bears' Colt Lovejoy, ranked No. 16 by D3Wrestle.com, all he could handle for seven minutes, holding a 7-4 lead at one point before Lovejoy rallied in the third period to win 11-9. Sophomore 184-pounder Brian Clark (Milford, Ind.) put up five points in a season-opening 11-5 defeat, and junior heavyweightDustin Kult (West Lafayette, Ind.), facing off against second-ranked Cody Lovejoy, battled in a 5-0 loss. "It was a rough night but, with five starters out of the lineup, we're not going to be at our best," Burlingame admitted. "Beyond that, I think Ruben and Chase had winnable matches and came up short. Ruddick, in his collegiate debut, wrestled extremely well against a nationally-ranked opponent but couldn't hang on for the win. I felt Kult had a strong result against Lovejoy (ranked No. 2 nationally) despite only having been in practice the last two weeks." Manchester University continues dual competition Saturday, Dec. 13. They take on NCAA Division I Indiana University in a 12 p.m. start at University Gymnasium on IU's campus in Bloomington.
