  1. Has this been posted somewhere? I haven't been able to find it yet.
  2. Hey guys! Wanna see where your conditioning is at the beginning of the season? Come out to South Putnam on Saturday, November 3 at 10:00am for the first annual Eagle Fitness Challenge! A 5k run, pushup challenge, dumbell carry, wieghted rope pull, lunges, and burpees...any one of these individually would be no problem, but all of them in succession will test your conditioning! Here is a flyer. If you have questions, please let me know!! EAGLE FITNESS CHALLENGE Flyer.docx
  3. Here are some numbers based on the average genius rating of each sectional: Top sectional average genius rating - 52.38 Bottom sectional avg genius rating - 11.15 Top 3 sectionals are all above 45 Bottom 3 sectionals are all below 18 The average sectional is 31.3 When the range between the top and bottom is nearly 4x the value of the bottom sectional, it is difficult to say that equality and fairness were achieved. I realize that it is not possible to make each sectional perfectly equal, but this seems extreme. Also, removing two smaller schools from the Avon sectional in favor of two much larger schools made an already difficult sectional a real meatgrinder feeding into, arguably, the toughest regional in the state.
  4. Don't discount the other teams in this sectional quite so quickly. While the other teams in the Avon sectional may not have the depth that Avon and Brownsburg have, it doesn't mean they don't have quality wrestlers. Donald Campbell - Ben Davis is ranked 16 at 132 Kyle Shaffer - South Putnam is ranked 7 at 195 I know there are kids in this sectional that are unseeded or low seeds at Avon that have beaten kids from other sectionals who end up as the 1 or 2 seed. Every year there are SS caliber kids that do not make it through the Regional because there are two studs from Avon and Brownsburg at the top and two studs at the top of the Mooresville sectional. A third place finisher from Avon, or Mooresville for that matter (who might have been a sectional champ and SS qualifier), does not get through the first round of Regionals. Last year there was a fourth place finisher from the Avon sectional who had a win over a State qualifier yet did not qualify for SS. Just saying the other schools at Avon often get overlooked because they are not at the same level as Avon or Brownsburg.
  5. Is anyone wrestling here tonight? I haven't heard anything about it this week.
  6. I have a 182 who is interested. I will get him your contact info this afternoon.
  7. I suspect the drastic drop in participation percentages is due to kids who get to the SS level by seeing fewer kids from larger schools. It is always an accomplishment to win a sectional title and it makes the road to the SS much easier, but a sectional title that goes through a Perry Meridian, Carroll, Penn, Avon etc. speaks volumes about the quality of a wrestler.
  8. Given that this thread began with a discussion regarding the dominance of individuals in 3A schools in the Individual State tournament series and the difficulties faced by those in 1A schools in the State series; and, given the fact that the Team State selection criteria are based upon the results of individuals in the State Tournament Series, I wondered if there was any correlation between the 1A schools selected for the Team State event and the size of the schools in their respective sectionals. Here is what I found: No. of sectionals with < 3 1A schools:16 No. of 1A automatic qualifiers from sectionals with < 3 1A schools: 1 No. of 1A schools in contention for vote-in invitation from sectionals with < 3 1A schools:3 No. of sectionals with > 3 1A schools:14 No. of 1A automatic qualifiers from sectionals with > 3 1A schools: 9 No. of 1A schools in contention for vote-in invitation from sectionals with > 3 1A schools:3 No. of sectionals with < 3 3A schools:11 No. of 1A automatic qualifiers from sectionals with < 3 3A schools: 8 No. of 1A schools in contention for vote-in invitation from sectionals with < 3 3A schools:3 No. of sectionals with > 3 3A schools:14 No. of 1A automatic qualifiers from sectionals with > 3 1A schools: 1 No. of 1A schools in contention for vote-in invitation from sectionals with > 3 1A schools: 1 It is difficult to post this in a format that is easy to read. In summary, 9 out of the 10 1A automatic qualifiers come from sectionals with an above average number of 1A schools. In fact 4 qualifiers come from sectionals with more than 6 1A schools and 3 of those qualifiers come from two sectionals with 9 1A schools each. There are two additional vote-in candidates that come from these same two sectionals. That means that 5 of the 16 schools in consideration for vote-in eligibility represent two sectionals with 9 1A schools each. One of those sectionals has only 2 2A schools and the other has only 2 3A schools. Additionally, 8 of the automatic qualifiers and 3 of the vote-in candidates represent sectionals with fewer than 3 3A schools. I don't mean to take anything away from the accomplishments of these schools or their wrestlers. I am confident that they will represent themselves and the state well at the Team State event next year. However, I wonder if there are other teams that are just as deserving of consideration for this event that did not get automatic bids and may be overlooked or are not even in consideration due to the fact that they faced more large schools during the tournament series? Lake Station Edison, Churubusco, and Tecumseh are all schools that came out of sectionals with fewer 1A schools, more 2A schools, and more 3A schools than 9 of the 10 automatic qualifiers. One of these schools will not be invited to the Team State event.
  9. Thanks for the explanation Maligned. So if I understand this correctly, the Genius rating for the current season is pivotal in determining the sectional quota. Is the Genius rating then contingent upon the results entered in the results section on this website? I know many schools do a great job posting results here, but there are still some with very few results posted. It would be nice if everyone understood the significance of posting accurate results in a timely manner. Again, thanks for all the work that you guys put into making Team State a great event. We hope to be back there again in the next couple of years.
  10. Full disclosure -- I coach at a small school in the Avon sectional. I appreciate all the hard work and time that has gone into making the IHSWCA Team State a top-notch event. Those who have taken the time to research and develop this system have done a tremendous job; however, I am not convinced that using data from the State Tournament Series for the previous three years is the most effective method to determine the strength of individual sectionals and regionals (and therefore the quota categories) for the current year. This method does not account for the sudden emergence of very strong teams (Brownsburg) or the decline of other teams in the paired sectional. I will use the Mooresville Regional as an example since it is the one with which I am familiar. I am sure there are other scenarios similar to this at other sites as well. The Mooresville sectional was given a quota category of 6, meaning that the top 6 placers from Mooresville would likely qualify for the regional in an average sectional. This implies that the Mooresville sectional is extraordinarily difficult and should therefore dominate an average sectional. The Avon sectional was given a quota category of 4, meaning that it is simply an average sectional. You would think that the category 6 sectional would completely dominate the category 4 sectional. In the case of the Mooresville regional though, the opposite proved true. Here are some numbers from the Mooresville regional: Regional Champions Avon -- 11 Mooresville -- 3 Regional Finalists Avon -- 16 Mooresville -- 12 SS Qualifiers Avon -- 29 Mooresville -- 27 Head-to-head Avon had the advantage 51-38 I am not trying to degrade the Mooresville sectional, there are many great wrestlers there. I am simply trying to show that it appears the IHSWCA quota formula missed the mark on this one. I know at least one instance where a 4th place finisher from the Avon sectional pinned a regional champ and another ss qualifier both from average quota regionals. This is a kid who may be a ss caliber wrestler, but according to the formula used to calculate Team State scores he is only a 4th place sectional finisher. There is a big difference between being a ss qualifier and a 4th place sectional finisher when you consider dual meet implications. I don't know the answer, but I am willing to offer a suggestion. Would it possible and/or feasible to calculate quotas based on the results of the current year State Tournament Series? Maybe a point system could be developed where sectionals and regionals within each individual SS could be assigned a quota based on the number of athletes who win, place, or qualify for the State Finals. For example, a sectional with 4 State Finalists, 2 State placers and 1 State Champion would obviously provide a much more difficult path than one with 1 State Qualifier. Again, I appreciate all the work that has gone into this system. I am just offering one possible tweak.
  11. Elmore beat Shaffer 8-6 at the Mooresville Regional last year. I'd say that's putting up a pretty good fight.
  12. I was also at the match where the slam was called in the 220 pound weight class. It is unfortunate that the other wrestler had to be taken to the hopital for precautionary reasons; however, to imply that it was intentional or an act that was intended to show off or hurt an overmatched wrestler is absurd. Maybe i misread your post and you did not intend it to come across that way. I know the kid that was dq'ed was simply trying to return the other wrestler to the mat. They came down hard (it does happen in a physical sport like wrestling), he was called for a slam and dq'ed. His team lost a chance at the county title, as did he, and it could possibly affect his seeding for the sectional tournament. I don't think he needs to get beat up on indianamat as well!
