  1. They have to have had good coaching but you also can't discount the effect of having a wrestler like Mendez in your room for 4 years.
  2. Mater Dei fans have a right to crow a bit. They were handed a tough draw first round but as a team they wrestled hard. Coming from NE, I was rooting for Chesterton, who also wrestled well, but I have to concede that MD deserved the trophy.
  3. I agree. What makes it less beautiful is that the team state has less than 100% participation and is not sanctioned by the IHSAA. With IHSSA endorsement we could have regional qualifying tournaments for team state and remove some of the controversy concerning ranking. As far as wrestlebacks are concerned, the whole reason for single class individual system is to have the best wrestlers on the podium. Putting in an extra round to ensure this, especially at semi-state, is not an extravagance but a necessity.
  4. The state of Iowa has had and still has class individual state Championships. I wouldn't say that it has hurt participation or excitement of the finals. They continue to put out quality wrestlers. I have not done the numbers but I would say the they must have one of the highest per capita output of quality wrestlers.
  5. I think something happened in the transcription onto the web page as the wrestlers in the weights seem to be scrambled. At least in the East Chicago link.
  6. Penn looked sharp today 7 champs 3 2nd 3 3rd 1 4th All to Semi-state buzz-saw
  7. Nice press from FloWrestling. Good option for D I wrestling. https://www.flowrestling.org/video/6092840-the-panther-train-is-rollin
  8. Chuck Patten at Northern Iowa used to say, "Never fight Jaws in the water, you get a big boat with a big gun and blow him out of the water." He also said you have to wrestle like you've got sand in your A_ _.
  9. I understand the mistake as both are good coaches and Snyder used to be from our crosstown rival, but it was Brad Harper to took the trip and and was at Sarah Hildebrandt's corner. Just wanted to give the credit to who you intended.
  10. Sarah Hildebrandt has a very tough bracket but she has been working hard and can do it. Go Sarah!! Tomasello and Megaludis are wrestling first round. Should be an interesting match. Interested to see how Taylor Walsh does, it should fit in to his style.
  11. It was good to watch Zach Davis wrestle on ESPN, sorry to see him bow out but enjoyed seeing he still has his tough legs. Any insight as to J. Tsirtsis? He has looked like he is trying to keep from losing for quite some time. I see flashes of his old self but it seems like he just occasionally forgets to be cautious and then retreats back to caution. I am still a fan.
  12. What are the chances, Sean Mappes and Brian Harvey meet in first round.
  13. One thing it may show is that the percentage of the student body who go out for wrestling may be much higher in the small schools. I know in my small town in Iowa it was your civic duty to go out for wrestling. How many potential state champs are there in the big schools that never step onto a mat? Isn't participation at least one of the goals in the grand scheme of high school athletics?
  14. 126 I see Selis beating Hardesty. He gained some confidence in the lower weight and will beat him on a good day 138 Hatch wins with Manspeaker 2nd. I think he will beat Cotton again as I don't think Cotton will recover his knee fast enough to get the job done. Besides Manspeaker is coming into his own. 145 Beam and Laughlin could always go either way. I think its Beam's turn 152 Prentice wins if he brings his offense to his feet. I imagine that will be stressed this week in practice. 160 Swank over Malone every time now that Swank is feeling better. This may be wishful thinking but if things go well Penn could have 8 champs
  15. Penn has all 14 through Penn with 10 in finals
  16. After reviewing the video on The Cube, I could see Varner's extended leg hook Hardesty's ankle briefly, putting hyperextensive pressure on the knee. Good call by the ref, although I'm sure Varner didn't know what he had done. A brief explanation to the wrestlers after the first call could have possibly prevented the second call and putting Hardesty in a potentially dangerous position again. There were a couple very close calls at the end of periods, several of which determined the result of the match. I know in tournaments there is frequently someone hitting the ref with a towel when time is up. With three mats going on it may be advantageous to do this even in the finals. I assume that the assistant ref is counting out the time but I could see some advantage in feeling as well as hearing the end of the period. Frequently it is at these very times that the crowd noise is the loudest.
  17. Can anyone explain to me the two penalty points awarded against Varner in the finals?
  18. I am not sure what all the fuss is about. I am just glad someone is putting it all together as we can't depend on the IHSAA to do it. It is the champion that everyone remembers and if you beat everyone, that is you regardless of where you were seeded. Trying to seed a team of teenage kids with the outcome also depending on individual match ups, which may be adjusted at the last second seems to be dicey at best. If the organizers have agreed on a reasonable criteria and they stick by it, I will back them up. If the results of the criteria isn't what we in our own biases think is right, then we should just live with it and work to change the criteria if you think it is wrong. Remember though, the change you make may work against you next year.
  19. Brands and Sanderson have a job that doesn't discriminate against appearance but very few of the wrestlers we are talking about will have their jobs. I don't think that limiting someone's possibilities is what we are all about. It would be nice if the world looked past physical deformity but we are not there yet. We want people to focus on our talents and abilities in an interview, not that funny thing on our ear. I second the comment about the ear buds. I have found the soft ones work pretty well. We now have stethescopes that have soft ear buds but before that my ears were quite sore after using one all day.
  20. Culture can be changed. Look at Jim Crow laws and Sarah Hildebrandt. It starts with leadership.
  21. I agree. Maybe it would stop the dazed wrestlers looking at that strange thing they put on their head for the first time when they step out into the lights. Perhaps they would also figure out how to keep it on for the entire match. It would also help if all involved wouldn't consider a cauliflower ear a badge of honor. Hopefully wrestling won't be the most distinguishing activity in their life.
  22. Maybe we should include a division for "Most Enthusiastic Mother". I was sitting across the coliseum and noticed an enthusiastic fan for Mason Parris who could only have been his mother. No wonder he wrestled so well. Maybe we should run a parallel off season training course for mothers. She could be hired as a consultant. It should probably also include some coronary prevention and maybe CPR certification.
