    Past Five Star Matches

    • Blake Maurer vs. Alex Dolly - 2003 IHSAA State Finals (watched via YouTube, thought I was actually there; that’s how good it was)
Paul Petrov vs. Brenden Campbell - 2012 IHSAA State Finals

    • Cody LeCount vs. Tommy Forte - 2014 IHSAA State Finals

    • Chad Red vs. Nick Lee - 2016 IHSAA State Finals

    • Robert Samuels vs. Rickie Clark - 2017 IHSAA State Finals

I was there for all of the above, except Samuels/Clark in 2017. Also, witnessed Harper/Carr in person. That Petrov/Campbell match is my favorite one.  Unbelievable action.

Where do Lee and Parris go from here? Do they redshirt? When is an ideal time for them ton redshirt?

Can Red and Micic take an Olympic redshirt still? If so, will they?

    Don’t believe Red qualifies

    from an article on Flo:

Just two months out from the 2019 NCAA championships, we now have an added layer of intrigue as the Olympic Redshirt criteria have been released.

Let's first take a look at the criteria:

    1. Past national team members (top three from the World or Olympic Team Trials)
    2. Top eight at the 2019 Senior U.S. Open
    3. Top three at the 2019 NCAA Wrestling Championship; or NCAA champion from a previous year AND top two from the 2019 U23 World Team Trials (must accomplish both).
    4. Previous Cadet, Junior, U23 world medalist

Obviously, no one has yet met criterion No. 2 and No. 3 as NCAAs and the U.S. Open haven't occurred for this year. But, who's already met items No. 1 and No. 4, meaning they can apply for an Olympic redshirt to miss the 2019-20 NCAA season?

Qualifiers of No. 1 - Past national team members (top three from the World or Olympic Team Trials)

Mason Manville, Penn State - 2017 Greco-Roman World Team Member at 75kg

Nick Reenan, NC State - 2018 National Team, second place at 86kg

Jaydin Eierman, Missouri - 2018 National Team, third place at 65kg

Tate Orndorff, Utah Valley - 2018 National Team, third place at 130k (Greco)

Qualifiers of No. 4 - Previous Cadet, Junior, U23 World Medalist

Jordan Wood, Lehigh - silver medal, 2014 Cadet World Championships

Owen Webster, Minnesota - bronze medal, 2015 Cadet World Championships

Jarod Verkleeren, Penn State - gold medal, 2015 Cadet World Championships

Yianni Diakomihalis, Cornell - gold medal, 2015 Cadet World Championships

Spencer Lee, Iowa - gold medal, 2016 Junior World Championships

Mark Hall, Penn State - gold medal, 2016 Junior World Championships

Daton Fix, Oklahoma State - bronze medal, 2016 Junior World Championships

Taylor LaMont, Utah Valley - bronze medal, 2016 Junior World Championships (Greco)

Travis Wittlake, Oklahoma State - bronze medal, 2016 Cadet World Championships

Jacob Warner, Iowa - bronze medal, 2016 Cadet World Championships

Kurt McHenry, Michigan - gold medal, 2016 Cadet World Championships

David Carr, Iowa State - bronze medal, 2016 Cadet World Championships

Vito Arujau, Cornell - silver medal, 2016 Cadet World Championships

Mitch McKee, Minnesota - silver medal, 2017 Junior World Championships

Ryan Deakin, Northwestern - silver medal, 2017 Junior World Championships

Zahid Valencia, Arizona State - silver medal, 2017 Junior World Championships

Kollin Moore, Ohio State - bronze medal, 2017 Junior World Championships

Gable Steveson, Minnesota - gold medal, 2017 Junior World Championships

Cevion Severado, Missouri - silver medal, 2017 Junior World Championships (Greco)

Jacori Teemer, Arizona State - bronze medal, 2017 Cadet World Championships

Will Lewan, Michigan - gold medal, 2017 Cadet World Championships

I don't think it is fair to say that Hidlay was robbed, unless you think he should have gotten a takedown in the final seconds.  The reversed takedown call in the first period was a curious one.  But if it held, I have ZERO doubt Nolf would have wrestled differently going forward.  You can't assume the rest of the match would have played out exactly the same if the score were 2-0 after the first period.  That said, Nolf escaped and squeezed out a win in a match he could easily have lost.  I think that is fair to say.

True but you are assuming as well. Nolf May have wrestled differently but maybe it wouldn’t have mattered. I know Hidlay looked like the better wrestler. And I think it’s fair to say he was robbed because that TD very well could’ve won him the match.

  4. Overall thoughts:

    1) Embarrassing that Nolf won that match. Absolutely outwrestled and Hilday was robbed. Nolf is out of the Hodge and it’s all Nickal at this point.

    2) It didn’t make sense at the time and makes less sense today but they should’ve never pulled Parris’s redshirt. You could clearly see he needed a year to grow into that weight class.

    3) Surprised by Lewis but maybe we shouldn’t be. Made a junior world team. Want to be elite? Make age-level world teams. Look at the guys who’ve done in on the world level. Lee, Fix, Yianni, Zahid, Hall, Steveson, etc.

    4) Steveson should’ve never lost that match. I’m actually shocked he didn’t get it done. Got sloppy on one exchange so it’s his own fault. But I hate when guys like Cassar get rewarded with absolutely no offense.

    5) I have a buddy who wrestled at Lowell and grew up around the Deans. So I’ve always rooted for them from afar. Good for Max Dean. As for Cornell, I think if I had a son who was being recruited right now. It would be Penn St #1 (and I dislike penn state) and Cornell #2. Those two programs always seem to get the most out of their guys.

    6) Indiana as a state has a long way to go.

    7) really excited for Fix-Suriano. Anyone else remember that insane marathon match they wrestled at who’s #1?

😎 Yianni might be my favorite wrestler in the entire NCAA. Just fun to watch. I think Erieyman (spelling) was the only guy in that weight class who can beat him.

    9) A topic for another day but how many of these guys will take Olympic redshirts next year? A lot of these guys have had world level success. See #3 above.

    10) Finals picks:

Lee, Fix, Yianni, Ashnault, Nolf, Joseph, Zahid, Dean, Nickal, Cassar

  5. 1) 100% agree on the step out

    2) First injury time used when opponent has not been called for an illegal move = opponent gets choice. Second time wrestler must withdraw. Stops (hopefully)wrestler from using injury time to recover and if a wrestler is that injured he must stop the match twice, probably shouldn’t be in there.

    3) I’m good with a 4 point near fall and a 3 point takedown. Keep rewarding offensive wrestling

I was hoping Lee would get the first seed so he could avoid McKenna until the finals.

If the seeds hold, I can see Red upsetting Carr and making the finals.

Looks like it was smart for Carr to sit out the Penn St dual to preserve his seeding.

  7. Don’t think you’ll ever get full wrestlebacks at state. To the IHSAA the point is to crown the champion. So it doesn’t matter to them that someone who got 5th shouldve been 3rd.

Any wrestleback efforts should be aimed at the semi state. Go back to taking three from regionals (have to win two matches) and add a wrestle back round to semi state.

    Compared - (132) Indianamat #1 Asa pins #2 Viduya.

    (126) Indianamat #1 Jesse 6-0 dec. #4 Rioux

Hard to know for sure but I believe it could've been a bigger spread than a 6 point victory? It looked like he wanted to cut Rioux and keep going after it but coaches content to pitch the shut out?

Believe it or not, I'm on the fence with this one.  I tend to give Lee the nod (I know, I know...homer) strictly on his dominance.  Here's a reminder of his 2014 post season run starting at semi state.  I don't see the brackets for sectional or regional that year, but I'm confident that he teched or pinned his way through those as well.

    Evansville Semi State

Tech Fall Payton Reese, Franklin 23-7 3:19

Fall over Brent Haynes, Charleston 2:20

Fall over Elliott Malloy, Danville 2:27

Fall over Quenton Harris, Avon :34

    State

Fall over John Hunting, Rochester, 1:26

Fall over AJ Belden, Westfield, 1:50

    Loss to Micic 10-3

Tech Fall over Erique Early, 24-9

I love Lee, but outside of Micic (who I love as well) that's not exactly a murder's row.
