National Titles for 3 Indiana High School grads
Wrestling Fan and 6 others reacted to maligned for a topic
In case you missed it on X or the college thread: Christian Mejia from Elkhart Memorial, Derek Blubaugh from Bloomington South, and Shawn Streck from Merrillville all picked up D2 national titles last night. Mejia had finished 5th twice before, was seeded only 3rd, and was in his final year of eligibility. Blubaugh had twice been national runner-up to his finals opponent, and had lost to him 5-0 two weeks ago, but finally got over the hump. Streck picked up his second consecutive title. Congrats, guys!!7 points -

Wrestling not important to IHSAA
PatParham and 5 others reacted to formercollegekid for a topic
So this year's state tournament was "fine" and you are no less a state champ, placer, or qualifier if you went to this one than if it was held at indy or somewhere else. However blindly acting like it was all sunshine and roses is silly. Evansville as a city did great. Most people found criticism with the IHSAA leadership. They could have moved the state tournament. Do it the same time as swimming. Ncaa does it all the time especially at the D2 level. It's a great atmosphere. . . It's also cheaper for most schools. 1bus, better hotel rates, AD only has to be in one place. Communities love it. Ihsaa leadership wanted to be at all the state events. Even came out and stated travel to and from the different sites on competition day was not something they were interested in doing. I think some of you would feel differently if your loved one was competing in this tournament for possibly their first and/or only time. Easy to blow off poor planing and tickets problems if you already have a "hookup" or you don't mind spending $102 on tickets. moving wrestling was the path of least resistance. Wrestling is a second class citizen in Indiana. It probably won't change until we get a "wrestling guy" on the ihsaa staff. So was this year's state tournament perfect? ? ? No... is it time to move on? Definitely Ps. Shout out to this 2024 class, Guys like May, Leavell, Ison, and Myers only got one "normal" year 2021- no fans present 2022- split parade of champions 2023- Normal year**** 2024 moved tournament6 points -

If you are a Senior and looking to wrestle in college and still looking for your home at the next level, I would like the opportunity to talk with you about the opportunity here. This year we had 4 National Qualifiers and 8 Academic All-Americans. In the past 5 yrs we have had 14 National Qualifiers and 18 Academic All-Americans. I think he ended up wrestling the perfect match. He pressured, pressured, pressured, wore him down, and kept testing the waters to snipe a low attack all through the last half of the match before finally getting that opening at the death. It was absolutely perfect and he needed every second to pull it off. What a thing of beauty!4 points -

Article: 2024 Olympic Trials Indiana Notables
MUSKEEWRESTLER and 2 others reacted to Y2CJ41 for a topic
Wrestlers from all over will converge upon State College, Pennsylvania Friday and Saturday for one of 18 coveted spots on the Olympic team. Seven wrestlers with Indiana ties will look to call themselves Olympians after the dust settles on Saturday evening. Men's Freestyle At 65kg there are two entries from Indiana in Nick Lee and Jesse Mendez. Lee is coming in as the top seed, while Mendez is the 11th seed. This weight is not qualified for the Olympics yet, so the winner here will go to Turkey with hopes of getting a qualifying spot. Lee won the spot last year and wrestled at Worlds, but did not qualify the spot. He potentially see Penn State teammate Beau Bartlett or 2023 NCAA champ Andrew Alirez to make the best of three finals. Moving up to 97kg we will see Christian Carroll attempt to make the team. He qualified at the Last Chance Qualifier a couple weeks ago and slots in as the 9th seed. He will have Iowa's Anthony Cassioppi in the first round with the winner getting former Olympic medalist J'den Cox in the quarters. At heavyweight Mason Parris will sit out until the finals on Saturday. He will away the challenge tournament winner in a best of three series due to winning a bronze medal at last year's world championships. It will be very fitting to see Parris in Paris this summer. Women's Freestyle Three wrestlers will look to earn spots on the team in Women's Freestyle. All of the women's weights are qualified for the Olympics which means winning here will get you a trip to Paris. At 50kg the Queen of Granger Sarah Hildebrandt will be sitting out until Saturday's best of three finals. She has medaled multiple times on the world stage and looks to make her second Olympic team. Kayla Miracle will be in the best of three series at 62kg awaiting the winner of the challenge tournament. She was an Olympian in 2021 and qualified the weight again for the Olympics at the Pan Am qualifier. Lastly, Yorktown's Alara Boyd will look to earn a spot at 68kg. She comes in as the 5th seed in the challenge tournament. She has multiple world medals and will be a threat to make the best of three series against Amit Elor. Schedule Friday, April 19 Session 1: 10:00 AM - 3:30 PM Challenge Tournament: Preliminaries, Quarterfinals and Consolation Rounds* (ALL STYLES AND WEIGHTS) *All championship matches will wrestle prior to consolation rounds Session 2: 6:30 PM - 10:00 PM Challange Tournament: Semifinals and Finals (ALL STYLES AND WEIGHTS) Saturday, April 20 Session 3: 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM Final 2 out of 3 Championship Series Round 1** **Weights not currently qualified for the Olympics will wrestle match 2 in this session Challenge Tournament: Consolations, Consolation Semi-finals, 3rd place and True 3rd (if needed) (ALL STYLES AND WEIGHTS) Session 4: 6:30 PM - 10:00 PM Final 2 out of 3 Championship Series Round 2** **Weights not currently qualified for the Olympics will wrestle match 3 at beginning of session (if needed) Final 2 out of 3 Championship Series Round 3 (If Needed) How to Watch On Peacock and USA https://www.themat.com/news/2024/april/16/how-to-watch-live-u-s-olympic-team-trials-wrestling-live-on-peacock-and-usa-network Brackets Brackets on TrackWrestling TheMat.com Coverage Page View full article3 points -
QUESTION: Is GOAT Talk In Wrestling Only Centered Around Championships?
GenHeavyHandz and 2 others reacted to SIACfan for a topic
In an individual sport, an individual must stand a top the podium to be the best. In team sports, an individual can clearly be the best individual but not win team championships because of a lack of supporting cast members. When it comes to the GOAT, even in team sports, individuals will be judged in the end by titles. But the lack of titles does not eliminate them from the discussion. In individual sports it absolutely does - IMO.3 points -
Team sports vs individual sports are very different. If you aren't winning titles eventually as an individual, you're losing matches and can't be considered the best. In team sports, you could lose games but still be clearly the best individual. I do agree that being a 4-timer or being undefeated for a career is overrated. Mason Parris losing a match as a freshman at a big guy weight or Howe losing early to a fellow all-timer shouldn't mean anything when compared to 4-timers that were at low weights and/or didn't face royalty as freshmen.3 points

I'm no expert & am in no way close to the situation. But looking at it from a far, 17 pounds is a lot of weight to shed & keep off for an entire college wrestling season for someone built like Christian Carroll. I would suspect he is already on a pretty strict diet just to be at 97 kg, but again I have no real insight except that he wrestled 220 as a junior in HS. Cutting that kind of weight & being competitive at the college level can be extremely difficult. Mendez is a good example. He was a completely different animal this year at 141 vs 133 his freshman season. He was much more powerful this year. Chrisian is a perfect example of why college wrestling needs a weight class between 197 & HWT. And with the recent development of the competitors in the HWT class in college, it is only getting tougher for guys who are at their best around 210-220 pounds. I'm not actually suggesting adding a weight class to college but just restructuring the classes to: 125 133 141 150 160 172 184 197 215 HWT It more closely follows the international weight classes to boot.3 points

Fun first round...a few things I saw: --Nothing comes easy in this tournament! So many high seeds got pushed. --The jury's still out on Starocci. He didn't look like Starocci from this season, but he didn't need to. --Blake Boarman should have been in this tournament. Both of the other ranked guys from his conference that were in a 3-way results ring-around-the-rosey with him during the duals had very impressive R32 wins. And the 3rd guy that got an automatic bid won the 32/33 match over Cayden Rooks. --IU has 3 guys with legit shots at being AAs. Lee continues to get it done in tight matches. G-Rooks continues to never show any quit and be a handful for anyone. And #23 Fongaro got a huge upset--coupled with the #26 also getting an upset so that he's now a 50/50 to get to the quarters. --Allred also got a big favor with the #26 from VA Tech upsetting #7 Glazier. Glazier crushed Allred during the year--but Silas tends to be about as steady as they come against guys he should beat. If he keeps his nerve and gets to the quarters, he obviously has two shots to win matches that would earn him AA status.3 points -
