They are both phenomenal wrestlers all of Indiana has been lucky to witness. Period. Lee creditials are higher outside of IN b/c Parris was a great football player. Well not b/c... I should say that’s b/c that’s the way life is... Both guys I am glad to have met & spoke to. I think both kids compete in the future for an Olympic medal. Thanks for the memories fellas!

  4. It's actually quite a bit different in wrestling because the score differential is the collection of 14 separate events that are all contested with top effort. In professional sports, where the margin between top teams and low teams is very slim comparatively speaking, it makes sense to limit point differential results because the assessment of two teams' quality difference in a 57-3 game or a 45-14 game is negligible since so much of the game was played with non-standard substitution, tactics, and effort. In wrestling, we actually have to adjust the scores of matches between highly ranked and low-ranked teams so that the top teams aren't dragged down by "only" winning 84-0 over a team that is 100 points lower in the ratings. It is actually a phenomenon that exists in every score-based rating of this type in any sport that certain teams are capable of crushing anyone that's a notch or two below them because of their balance even though they don't have the talent/star power to hang with teams rated right around them. But that doesn't necessarily mean they're "overrated" in terms of their rating "score" because the rating reflects their expected strength against EVERYONE--not just the teams right next to them. Win/loss based ratings will better reflect some of the slotting of what teams seem to "deserve", but will struggle to capture the true talent of teams that faced a very difficult schedule or teams that happened to lose a few close matches and are overall far less predictive of future results. Vegas is able to set lines for specific matches that better reflect all of these tendencies because they can build additional elements into point spreads such as matchups, injuries, etc.; but again, they always use score-based ratings like Genius uses as the starting point. For your beloved Raiders, they would look at matchups and know you're actually a 60-point favorite against someone 45 points lower in the ratings but perhaps a 15-point dog against someone right near you. But those two facts balance each other out in assigning a "starting point" rating.

  5. There's no Genius system...people are confusing things. The Genius ratings have nothing to do with Team State qualification other than assigning quality levels to sectionals and regionals. You earn your Team State spot based strictly on your individual tournament series performances. The same scoring system that suggested Cathedral would be a top 5 or top 10 team every single year it's existed is picking Cathedral to be the best team in the state next year by a good margin. Strength of schedule does not lower or raise your Genius rating. Performing poorly against any team--whether bad or good--would lower your Genius rating. We only show the strength of schedule numbers of the sake of interest--they don't impact anything for any team in any way. They are a simple average of the quality of teams you faced. It's just the nature of things that if you face #50 in the state two times, your average "strength of schedule" will be higher than a team who faces #1 and #300. No one can argue that Cathedral faces a murderer's row all season long--but the AVERAGE opponent faced by Cathedral is lower than some others' average opponents. But Cathedral smashes those teams and that's fully incorporated into the rating. Their rating is NOT dragged down by facing those teams. And any numbers about any team's strength of schedule has ZERO IMPACT on anything related to Team State selection.

I was killing time watching matches on You Tube today and found Mason Parris frosh semi-final match against Chase Osborn in 2015. I had forgotten how close, and slightly controversial that match was. A quick recap: Osborn controlled the match early with 3 take downs, getting in on a single leg fairly easily and finishing strongly. Mason battled to stay in it with a mix of reversals and escapes. About mid-way through the 2nd period Mason started to change the momentum. Osborn got his 4th TD :30 into the 2nd period to lead 8-3. Mason reverses to make it 8-5 at the one minute mark of the period. The match was marred with several delays for blood time all the way down to :02 remaining. It certainly disrupted the flow of the match. Mason let's him up to make it 9-5 and can't take him down buy fights off shots that were scoring early, ending the 2nd at 9-5. Parris starts the 3rd period down and finally gets the escape @ 1:22, making it 9-6. A quick low show from Mason nets a TD followed by a quick release making it 10-8 @ :59. A standing go behind and a brief scramble and Parris ties it at 10 w/ :41 remaining. More blood time at :32. After blood time, MP let's Osborn up so they start neutral. It's 11-10 w/ :32 to go. Mason gets in a shot but Chase fends him off until Mason makes a quick move that would have resulted in a TD but he runs out of room and they go out of bounds at :19. At this point Mason tried everything but Osborn is on skates. Osborn backs straight off the mat and gets a stalling warning. :08 to go. More blood time. Same exact thing, Mason pushes, Chase backs off the mat. Parris asks for the stall call along with the crowd, doesn't get it. Back to the middle w/ :02 left. More blood time. Caution on MP on the whistle. Reset, add :02 back and Paris shoots, Osborn backpedals off the mat again. No stall call again, to the dismay of a very loud crowd. Final Score 11-10 Chase Osborn. The match was a true tale of two halves. One can 2nd guess whether Mason should have let him up when tied 10-10 at :30 left, but he had taken him down twice in less than a minute. One can wonder if there was no blood time, how would the match have turned out. But that's wrestling and Chase Osborn goes on to finish an undefeated season and a State Championship. Mason wins another close match to finish 3rd and never loses a HS match again, netting 3 State Titles along the way.

  12. We were wall to wall tonight at the 'burg. Had studs from Mooresville, Edgewood, Ben Davis, North Montgomery, West Lafayette, Roncalli, Cascade, and of course Brownsburg. Christian has already said that he will bring some of his Yorktown boys as well for next week, so clear your schedule because it will be another good one next Thursday!

  14. Absolutely! He was healthy his sophomore year and didn’t get touched all year. His junior year, he hadn’t conditioned, trained or practiced for 10 months leading up to the final and still almost won.

  15. Are we going with the overtime rules for Blake's years where you went 1 minute on your feet then a coin flip for ultimate ride out or the current overtime rules? Even a better question, do we think we could get Blake and Drew to wrestle NOW? I think Blake might still have a few tricks up his sleeve and some gas in the tank.

  20. Man, Warren Central was a meatgrinder last night, many studs and many live go's. The thing that stands out the most was Coach Krulik's stories, I don't know if I ever will be the same. I'll never take my puppy Jett over to Krulik's house! But come on out to the 'burg tonight and learn from BLee who is one of the states finest. Maybe one day I'll get a business card and say I helped train him!

  24. Do this: 1. Take a given team you think is overrated or underrated in these ratings and add up their plus/minus from every single dual meet for the year. Then, add in their plus/minus for every single opponent faced in tournaments for the year (but only take 40% of that tournament final total because we only value individual tournament results that much). 2. Go to the ratings and add up the plus/minus between the ratings for every single team they faced for the season in the same way you did for the real scores in instruction #1. The results of these two calculations will be identical in every case for every team in the state. They are all perfectly slotted according to their real-life results for the whole season--not according to one or two cherry-picked results or theoretical results. If you want to argue that a particular team was missing some guys for 3 weeks or that certain teams' ratings are padded by weaker schedules or other things--there are certainly some cases like that, I'm sure. But the ratings reflect one thing and one thing only: full-season results for everyone with zero guesses or biases included in any way.

Proud of the Little Giants. Was hoping to see them get 7 through after the first day, but it didn't help that Baldwin Wallace couldn't lose. There should still be a strong showing in Cleveland for Wabash!

  32. Wow....how deep is a weight when Angel Escobedo is the 9 seed with a 52-1 record? If I remember correctly, his only loss that year was to a nationally ranked kid from Illinois and it was a one point match. Holy cow....seeing some other names and their seeds is amazing. Indiana has churned out some solid talent. This would be fun to watch!
