  1. This year's state meet was great, as always - but, what is your favorite state finals and why? For me, it was probably Chad Red's senior season. The electricity in the air for that Lee/Red match was one of the coolest things I've experienced in the sport. Last year the most fun was the third-place heavyweight match.

  2. Thank you for those kind words about Jordan. I remember that match quite well and I know how bad your son felt. Jordan felt bad as well, remembering how this coach got all over him about the loss. That really shook up Jordan. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jordan has Baxter’s phone number. He probably has most of these wrestlers phone numbers. Jordan loves all his wrestling brothers. He is truly having fun.

  5. My son was lucky (or unlucky) enough to wrestle Jordan Friday night at State in 2016. I thought he had a really good shot at beating Jordan and I was right. He may be the only wrestler to outscore Jordan two takedowns to none in a high school match and still lose. I knew then Jordan was a special wrestler and he proved it to the rest of the State of Indiana this year. One surreal moment I had last weekend was watching him congratulate a wrestler from another school who had just won his Saturday morning match, all the while Jordan was on deck for his match against Kasper McCintosh! My son Baxter wants a rematch Jordan! But from the Jordan from Friday night in 2016; NOT the Jordan from last Friday. You truly climbed to the top of a very steep mountain this year and I look forward to watching you next year!

  12. What about a Getting to Know article/interview every so often? Find a random school, wrestler, coach, assistant and just ask to interview them? Whether it's video content or even an article, it might help their program get a little more recognition. I mean the people that frequent the board have an idea of what coaches are doing and how some of the top talent is doing, but what about some of the smaller schools or guys that seem to fly under the radar. Or even some video content of Team Indiana practices, road trips and tournaments, similar to that of what FloWrestling use to do. Always fun watching those.

  14. By JEREMY HINES thehines7@gmail.com It was the moment Cathedral’s Jordan Slivka had dreamed about his whole life. He was about to wrestle under the lights at Banker’s Life Fieldhouse with a weight-class and the team state championship on the line. “Earlier in the day I had told my coaches that I knew it was going to come down to me,” Slivka said. “I just had that feeling. That’s not a dig on my teammates, but I just knew it was going to come down to me. That’s what I wanted. If there was anyone in the state that I would want in that position, I’d choose me.” Slivka battled for six minutes with Yorktown’s undefeated senior Christian Hunt. In the end, Slivka emerged victorious in the narrowest of margins - a 1-0 victory. That win gave Slivka his first state title and also clinched the championship for Cathedral. The Irish outscored the field with a total of 108 points. Brownsburg finished with 100.5 followed by Columbus East with 98.5. “We knew the score and we knew Brownsburg had two big guns left,” Cathedral coach Sean McGinley said. “Slivka told me not to worry about it, he was going to take care of it. He said he’s going to get it done. He’s one of the most mentally tough kids I know, and at the end he pulled it out.” The Irish sent 10 wrestlers to the state meet. On Friday night, seven of those 10 won their match to guarantee a top eight finish. “I said at the beginning that our goal was to win a state championship,” McGinley said. “The only way we were going to win was by committee. We did. We brought 10 to the finals and then had a great Friday night. We had seven place winners. We battled and we won the close ones. We pulled a lot out in the last seconds and ended up on top.” In the tournament Cathedral won seven matches by two points or less. Perhaps the most pivotal match of the tournament came at 138 pounds when Cathedral’s Zach Melloh took on Brownsburg’s Blake Mulkey. The match went to the ultimate tie breaker, after a controversial stalling call on Mulkey. Melloh eventually won the match 3-2. “That was two teams going at it right there,” McGinley said. “The thing about Zach Melloh, he’s always going to give us six minutes no matter what. He pushes the pace. Sometimes you are going to get a call, and sometimes you don’t. We got the call in this one and took advantage of it and scored when we needed to.” Cathedral had four wrestlers reach the final. Alex Mosconi (132 pounds), Mellow (138) and Elliott Rodgers (152) all earned runner-up finishes. Slivka was the Irish’s lone champ. Cathedral also got a third-place finish out of 106-pounder Logan Bailey and a fourth by Lukasz Walendzak (120). Jacob Obst (285) finished seventh. Caleb Oliver (113), Andrew Wilson (126) and Anthony Mosconi (160) lost in their respective Friday night matches. “All year we knew we had a group of kids that are really tough to beat,” McGinley said. “We knew we would have our hands full in the finals. The guys we were taking on were all very quality guys and great wrestlers. We were able to pull one out, but for us, it was all about committee. Everyone scored points for us when we needed them.” Another key to Cathedral’s success, according to Slivka, was the team’s swagger. “My motto is ‘Learn to love it’,” Slivka said. “You have to have fun in this sport or you’ll start to hate it. That was really the main key. We went out there and had fun all day. We were confident and we had swagger. I’m not sure coach cared for it too much, but it kept us relaxed and ready to get the job done.” The title was Cathedral’s second in wrestling. The Irish also won the team title in 2014. Next season seven of the 10 state qualifiers will return. Only Melloh, Anthony Mosconi and Obst are seniors. View full article

I wouldn't be so sure that Rumph doesn't win his match. He beat Black once last year, but the last 6 weeks he has been on a roll! I am also fully biased, and I am not afraid to say that. But I still think Senior Black vs. Senior Rumph would be a real fun one to watch and think Rumph takes the match. Again, a Portage coach and obviously this is theoretical at this point.

  20. Ive been to the Ohio finals a few times. And yes, it has class wrestling. But if I remember correct, they put on a show. Spotlights and good announcer, and the Schottenstein center is pretty nice. I had to scalp tickets to get into the finals, as it was about 10 years ago I went. Its a good scene, and Columbus rivals downtown Indiana for restaurants. Also, the "Arnold Classic" is going on at the same time at the Columbus convention center. And the Arnold Classic is cool. Columbus is buzzing that weekend. Columbus was so busy that weekend, I had to drive to Springfield, OH to get a hotel room.

Gelen plays football as well at Purdue. He never dedicated his full time into collegiate wrestling. He didn’t wrestle a lot of offseason in high school. He was too busy winning State in track. You could look at it any way you wanted. It’s only opinion. It’s always amazed me when someone says, “ He relies on his athleticism.” Every athlete relies on their athleticism. You don’t win 2 State titles without being a technician. It’s a slap in the face to not only Gelen, but to his opponents to say otherwise. I’ll take G-Rob.

I've been told that he doesn't plan on playing football. Now I'm sure that could always change. Regardless he weighed 218-219 most matches, I've been told his natural weight during football was 230 but all weight loss to 220 was pretty natural. In High school Parris has never cut weight. He may have in middle school but that I can't confirm. A lot will depend what the coaches want. My understanding is he was recruited to wrestle 285 for Michigan so I assume thats the plan. I'm sure he can easily come to campus around 240+ he's a hard worker so I'm sure he'll go what ever weight is best for him.

  28. I'm pretty sure this was 2002 so sectionals would have been only 2 matches... I believe they went to team regionals if they made the finals that would be 2 more, 3 for regionals, and 3 for semi state. That would be 10-0 going into Friday night.

Beating Mappes in the finals two weeks in a row 3-2 then 9-6. Congats to Columbus East as a whole. They have always been a good program but really elevated to an elite level this year.

  45. Freshman year Friday night at state, he got taken down by future state champ Kleimola pretty quickly, before turning it on for an 18-5 win. Also, I’m sure a lot of people forget how close Gage Garpow was to beating him in the third place match. Garpow took him down a time or two and even put him on his back. Parris was down 10-6 and hit a 5-Point Peterson in the waning seconds.

  46. By STEVE KRAH stvkrh905@gmail.com When Trent McCormick became head wrestling coach at Yorktown High School, he was a teenager leading teenagers. Over the decades, McCormick turned the Tigers into a mat powerhouse. In his 30 seasons, Yorktown sent many wrestlers to the State Finals in Indianapolis. Fifty-nine times, they headed back to Delaware County as state placers. Six times, they were state champions — Ross Janey (285 in 2010), Devon Jackson (138 in 2012), Rhett Hiestand (160 in 2014), Brad Laughlin (160 in 2017), Brayden Curtis (106 in 2017 and 113 in 2018). McCormick, 50, has announced his retirement and he steps away as the leader of the program with a memorable last go-round at the State Finals. “We were a small team this year,” said McCormick Saturday, Feb. 17 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. “There were a lot of studs on the team. We always like to say, ‘Steel sharpens steel.’ It’s been a long, grueling season and to have four state placers and six state qualifiers, I was very proud of them.” McCormick, a state champion at 185 for Delta in 1986 and an Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Famer, took his boys back to the State Finals after winning the 22nd sectional, 13th regional and eighth semistate of his career. At Indy, junior Brayden Curtis (40-0) bested New Castle junior Andrew Black 6-0 in the finals to become a two-time state champion on McCormick’s watch. “He knows how to plan and he knows how to coach us mentally and physically,” said Curtis of McCormick. “He’s a huge part of my success as well as (assistant) coach (Kenny) O’Brien.” Senior Christian Hunt (48-1) concluded his Yorktown career as a state runner-up at 145. “It was a great honor to go out and represent my school,” said Hunt. “I definitely wanted to come out with a first, but second isn’t too bad.” “As a senior, I wanted to send Coach McCormick out on a positive note,” said McCormick. “I did absolutely the best I could.” Senior Alex Barr (48-3) placed sixth at 132. Senior Zach Todd (42-8) came in seventh at 106. State qualifiers were junior Eric Hiestand (42-4) at 152 and sophomore Holden Parsons (39-6) at 285. The Tigers finished seventh in the team standings. During McCormick’s run, Yorktown has been state runner-up twice and won four team state duals championships. A lay coach for 18 years who transitioned into teaching and has been in the classroom for the past 12, McCormick said he plans to spend more time with loved ones. He also plans to travel and that means going to West Point, N.Y., to see son Cael McCormick wrestle for Army. Cael was a three-time state medalist at Yorktown. “I’m going to spend some more time with the family and not so much time in the gymnasium,” said McCormick. View full article

Dear 138 pound weight class at state finals, Congrats to all of you, lots of fierce competitors, and you should all be proud! Wrestling is the ultimate teacher of life lessons, so learn what you can from your experience! Kris Rumph You are a great wrestler and competitor and your interview showed some great character. You have overcome a lot in life and I hope you understand that your wrestling achievements can transfer to anything you chose to pursue in life. The Melloh family will look forward to seeing good things for you in the future, and will say a special prayer for Kris Rumph today at church. Looking forward to rooting for you, not against you! Blake Mulkey You are an awesome wrestler. Blake, you have a great wrestling future, and we wish you the best. Sometimes things don’t go your way, it will make you stronger if you let it. Dawson Combest We wish you the best at Uindy. It truly seems like yesterday that you and Zach were battling it out for ISWA state finals. I miss those days already. Uindy is getting a good one and we know you will do great in wrestling and school. Count your blessings son, you have an awesome support group with Columbus East wrestling family! That’s a good group! I will always hold Coach Trapp in high regard..... I saw how much he did for you guys with the youth program. What a great guy and mentor! Lastly, to my son, Zach Melloh With tears of pride, I want to tell you that I love you and I am so proud of you. My sadness only comes from knowing this chapter is over. I didn’t appreciate the ride like I should have while I was living it.......through wrestling, you have helped us grow as a family and expand our faith. So few people know what you have been through to get to where you were yesterday. But God does and your family does, and we are proud to call you our son and your siblings are proud of their brother. Part of trying to live a Christ centered life means that sometimes the target on your back gets bigger. It’s ok, keep fighting the good fight. Keep grinding and doing the right things in life. With a heart full of pride for the young man you have become, looking forward to the next chapter. Your biggest fan club, Dad, Mom, Corinne, Alex, and Cecelia (Nick Melloh)

  48. Here are a few things that impressed me today and a few that didn’t. Impressive 1.Asa Garcia wrestled like a man on a mission. The way he handled Smiley and Mills was awesome. 2. Rumph’s takedown game. He was fast, strong, and was scoring points with ease. The way he scored on Lee and Melloh...wow. 3. Rader, not sure if it was the way he went after it in the final or his mustache. 4. Fattore-the way he handled the controversy, with class. 5. The beard game in the Avon and Wabash corner was strong! 6. I hate to admit it, but Cathedral wrestled lights out all tournament series. Not impressive (not in any order) 1. Fair’s singlet, sorry but I like the Perry blue 2. Tonte’s shoes, I thought Krulik was killing something? 3. I had Mulkey winning it all, but I was not impressed with the way he wrestled. I wished he would have been more aggressive. 4. Little Rooks. I also had him winning, but he just didn’t let it go. That four point stance I think hurts him more than helps. 5. The lack of breakfast food offered to all of us early risers at Bankers life. 6. We didn’t get a Mongolian protest. When Snyder took off the tie I thought it was coming

  49. Question 10 id like to see the rule be something like "weigh anywhere in that weight class or above" but can't go down to the next weight class until your decent plan allows. Example: a kid that wrestled 113 but can not weight below 112.1....every time he weighs 112.0 or less it is non-qualifying - all this kid did was wake up in the morning weighing less or peed, or whatever - but he obviously isn't trying to go 106 that day....and possibly maybe ever - but he keeps missing weight. Id love to see the "calculator/spreadsheet" take real world into account that pizza eating/fluctuating teenagers sometimes just weight less and sometimes weigh more without cutting weight. As long as they are withing their weight class Id like to see it count......just no dropping to the next weight until the plan allowed.
