Well if there was any hope of having a middle school ranking tab it is gone now that JMILL supports it. #kissofdeath

    3x middle school champ

I have said it here before, but his wrestling career took off after he helped the Brownsburg 6u Elementary Team win a state championship as a wildcard along with Koontz. Before that higher level coaching from @Fabio Jr. and team leadership and general guidance from yours truly (drove jesse to venue in morning so @Sig40 could sleep in) they were both less than average at best (hahaha). You are welcome guys for the jump start to what is likely great things for both Studs !!!! LOL !!!! (#)) TheCounty #PainTrain

  6. One could have wrestlebacks after the quarterfinals, only. If you're a regional #4 drawing the top #1 in the state in round one of semistate, to have been the #4 coming out of regionals, you will have had to have lost twice at Regionals. There are at least 3 ahead of you, and then someone outside your regional is the "ringer" death draw. So that wrestler does not have a case, really, to claim to be one of the best 4 at semi-state. But, those who lose in round 2--the current "ticket" round, they easily could be a top 5 wrestler in the state, lose to a top 3 wrestler in regionals, and then draw the number 1 in the state in the ticket round. I have literally watched the number 3 in a given class go down to the number 1 in regionals, and draw the number 2 in the ticket round and be out of state. THIS is the problem that the wrestlebacks are intended to solve, NOT taking away the upsets, which will always happen, it seems completely disingenuous to say "well then they weren't the best on this particular day", while the left out top 5 wrestler watches someone they've beaten 3 times this year in the grand march reveling in the whole pageantry that is "State". The IHSAA seems not to understand what "Going to State" is to a wrestler. It is a defining moment...a lifetime of work...and this is what COULD be corrected if we had an open mind. So I say, wrestlebacks after round 2, but NOT after round 1. As for time, I agree that is a concern. I'm not sure how all the semi-states look, but at New Castle we spend every year at LEAST one hour in "breaks". This year we had 3, totaling about 90 minutes or so. The New Castle "breaks" are becoming legendary. That is easily enough time to put in a single wrestle back round.

  7. Not sure much can top the Peele family response awesome to see Brocks family support and defend both kids. When I first saw Brocks response to his victory I didn't really know what to think, I'm a Brickie to my core but instantly I remebered the class Brock showed in losses to Triana at sectionals and regionals, I also thought he deserves to celebrate such a big win. See the region is really a big family we really stick together rivals at times for sure but at the end of the day 2 great kids going to the state finals hopefully to met again in the finals its Great! Anyone would have reacted after that win hats off to Peele and Triana for being class acts all year.

  12. As some of you may know, a family from Castle lost their home this week. CUSAWC is going to host Double HL (Humpday Head Lock) Camp on Wednesday, Feb 21st from 6:45-8:15 at CHS (enter door 21). We will have celebrity coaches showing the greatest headlocks known to mankind. . We are asking for a $20 donation for attending camp, but this is not mandatory. We’d love to have a room full of guys to battle, raise some money for a wrestling family, and have a good time. Please email me if you have any questions: Doug Welch Doug.welch@carmelusawrestling.org

    Best Weight Ever?

I think what makes this year stand out so much is that all of these wrestlers accomplishments have already happened. In some prior years, you can say there were so many total state champs, but that would come later in their careers. 126 this year already has 3 state titles, as well as more runnerups, semifinalists and other accolades.

  20. Cool stuff...The only out of state team we ever wrestled at new Castle was at the Cathedral super 6 where we wrestled Kentucky's St. X...Us and Cathedral would thump them pretty good every time but they were solid and always had state placers on their team...I got beat by 4xer Isaac Knable that went onto start at IU..I love seeing these numbers but wish the travel restrictions were different.. heaven forbid we get to go have a little fun on somebody else's turf.

  22. I hope this group who are looking into it will improve the experience. Change the Venue, full mats, move the date of MS state closer to the date of Council Bluff Iowa, have a qualifier 50 plus kids in a bracket to be complete in one day is not good for any wrestlers, scratch weigh ins, seeding should never be trackwrestling. The weighin card was an improvement. Good luck to those who will be wrestling in this event in the future.

  24. I love the drama of the ticket round, it is very intense and a great thing to watch. The season is on the line and you have 6 minutes to move on and punch a ticket or you go home. It is a wonderful thing for sure. At the same time everybody knows that getting a great draw is part of why some kids advance. Example John Doe, who may very well be easily one of the best 8 kids in the state, drew the state champ in the ticket round so his season is over. It does not discredit any other kids win, just helps to ensure the best 16 get to state. Parris is one of those all-time great Indiana wrestlers, but somebody had to draw him in the ticket round. Same with Lee and the list goes on. We have great wrestling in this state, but it can always be improved upon. I am not saying I am in favor of either, just can see both sides of the argument.

    Worst draw

Great point Jeremy. It aligns with Silas and I's philosophy to a "T". Being fairly new to the sport of wrestling compared to many on this site (7yrs). I would grow a little more perturbed every year as I would hear parents/coaches/wrestlers complaining about draws, or hoping they had an easy road through. I can tell you this......that was rarely an issue with the Doah coaches. Slivka, Gary Jr & Sr each had a "bring it on mentality". Being cut from that similar cloth, is a major factor of our growing so close off the mat as well. I'll only add that Coach Barbosa has carried on that same approach. It comes natural for him being from the south side of Muncie. ? Assistant Coach Walker is no different. The Allred outlook is simple......Those who worry about the draw are entertaining fear & self doubt. Hoping for an easy path is reserved for individuals whose bartering for podium spots. Not for those whose goal is its peak. Cressel & Walton are both very deserving of all the recognition and success they've worked so hard for. They're well coached and their college commitments speak for themselves. However.....these are matches we've wanted all season. But we'll focus on beating Moore Friday night first. Bottom line......We love the draw. Awesome opportunity to make a LOUD statement! And they'll be dealing with a hungry youngster whose well prepared, well studied, unafraid to lose.....and wrestling free with no pressure. The best 182lb'er in the State will stand on top of the podium this weekend regardless of their bracket pairings. And it could be any 1 of 16 young men in the bracket. We genuinely wish everyone competing a great week of practice, continued good health and to just enjoy the moment. Go to war, have fun and score points. Never lose sight of how much of a blessing it is to be there.

  26. Man I hope so! As his dad, I know my son would never lose if “karma” was an actual thing! Lol! Did he overreact? Yeah, maybe. He also immediately felt regret and without prompting took it upon himself (remember a 16 year old kid) to go speak to Hobart’s coaches, Tylor, Tylor’s parents, our coaches, his teammates, his family, and others. You need to remember that Tylor (AWESOME KID AND FAMILY!) and Brock have been very good friends, teammates and wrestling partners for years at RWA. Brock was extremely excited to win against someone he has so much respect for. My son...no I’m sorry....my CHILDREN have been raised to be respectful and humble, and both are. I couldn’t be prouder of Brock, the man he is becoming, the student he is, the friend he is, the brother he is, the teammate he is, and the fact that wrestler doesn’t even come close to the top of the list of great things he is! He also would like it pointed out he squished a bug off his shoulder, not a “cigarette” lol! Man I also really hope your “karma” comes back twice as hard on him this week! Thanks for the motivation too! Love the Peele Family!

  28. Everyone arguing for wrestlebacks understands the 'beat the guy on the mat with you' concept. Wrestlebacks don't change that, they simply eliminate the 'luck of the draw' from the equation. If a wrestler is truly worthy, he will beat the guy on the mat with him in wrestlebacks. Furthermore as someone stated last week, wrestlebacks aren't needed to protect against upsets. Upsets happen every year & would continue to happen with wrestlebacks. They're needed to eliminate the luck of the draw. Lastly, I hate the idea of seeding the SS's. Way to subjective & as we witnessed yesterday, the rankings are often not accurate.

  29. The talk of this year’s state finals is the depth of the 126 lb. weight class. We’re all expecting some wild results and it could POSSIBLY be the best weight ever, but that’s subjective. It has sparked a discussion in my friend group on what is the best weight ever in Indiana. Here are our results: 2009 103 (Note: 9 state titles & 3 runner-up finishes) 2011 112 (Note: LeCount, eventual 2x State Champ didn’t even qualify) 2012 126 (Note: Featured Nick Crume, Cody LeCount, Kyle Ayersman, and Cody Phillips) 2013 106 (Note: Five state champions in this weight in Red, Hildebrandt, Pepple, Lee, and Smith) 2013 285 (Note: Three Fargo AAs in Bernard, Streck, and Winfield, four nationally ranked wrestlers total with Hemmelgarn) 2014 106 (Note: Colton Cummings didn’t place at this weight) 2014 220 (Note: Four nationally ranked and undefeated champs from each semi-state, two of which were Fargo AAs) 2014 285 (Note: Four nationally ranked heavies in the fray with two as Fargo AAs) 2015 120 (Note: State Champs Brendan Black and Jeremiah Reitz were eliminated Friday night) 2015 285 (Note: Three nationally ranked heavies) 2016 220 (Note: Four undefeated nationally ranked semi-state champs were in the fray.)

    Mappes vs South?

First off I am in no way trying to bash the evansville officials but I do think that there was a lack of stall/fleeing the mat calls. I seen quite a bit of stalling with no calls and guys who basically ran off the mat and no call. I also seen a lot of inconsistency among calls one in particular was the Mappes vs south match, Mappes looked to have a take down before they went out of bounds but was called no take down later in the match the same Scenario happened at almost the same exact spot and south was awarded the takedown. I am not a official and I know it is not a easy job. Us as spectators see a lot more in the stands then they can see on the mat. I’m just curious on everyone’s thoughts on that call and the lack of no calls?

  38. The Western and Northwestern Ohio teams aren't real quality programs either. Which may show why our records seemed so much better.

  39. Is it just me, or do some of those questions make absolutely no sense. Why in the world would any want different weights for sub-varsity wrestling or want different weights for duals than individual tournaments?

    Mappes vs South?

Well as a fan, there is no doubt in my mind that every time a guy loses that I'm cheering for, it's definitely because the officiating was horrible!!!!!

  41. The best 16 will NEVER get there even with wrestle-backs. There are some areas loaded at certain weights and very talented kids will always be left at home. Wrestle-backs just make it so we get closer to "perfect."

  42. Without wrestlebacks, state will never have the best 16. It happens every year in every weight

    Worst draw

Division II does their national tournament the same way we do our state tournament. Best 2 (or 3 or 4) guys could be on the same side. They don’t talk or complain about it being seeded.

    Mappes vs South?

Here is what I think...... This past weekend matches are over and they don't matter anymore...... Next weekend is a new season..... Everyone is 0-0 and the guys that go 4-0 this upcoming weekend will be state champs!!!!! Good luck to all wrestlers...... Have a good week of practice...... Leave everything on the mat!!!!!

    Great wrestler

Same thing goes for Dante Colza of Hobart, State qualifier last year Dante finished his season 32-4 and his career 115-25 on Saturday He left everything on the mat and has a ton to be proud about. Dante won his regional and drew Lemley in the ticket round, ended up losing 1-0. Dante shook hands and walked off the mat like a true sport. Dante was a State qualifier 2x SSQ Sectional champ Regional champ 3x Al Smith Placer Lake co champ 3x Hobart invite champ Nuway National champ ETC......

    Worst draw

The only thing that is seeded in some manner is sectionals. Regionals goes totally off of placement. Semistate is blind draws based on your placement just like State.

  47. Coming from the opposing corner of that celebration, Yeah it was a little much seeing as how 2 weeks in a row Tylor Triana did not celebrate once in that manor. I do not think that a ULC was necessary. Brock did apologize to me for his actions and bottom line Brock is a great kid. I wish Brock luck at state and hopefully we can have that match again under the lights.

  49. This I can respect. It is why at this point, you won't see me mention any particular weight at any particular SS.

  50. I have been an advocate for wrestlebacks and think the discussion needs to happen and keep pushing the coaches association to fight for wrestlebacks. However, I think the discussion should happen at a later time. Saying this guy should be at state and this guy shouldn’t because of the system in place is disrespectful to the guys that did what was necessary to advance.
