The lower-level of North’s gym is not of an optimal angle for viewing wrestling. To worsen the matter, table help and folks milling around interrupt the view. If you go the upper tier, there is still vision obstruction and you are VERY far away from the action. Castle’s gym is far superior; there are no bad seats. The table help struggled during the first round, but worked out the kinks as the day progressed. I’m not sure what was up with the loooooong break at the end of the first round. BTW- If you are at the end of your life, I suppose listening to U2 ballads and “Something in the Air” by Phil Collins is good to listen to while you are waiting for the morphine to kick in. To keep the adrenaline pumping for a high stakes wrestling match—not so much. Down a flight of stairs, across the gym, down another flight of stairs and a 2-minute walk and you are in the restroom! Check that, you are not! You are in a line to use a restroom that was overwhelmed, filthy and smelled as if Satan had died there. I have been to Castle for many, many tournaments. Never have I waited in line, nor were the facilities in disrepair. The only saving grace was the North volunteers. All of the folks I encountered were friendly and there to help. Weighing all factors, North is a pale comparison to a Castle-hosted event. Castle gets an “A”; North gets a “D+”. Thank you, IHSAA, for diminishing our regional.

Living in Florida, Denver, back in Florida & grad school full time leaves little time for me to keep up on all the Berry Bowl knowledge I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss it!! Always rooting for my Vikings and after this weekend anyone from Logan Hope to see some Logan boys at the bank in a few weeks! Just booked a plane ticket home for state weekend! Speaking solely from a 1A selfish standpoint. If wrestling became classed......I'd likely transfer my son to a larger school. Because in my opinion.....without a "Tournament of Champions", most of the time kids from the larger schools would be perceived as better. Yes......I realize national accolades would separate a wrestlers worth to recruiters. However....I personally feel a 1 class system is one of the beauties of this sport here at home. In regards to a wrestler becoming more successful......they simply need to have the hunger & drive to accomplish those things. My personal feeling......is that there is no difference between a kid at a small school vs a kid at a larger school in regards to becoming "elite". You have the same opportunities at open rooms, club training, ISWA events, national events, etc. Ultimately it's a choice. How hard is a kid willing to work on & off the mat at ALL the attributes that define a great athlete.....and not just someone whose athletic. Now, becoming "good" is a different story. Having better practice partners in season, larger room (more partners), wrestling a tougher schedule, etc., will all play a factor in kids who primarily wrestle from Nov to Jan/Feb. in distancing themselves from peers at smaller programs. But that's a much different animal than truly pursuing future wrestling goals. Ill be the first to admit I don't have all the answers. And I'm sure it could possibly help grow the sport some on a lower level. But I'm fairly confident that "classing" things would create an influx of your better wrestlers (including youth) beginning to gravitate more towards larger programs. Again....this is just my perspective on one facet of "class wrestling". I understand that there are other angles that I've not spoken on. But ultimately.....this is an individual sport within a team concept. So weakening competition so more kids can be successful who aren't putting in the work.....seems counter-productive to everything this sport stands for. Of which....is a major reason an old baseball guy like me has fallen in love with it. No excuses....and nobody to blame but the man in the mirror.

I thought although he lost, Penn State 125 set the tone with early takedown and lead on Tomasello. That got the crowd electrified and that carried throughout the dual. Disappointing match for Lee, but Mackenna is a solid experienced guy and he just stayed solid, not allowing Nick to get in any wild scrambles or big moves Nickal getting that extra point with a major decision in the last few seconds set up the chance, and Cassar just wrestled out if his mind with the win over #1 Moore If anyone still doubted Cael’s coaching ability saying anyone could win with his lineup - I think tonight’s win with Nolf out and nearly the whole lineup stepping up it highlighted that he has everyone on the squad believing they can win any match

You are correct it is a long shot, but it is also a long shot to be an olympic gymnast, to be in the movies, to have a recording contract or to be President, etc. Are we not suppose to support our kids dreams? Shouldn't we give them every opportunity to pursue that dream? Specializing in wrestling is not killing the sport, it is really a dress rehearsal for life, if you want something bad enough than go get it and don't let others tell you otherwise. If a kid is not reaching their goals because they are losing to year around wrestlers than either change your goals or get better just like life.

In the brief interaction I've had with the Champ, I've always noticed a few things about him. 1) always smiling 2) very humble and courteous 3) surrounded by people but still has time to acknowledge you class act and wish him nothing but the best

I believe Curtis was a strong favorite till the second half of the season. Now I just believe he is a normal favorite.This had nothing to do with him not being great or wrestling great. And since I didn't see the match with Andrew Black that he won 6-4, I can't really say if he had a safe and not much danger in losing and just giving up a meaningless last few seconds reversal or something kinda 6-4 match or the kind of match that if a call or 2 goes against him next time or if Black coulda just finished any one of them questionable takedowns that he didn't get the call 6-4 kinda match. So I can still say just because the score was close doesn't mean he can't still be "strongly favored" but what can make me think of why I don't believe he is "strongly favored" anymore is because of one reason and one reason only.I have been around this sport for a very long time and I have seen some incredible things but what I witnessed on January 20th, 2018 at the Garry Burkhart Invitational in Hobart, you almost HAD to see it to believe it.I never really heard anything about why or what reason Andres Moreno decided to bump up a weight class(even tho he was given an extra 2 pound weight allowance). I would love to hear the reason why and maybe Coach Vega can tell us. After looking at the brackets I believe he had to do it just for the competition. He coulda just wrestled his weight class and more than likely in my opinion at least majored the Mishawaka wrestler that won 113(no disrespect).Andres Moreno decided he wanted to move up to a higher weight class to have 2 of the top 5 120 pound wrestlers in the state of Indiana in his bracket Tyler Triana who placed 3rd in the state last year and Brock Peele who placed 4th last year. What makes this even more impressive to me is the the fact that Moreno was still undefeated and was not afraid to put his Undefeated streak on the line against the best of the best even if it was in a weight class above his. He met Brock Peele in the Semi-finals. He had an amazing match with Peele. Moreno ended up beating Peele in overtime 11-9 to advance to the finals to wrestle Tyler Triana of Hobart at his home school.Triana is one of the favorites to win the 120 pound weight class this year.I believe Moreno just cracked the top 10 rankings at 113.It was another unbelievable match. They had some amazing scrambles.Moreno ended up in another very close match.He edged out Triana 8-6 to complete one of the most amazing performances in recent history and to also keep his record unblemished.Moreno made me a 100℅ believer that day. If he can wrestle up a weight class and not only hang with, but beat 2 of the best wrestlers Indiana has to offer right now, then their is no way you can tell me that Brayden Curtis should be a lock.I wonder how many think that Brayden Curtis would even beat Tyler Triana or Brock Peele? Good luck everyone. This is going to be one of the best Weeks of Wrestling in history..

I see us getting a 6#er through, McCartney, Hickman has a shot. Gonna be wild to see how we draw out on the 120 weight class. The loser of this weight could get the better draw. 106: I see this weight holding out with few surprises. State qualifier Flores and sophomore Boots have had solid seasons and should be a fit for anyone at the semi state. Give me the sectional champs in the finals, and the runner-ups going for third. Fernando Flores(GO), Jett Boots(AN), Christian Pfeiffer-Laguerre(CO), Jake Hull(FR) 1st Round Match to Watch: Jake Hull vs. Sean Johnson(EC) 113: Aside from sectional champion Weimer, expect the Elkhart sectional to roll through this. All the other qualifiers out of Westview have negative records. Weimer is the clear favorite but can’t overlook Puckett from Northridge who has put together a solid freshman season at 31-3. Isaac Weimer(WN), Justin Puckett(NR), Rasheek Bonds(GO), Eric Garcia(EC) 1st Round Match to Watch: Eric Garcia vs. Evan Phillpot(PH) 120: State runner-up Hunter Watts shouldn’t have any issue here, with Beasley a distant second, from both first and third. The other two spots are totally up for grabs, with Walters having a legitimate 4-over-1 possibility over Clay after injury defaulting his third place match. Schoeff gets tested early with Miller, and then likely Rodriguez, who just controlled Whitman at sectionals. Whitman gets to square off with Hoyer in the first round. Give me both of the sectional 3s to win their matches. Matt Gimson(JT), Adam Ledesma(EN), Adam Hooley(NR), Zeke Rowden(PH) 1st Round Match to Watch: Adam Hooley vs. Zach Burrell(AN) 138: We gots a doozy of a weight class here with five semi-state qualifiers; and two of those with state experience. All four from the Westview sectional have been battle-tested this year and are capable of causing fits for most of this semi-state. Tanner Stacy and Jadon Miller best be ready early, as Gimson and Goering await them in the first round. Gimson looks to avenge what was his first loss of last year against Moore in the championship. Conner Gimson(JT), Austin Moore(CN), Bryton Goering(EM), Ryan Rasler(PH) 1st Round Match to Watch: Bryton Goering vs. Jadon Miller(LL) 145: Kunkel is the favorite here, making an immediate impact in the semi-state as soon as he made 145, majoring his likely finals opponent in Eveler. The most interesting looking match looks to be a first rounder between two seniors who both made it out of regionals last year and would certainly like to end their career doing the same. Giran Kunkel(CN), Owen Eveler(NR), Jayce Meyer(AN), Jake Chupp(NW) 1st Round Match to Watch: Jake Chupp vs. Rhett Evans(FR) 152: The finals will likely be a rematch between Stroud and Levitz, who upset Stroud at the Al Smith with a spladle and a pin. Stroud will be looking for vengeance, but Levitz always comes prepared. The other qualifiers are a coin flip, but I’ll give the slight edge to both of the Elkhart sectional boys. Xander Stroud(EC), Isaiah Levitz(PH), Julius Graber(NR), Koby Lundy(EM) 1st Round Match to Watch: Koby Lundy vs. Marcus Yoder(WV) 160: One of the least star-studded weight classes, but at least that makes it one of the lesser predictable ones at the same time. Jadon Crisp should navigate this bracket with little issue while 2-4 are quite a bit less obvious. Norment finally broke through and won his sectional, but Johnson is a tough 4 that could absolutely pull out the ‘upset.’ Don’t totally count on a Westview sweep, but don’t be surprised if it happens either. Jadon Crisp(CN), John Lanam(AN), Tyler Norment(JT), Azael Acosta(CO) 1st Round Match to Watch: Tyler Norment vs. Bennett Johnson(PH) 170: The finals are likely to feature an Al Smith rematch between Lone and Levitz, where Lone surprised with a major decision. Lone has been red-hot this season, but it would be foolish to count out a member of the always-dangerous Levitz family. The 3rd place match should feature Cade Freel, who would be facing the winner of a toss-up freshman/senior battle in the first round. Jake Lone(NW), Jed Levitz(PH), Cade Freel(NR), Tadd Owen(CN) 1st Round Match to Watch: Tadd Owen vs. Clayton Lundy(EM) 182: Likely the most boring weight of the tournament. Barring anything huge, it’s Graber’s world and everyone else is just battling to place. And that’s not meant with disrespect, as the Westview sectional does send four tough wrestlers. Blodgett had a great day at sectionals navigating through a tough bracket, and senior Mooney will look to continue his stellar season with his first semi-state berth. Conner Graber(NR), Coye Blodgett(PH), Connor Mooney(CN), Bodey Holbrook(EN) 1st Round Match to Watch: Bodey Holbrook vs. Harold Moon(CO) 195: State placer Draven Rasler must have been sleep-walking Saturday, taking less than two minutes all day for a sectional title. Lucius should push him a bit harder in the finals, but Rasler should be the head of the class. The third and fourth spots favor the Westview sectional kids. Draven Rasler(WN), Alex Lucius(EC), Codey Shafer(PH), Brandon Bergman(LL) 1st Round Match to Watch: Codey Shafer vs. Dan Wickersham(NR) 220: This may be the toughest weight in the whole semi state, and the Goshen regional brings a few studs to compete. Leffers has been a man on a mission this year by taking out many of the top 220s in the semi state. He’ll get some stout competition out of Contreras and Miller, former teammates who just faced each other for the sectional title. Levi Leffers(CN), Caleb Miller(CO), Jordan Contreras(NR), Troy Deetz(PH) 1st Round Match to Watch: Troy Deetz vs. Omar Perez(EC) 285: Rounding out the tournament are our big boys, and the top 4 here should be very solid. The likely finals should be round three between semi-state qualifiers Conner and Yoder, who have split their first two meetings. Worlds has put himself together an impressive season while Bergman has been coming on very strong the last few weeks, most recently winning the Westview sectional.
