  1. Bad idea. I have seen a lot of quality wrestling at 106 & 113 in every region of the state. Can't say that for Hwt and 225, in fact ive observed mostly ms quality wrestling from these groups. We'd rather have David Taylor and Logan Steiber sit so we can watch large unskilled wrestlers push each other towards the out of bounds line for 3 periods? If anything eliminate 225 for another middleweight.

  2. Call me a homer..... but the whole Avon sectional is stupid good. You have a bunch of huge schools and a few studs from smaller schools (smack in the middle of a wrestling hotbed). The talent pool (total population of the schools involved) is double than many of the other sectionals. State title contenders in every weight class (multiple contenders in many classes). Gonna be tough for years.

No need for knee pads anyway. Just toss your opponents. Btw... rumor has it that Kevin Jackson (yes that Kevin Jackson) was in Avon’s room today to help them get ready for the tournament. After a day with this beast, they don’t need no stinking knee pads!

  6. There is quality wrestling at every weight. If you fail to understand or see that you do not understand the sport very well. Heavyweight and 220 are two of the hardest weights to wrestle when you look at the body type and style difference amongst the athletes competing. Look at Robert Samuels and Rickie Clark, and try to prepare to wrestle those two and every other style and body type in between.

  7. it makes total sense that the toughest sectionals and regionals are located near or around the top academies in the state. I would expect the same for up in the region and down in Evansville as well. Our kids just do not understand how good they have it with the convenience of having a Contenders or RC in their back yard. #TheCounty

And.... new pads are not cheap. For many that’s not a big deal... but for others it’s a huge deal. Just kinda hard to tell parents on a budget to get new equipment to maybe wrestle one day.

  12. The 2018 Evansville Central Sectional—long considered as one of the toughest in the State—expects to hold its form. Two of the top four PAC teams will be there, the Big 8 team champion Vincennes Lincoln Alices and SIAC champion Mater Dei Wildcats. Additionally, the field is fortified with many state-ranked wrestlers. North Posey hit a program high-water mark with its runner-up finish at the State Duals. Vincennes Lincoln boasts a loaded line-up that has rolled up an eye-popping, won-loss record. Will it be enough to topple Mater Dei from the team title? 6th-ranked Mater Dei freshman Cole Ross is a big favorite and gets the top seed at 106. North Posey’s Braiden Fitts and Central’s Destiny Garris will battle in hopes of a spot against Egli in the final. Mater Dei freshman, Blake Boarman, is the top seed at 113. One of two undefeated wrestlers in the field, Boarman is putting his 5th ranking on the line. He will likely meet the winner of the meeting of North Posey’s Kameron Kendall and Gibson Southern’s Chritian Polen. At 120, Mater Dei’s ninth-ranked Kane Egli hopes to capture his second sectional title. On the other side of the bracket, Central’s Cameron Amento should meet with Reitz’s Chris Tucker. Mater Dei’s Clay Egli puts his 5th-ranking on the line while he pursues his second sectional title. Gibson Southern’s Eric Harpeneau and Mt. Vernon’s Nate Morgan will slug it out in the bottom of the bracket. At 132, Princeton’s Luke Dunn faces the classic good news/bad news paradigm. The good news is that Dunn had a break-out performance in winning the Big8 title. The bad news is that he will likely face Mater Dei’s 5th-ranked Eli Dickens. Vincennes Lincoln’s Parker McNeely and Central’s Brayden Bethe are in contention to advance to the final. Mater Dei’s 138-pound, fifth-ranked Matt Lee is in position to collect his second sectional championship. The bottom of the bracket is wide open—look for Vincennes Lincoln’s Ashtin Russell, North’s Jacob Shanks or Reitz’s Clay Wellmeier to emerge. At 145, Mater Dei freshman Scott Fitts is the favorite. Expect to see the winner of Mt. Vernon’s Drake Ricketts and North Posey’s Austin Frymire face Fitts on the center mat. Mater Dei’s Macartney Parkinson gets the top seed at 152. North Posey’s two-seed, senior Levi Miller earned a trip to state as a freshman. In this senior year, he looks to be in form to return to Banker’s. Vincennes’ Cadon Deffendoll will challenge him in the semifinal round. 160 is so loaded, it’s hard to find a place to start! Let’s begin with the top seed, Princeton senior Chase Wilson. Wilson overcame a devastating mid-season injury and has compiled a 18-1 record. Wilson better have his shoes laced tight as he will likely face Reitz’s Zach Martin in the semis. Martin is fully capable of pulling off an upset. Mater Dei senior Nolan Weidner dominated the field at the SIAC, yet only received a three seed. Why? Because the PAC champ, Gibson Southern’s Clay Singleton, edged Weidner 2-0 at the Holiday Classic. 170 is just plain stupid. North Posey’s Colton Gamblin is the top seed, but will face a stiff semifinal challenge from Reitz’s Noah Reich. Central’s McKinley Kemper is surging; the sophomore won his first SIAC title last weekend. He will likely meet the Big8 champ, Mt. Vernon’s Luke McGennis in the semifinal. Overlook Mater Dei’s Blake Chandler and Princeton’s James Curl at your own peril…either can pull of an upset. Six very good wrestlers, but only four will advance. Central’s undefeated senior, Kiave Guerrirer, is the top dog at 182. Look for Vincennes’ Bishop Coomer and North’s Tyler Tasa to compete for the right to meet Guerrier for a shot at the title. At 195, Reitz senior Andrew Koonce has rolled up a 32-6 record to earn a number-one seed. Mater Dei senior, Robbie Helfrich, should get a third crack at Koonce for the top podium spot. 5th-ranked Michael Boots of Mater Dei gets the top seed at 220. It’s a race to a high medal for Reitz’s Luke Huggins, Princeton’s Eli Buck and Gibson Southern’s Macray Robinson. Two big names in the big boy division: Vincennes’ Spencer York and Mater Dei’s Roman Graves. York is fresh off his Big8 triumph while Graves just nabbed an SIAC title. Team- If you attend, 2018 promises to be a great year. Mater Dei coach Greg Schaefer boasts eight SIAC champs while his entire line-up placed in the top four. Vincennes is riding high from their Big 8 title where they claimed four champs and placed eight additional grappler. Central and North Posey both bring depth and balance. All nine of the schools have competitive grapplers with opportunities to advance. Regardless of the color of your jersey, Central sectional wrestling fans have cause for excitement. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, the outcome will be the same: Late Saturday afternoon, the crew from 1300 Harmony Way will raise the championship trophy for the 42nd consecutive time. The Wildcats are too strong and too deep for the string to be broken in 2018. Top Quarterfinal Matches- 113, Isaiah Kiesel Gibson Southern vs. Braden Dike Mt. Vernon; 120, Shiloh Stasi North vs. Parker Mullins Vincennes; 126- Brenton Myers North vs. Albert Spencer North Posey; 132, Tyler Wright Reitz vs. Luke Dunn Princeton; 138, Jacob Shanks North vs. Ashtin Russell Vincennes; 182 Will Schuler Mater Dei vs. Landon Hoover Gibson Southern. Best Semifinal Matches- 113, Destiny Garris Central vs. Braiden Fitts North Posey. Fitts has rolled up a very good record against strong competition. Garris is in supreme condition and wrestles very tough. This will be a fun one! 120, Cameron Amento Central vs. Chris Tucker Reitz. The pair produced one of the most entertaining matches in the SIAC when Tucker came from behind to win 12-11. I would not be surprised to see 30 points scored in this one. 132, Parker McNeely Vincennes vs. Brayden Bethe Central. McNeely is a veteran who knows how to win matches. Bethe is wild, unpredictable and capable of beating anyone on any given day. 160, Nolan Weidner Mater Dei vs. Clay Singleton Gibson Southern. Singleton beat Weidner 2-0 at the Holiday Classic. Both have stepped up their game, who will advance to the final? 170, Both sides of the bracket will be great. Best Finals Match: 152- Macartney Parkinson vs Levi Miller. The last time they met, Parkinson handed Miller an UTB loss in a match that left Viking fans disappointed. The loser of this match will likely face Castle’s Robert Deters in the semifinal of the regional, so the stakes are pretty darned high. BTW- Check out the Parkinson family’s t-shirts. Best I have ever seen. Hookemendations: *Get up early and have breakfast at the Pie Pan. After your omelet, (Hookticia prefers pancakes) have a piece of pumpkin or pecan pie...you don’t have to make weight! *If home takes you north or east, ask any Central, North or Mater Dei fan for directions to the Hornville Tavern. They have a family room and a smoked pork chop that is to D-I-E for. At the corner of 41 and I-64, you will find Stoll’s County Inn. This is the best buffet you will find and has an Amish influence. Tell ‘em Yoder sent you! If you like sushi or hibachi, Fujiyama offers the best value for Japanese cuisine in the city. It is Mrs. Hook's favorite place to eat. 16. Again I am not sure you are thinking things through. The guys you mentioned are really good however beating the likes of Streck, Boots, Hammond, McClaine, Aiken giving up 40 or more pounds is silly. That is not to mention the quality that was there last year. Larson, Pokorney, Lee, Crider, Maddox. I wouldn't get rid of 106 or 113 either but every since 220 (215) was added there has been top notch quality guys. Lets not forget the best Wrestler in the country right now wrestles at 97kg (213lbs) not 125kg.

    Sectional mis-seeding

Every year there are some questionable seeding scenarios, where will they be this year? Copying and pasting my pet peeve from last several years: Here is another complaint -- and I raise this every year -- in the sectionals with > 8 teams several of the wrestlers are put into a "one-and-done" scenario. If you are lucky enough to have a sectional with only 8 teams, then no matter what your record you are in double-elimination with a chance to wrestle back for 4th and a move to Regionals. So, if you look at the sectionals with > 8 teams they have to seed the top 6 and then the rest are random draw. However, since only 6 are seeded, that leaves 2 quarterfinal slots that are completely open. In my opinion, the unseeded wrestlers should go there to battle it out with each other. Instead, some sectionals do a complete random draw and place an unseeded wrestler against a top seed, while another unseeded wrestler lucks out and gets a bye in that empty quarterfinal slot. Mooresville coaches have done it right -- the unseeded wrestlers are always paired up on those open slots and the #1 and #2 seeds always draw a bye to the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, as an example in the Crawfordsville sectional at 182 there is unseeded Wrestler with 17-17 record who has drawn into a first round with the #2 seed. If he loses, then he is done - no chance to wrestle back for 4th. In the same bracket, a 12-23 wrestler gets a first round bye to the quarterfinals. If he loses he still has a shot at wrestling back to move on. I would like to see that 17-17 unseeded matched up against the 12-23 unseeded wrestler and give the #2 guy a bye. That way at least both of the unseeded have a better shot to battle for that #3 or #4 finish and another weekend. For some kids, that alone may make their entire season.

  26. After a quick look the common opponents criteria gets just as hairy especially because two of the wrestlers are in the same conference and wrestle MANY same opponents. It looks like that becomes another round robin there. If my calculations are correct it becomes A over C(who defeated him), B over C(who defeated him), and C over A(who defeated him). Basically, in my 15 years of coaching you go to record and one kid had about 5 or 6 less losses so he "deserves" the highest possible seed. However, not arguing that as my whole point is the seed shouldn't be determined by the head to head criteria based on seeing a kid multiple times.

  32. Taken from Winter Bulletin @Wrestling Scholar 6. Determination of seeded wrestlers is given in order of importance: Varsity contests are the only record submitted for seeding consideration. a. Head to head competition current year; (The wrestler with the most head to head wins gets the seed. If they have beaten each other an equal number of times, then the winner of the last match gets the seed. Head to head is counted at any level of interscholastic competition. Matches against teammates are not counted for seeding purposes.); b. Record against common opponents; c. Semi‐State quarterfinalist, or higher in previous year IHSAA Tournament Series; d. Win percentage. A contestant with the best overall record (winning percentage) who has wrestled at least 10 matches; For seeding purposes, forfeits should not be included in a wrestler’s record. e. Farthest advancement in previous year IHSAA State Tournament Series; f. Draw by lot. Criteria is reset after determining each seed. Criteria is reset after determining each seed NOTE: A wrestler with less than ten matches may not be seeded ahead of a wrestler with at least ten matches and a winning record unless he/she meets criteria in a, b or c. A wrestler with a losing record may not be seeded unless he/she meets criteria a, b or c unless there are less than six (6) wrestlers in the bracket.

  37. Most wins I guess is a new rule, so it punished teams that seek to not wrestle teams over and over and over and over and over again along with a few teams that are not in conferences so they don't get to beat up on the same guys multiple times.

    Middle School Weights

Our MS team has already wrestled under 3 different sets of weight since the start of the season. Plus I know we will have at least 1 more different set of weight later in the year that we haven’t encountered yet. It’s a headache for coaches especially when we hear about the weight classes just a couple days prior to the meet. Not to mention a pain for the wrestler that should be worrying about improving and not constantly fluctuating weight classes. Start at different times of the year, that’s fine doesn’t hurt anyone you face. Have slightly different equipment rules, I can live with that since it’s your guys. Have different period lengths, OK at least it’s even for both wrestlers. Keep having to change weights through the year and not get told until days prior to the meet, that’s unfair to the team if not even teaching some the bad habits of fluctuate their weight constantly to fit into that weeks new weight class. I pushed for a number of years to try to have a more universal set up weights at least in our area but some AD/coaches are stubborn in their ways and in other cases the coaches change the weights yearly to what best aids that years team. With no MS governing body it will take most teams adopt a universial weight set before enough influence will be put on those type of schools to finally conform as well.

    Sectional Seeds or not

How I read our new favorite rule is this. The forfeits count in your match total in order to be eligible for seeding. However when you are comparing wrestler A to wrestler B and it comes down to winning percentage then you take the forfeits out. Such a glorious rule, thank you IHSWCA! I surely hope we can make things even more complicated next year.I told my wife to expect me home on Wednesday and already called off work on Tuesday because I know the seeding meeting will take a lot longer this year.

    Sectional mis-seeding

Now that the brackets are out, here are a couple examples I've been able to find that illustrate this seeding issue: Avon Sectional, 182 pounds Because there are > 8 teams, if you are matched up in a rat-tail and lose you are done. Keep in mind that 6 are seeded, so that leaves 2 open slots in the quarterfinals. In my opinion, the 4 remaining wrestlers should be matched in pig-tail in those 2 open slots. This would let the non-seeded wrestlers go against each other for a chance to fight back for likely 3rd or 4th place and a spot at Regionals. However, because the remaining 4 wrestlers are random-drawn into all of the bracket spots you have this: A wrestler with a 4-20 record draws a bye in the pigtail, so even if they do lose their next match they can wrestle back for placement. Meanwhile, a senior with a 19-10 record is randomly drawn in the pigtail against another senior with a 32-6 record. One of these 2 will lose the match and their wrestling career is done -- no chance for wrestle back to move on. Twin Lakes Sectional, 160 pounds Maybe not as big of a deal but again this is about getting it right for kids to have a chance to get to one more weekend... In the pigtail round, a wrestler with a 6-4 record has to face a 13-7 wrestler with one of them going home immediately. Another wrestler with a 0-21 record draws the lucky open spot and has a bye to the next round. He will have double elimination -- one of the other two will not. There are a few others that I saw glancing through some of the sectionals with larger # of teams where it's likely that there are more than 8 wrestlers in a weight class (otherwise with forfeits they will all get to the round of 8). Coaches -- please ask for this simple change -- it makes sense, hurts nobody, doesn't add any additional time to the seeding meetings and will give some wrestlers (especially those seniors) a better chance to have an opportunity to earn their way to another weekend of high school wrestling.
