It is an hour and a half from Waterloo and Kendallville to Portland...it's probably not entirely feasible with a weeknight event.

  5. Regarding question #2, the time frame you give would not allow by the rule of 1.5% a week to achieve the desired weight. It's not a suggestion, these are the guidelines were all supposed to adhere to. In talking with several coaches around State, I think the weight management plan is extremely misunderstood. Also you are correct that if you consider bumping a guy up for a competition, you definitely have to pay attention to their weight to not get to big for their normal weight or they must work down again. Hope this helps

    New Uniforms

To the diehard wrestling people the 2 piece uniform (shirt and loose fitting shorts) may not be the look they would like to see in a wrestling match. But, to the casual wrestling fan, parent, random student that showed up to watch, the 2 piece uniform with loose fitting shorts is by far a better look. I have asked many of our new fans and all have said they like seeing the 2 piece uniform much more than the singlet. I am a diehard obviously so I have no problem with the singlet. Just giving the opinions from our casual fans.

  8. I am most likely the wrong person to make this comment given my school does benefit from this, but moving the Regional from Castle to North seems to be unpopular at least, and not well thought out over all. North's facilities are really nice, but I am not sure they will be able to handle the kind of crowds that have packed Castle's gym in the past. The hospitality and over all vibe of the Castle Regional has been among the best in the state for many years also. Something about that tradition will be lost I am afraid. I realize the IHSAA is "Spreading the Wealth" but I can't say this particular move is a really great one based on the tradition and over all drawing power of packing Castle's Gym to watch the Meat Grinder

In this sense, this change is progress. It’s progress in trying to up the participation and widening the comfort zone. Whether it’s liked or not, times are changing and in order to keep up, things such as the two-piece are introduced in order to progress our sport. Just my 2 cents

  14. Ill just put it in another perspective. Why in Indiana, does the same location always have to host the sectional or Regional? Used to live in Missouri and Kansas, and they moved it around year to year. Really wasn't a big deal. Maybe its a good idea to move it as long as a location has capacity to host it? Maybe its quite a burden on a school to host every year. Maybe move it around so teams can travel more or less, and so hometown fans might get to see it once in a while.

    Qualified Weigh-ins

Others feel free to refute this...but my experience has been as follows: For question 1: You were right IF you wanted both weigh-ins to be "QUALIFIED". If your kids had weighed in heavier at the MI meet that weigh-in would be qualified, but the next one would not. If you have extra weigh-ins in your schedule, a couple of non-qualified weigh-ins would not be a big deal (though I believe the intent of the rule would be to do what you did and have all qualified weigh-ins). For questions 2: It seems to me that this 'plan' would not really be in the spirit and intent of the 1.5% rule unless Little Johnny starts at 120 early in the season and makes his way down to 106. I also assume 106 is not below his minimum weight. However, your case of weighing in and then dropping 12.5 lbs in 2 weeks is a little different. All previous weigh-ins would be qualified. The one weigh in after the large cut would NOT be QUALIFIED and could not count as the scratch weigh-in. However, the system seems to re-set after every weigh-in. So after hitting 106 once, he could then keep weighing-in and the subsequent ones would be qualified. So it believe it is LEGAL by technical rule. Some other states have systems that give a minimum weight allowed each week from the alpha weigh-in. Then if you weigh in heavy, they re-adjust the minimum for each subsequent week. Unless there is a minimum weight for every week AND every weigh-in must be qualified, there will always be some wiggle room "legally". In the end it depends on the coach's and wrestler's philosophy.

  23. By JEREMY HINES thehines7@gmail.com There are times when things get so heated in the wrestling room at Mt. Vernon High School in Fortville that brothers Chase and Chris Wilkerson have to be seperated. Like most brothers, they hate to lose to each other. When they practice together, things can start to get a little testy. Those moments certainly aren’t the norm. Chase, a junior and Chris, a sophomore are each other’s biggest fans. They practice together, condition together and talk strategy together. When one brother is struggling, the other is there to pick him up. “They really have a neat dynamic,” Marauder coach Chad Masters said. “Every big match, they are both on the sidelines coaching each other. They are both the first one there to congratulate each other. They console each other after tough losses. They are two of the best kids I’ve ever met. They are the type of people you want in the room and you know they’ll be successful in whatever they do.” This year Chase is ranked No. 11 in the state at 120 pounds and is ranked fourth in the New Castle semistate. Chris is not state ranked, but is No. 6 in the New Castle semistate at 132 pounds. Before his last middle school season started, Chris weighed 170 pounds. He had always wrestled the bigger guys due to his size. But, when he started really focusing on improving, he started to get in better shape as well. He wrestled at 145 pounds by the end of his eighth grade season. Then, in high school, he got down to 132 pounds and he maintained that weight all summer long. This is his second season at that weight class. Last season ended in trying fashion for Chris. He was the No. 2 seed in the Warren Central sectional. He won his first two matches then ran into senior Tim Wright. During that match Wright’s head slammed into Chris’s face. The force from the blow knocked a tooth out of Chris’s mouth, and caused other damage. He had to injury default out of the tournament and go to the hospital immediately. That injury ended his freshman campaign. “That was the worst feeling in my life,” Chris said. “Just hearing that I couldn’t continue. It was the first time I had cried in years. It was awful knowing that all the hard work I had put in, and nobody was going to see that pay off.” That’s when Chase stepped in. “Chase helped me to cope with knowing I was out,” Chris said. “He was telling me to bounce back harder. He told me to work harder. And, he did the same. Seeing him work as hard as he did started pushing me to get better as well.” Chase lost to New Castle’s Trevor Ragle in the first round of semistate 4-1. Ragle went on to advance to the state tournament. Before the Ragle match, Chase had fallen short against other ranked guys as well. “This year started out the same way,” Masters said. “He wrestled Zane Standridge and lost in the last 20 seconds. He knew he could wrestle the ranked guys, but he wasn’t sure he was able to beat them. It seemed like every time something would go wrong and he’d lost the match at the end.” The turning point for Chase came 14 days after the Standridge match. Chase was wrestling a familiar foe, Greenfield’s Gavin Rose. The two were once practice partners at Mt. Vernon, but Rose left for the neighboring Greenfield school. He had defeated Wilkerson in the past, but this time was different. Chase scored four points on two reversals to beat Rose 4-2. That match showed Chase he could win the big match. “That was a big turning point with Chase,” Masters said. “It showed Chase that he could not only wrestle with these guys, he could beat them. It showed he could beat anyone.” The two wrestled again Saturday in the championship of the Hoosier Heritage Conference tournament. The match went to triple overtime before Rose pulled off the 2-0 victory. Chris also had a big match in the HHC tournament. He was taking on Yorktown’s Alex Barr, the No. 1 seed in the 132 pound weight class. With 10 seconds left in the match Barr had a 1-0 lead and was on top of Chris. That’s when Chris made his move, he scored an escape point and Barr fell toward the out of bounds line. When Chris saw Barr down, he dove at his legs and was awarded the takedown to go up 3-2 with three seconds left. On the restart he let Barr up to secure the 3-2 win. “I couldn’t contain my emotions,” Chris said. “I had to let it out. That was such a crazy match and I was just so excited to win it.” The brothers have very different styles on the mat. Chase likes to go for the takedowns and be aggressive offensively. Chris is a patient wrestler who minimizes his mistakes. Both brothers have a goal to reach the state tournament. “I definitely think I should go to state this year,” Chase said. “It’s going to be rough for sure, but I feel like I can make it.” One of the keys to getting to state might just be having a sibling to push you. It’s working for the Wilkerson brothers right now. “Having a brother is definitely an advantage,” Chase said. “You grow up beating the crap out of each other. But, whenever you need someone to work with - we are there for each other and we want each other to succeed. When he does well, I feel as good as if I had done well myself.” View full article

Best ones I have seen this year was Columbus East. I thought the fit on their shorts and shirts were ideal and looked good too. Everybody else I have seen wear the shorts I feel have been a little bit on the baggy side, but as far as functionality, there were no issues I seen during the matches. An ideal thing to do when introducing anything new however, is to reevaluate how it worked out for the year and make necessary adjustments. Crossing my fingers.

just to enlighten the rest of the board.....................someone who works 30 yrs in da mill only has 4-7 fingers left total and has inhaled lots and I mean lots of chemicals that damage the thought and reasoning section of the brain, so when he says 7 its most likely based on the # of bodies/heads he saw floating in Wolf Lake while driving home from work. He woke up confused and just thought this must be a premonition and posted his prediction. Lets not lose sight of the fact that @regionrat1 has been invited to move down to live in #TheCounty near 1 of the local trailer parks in Avon by former region stud Kyle Ayersman. So his allegiance to the North may be short lived when he finds his new digs and starts eating at Charbonno's.

    Qualified Weigh-ins

Some kids lose 5 pounds by looking at the sun. Like Joe said.... weights go up and down. The kids know when they need to be on weight. Our sport is dog eat dog. If a program was dirty a disgruntled jv parent would most likely let it be known so little Johnny could be varsity. Plus you have other coaches looking at weights every weigh-in. Bottom line is that this is a non-issue. And no!.... Asa did not cut 20 a week. I’ve been around him since very early on. Not sure what prompted him to say that??? He was heavy before last season, but got down quick and maintained. You can believe me or not. But... I’ve always shot all of you straight on this board and in person.
