Kid after taking 5th in sectionals: If only my FF's had counted in seeding I'd have made it to Regionals.

  2. By JEREMY HINES thehines7@gmail.com There are times when things get so heated in the wrestling room at Mt. Vernon High School in Fortville that brothers Chase and Chris Wilkerson have to be seperated. Like most brothers, they hate to lose to each other. When they practice together, things can start to get a little testy. Those moments certainly aren’t the norm. Chase, a junior and Chris, a sophomore are each other’s biggest fans. They practice together, condition together and talk strategy together. When one brother is struggling, the other is there to pick him up. “They really have a neat dynamic,” Marauder coach Chad Masters said. “Every big match, they are both on the sidelines coaching each other. They are both the first one there to congratulate each other. They console each other after tough losses. They are two of the best kids I’ve ever met. They are the type of people you want in the room and you know they’ll be successful in whatever they do.” This year Chase is ranked No. 11 in the state at 120 pounds and is ranked fourth in the New Castle semistate. Chris is not state ranked, but is No. 6 in the New Castle semistate at 132 pounds. Before his last middle school season started, Chris weighed 170 pounds. He had always wrestled the bigger guys due to his size. But, when he started really focusing on improving, he started to get in better shape as well. He wrestled at 145 pounds by the end of his eighth grade season. Then, in high school, he got down to 132 pounds and he maintained that weight all summer long. This is his second season at that weight class. Last season ended in trying fashion for Chris. He was the No. 2 seed in the Warren Central sectional. He won his first two matches then ran into senior Tim Wright. During that match Wright’s head slammed into Chris’s face. The force from the blow knocked a tooth out of Chris’s mouth, and caused other damage. He had to injury default out of the tournament and go to the hospital immediately. That injury ended his freshman campaign. “That was the worst feeling in my life,” Chris said. “Just hearing that I couldn’t continue. It was the first time I had cried in years. It was awful knowing that all the hard work I had put in, and nobody was going to see that pay off.” That’s when Chase stepped in. “Chase helped me to cope with knowing I was out,” Chris said. “He was telling me to bounce back harder. He told me to work harder. And, he did the same. Seeing him work as hard as he did started pushing me to get better as well.” Chase lost to New Castle’s Trevor Ragle in the first round of semistate 4-1. Ragle went on to advance to the state tournament. Before the Ragle match, Chase had fallen short against other ranked guys as well. “This year started out the same way,” Masters said. “He wrestled Zane Standridge and lost in the last 20 seconds. He knew he could wrestle the ranked guys, but he wasn’t sure he was able to beat them. It seemed like every time something would go wrong and he’d lost the match at the end.” The turning point for Chase came 14 days after the Standridge match. Chase was wrestling a familiar foe, Greenfield’s Gavin Rose. The two were once practice partners at Mt. Vernon, but Rose left for the neighboring Greenfield school. He had defeated Wilkerson in the past, but this time was different. Chase scored four points on two reversals to beat Rose 4-2. That match showed Chase he could win the big match. “That was a big turning point with Chase,” Masters said. “It showed Chase that he could not only wrestle with these guys, he could beat them. It showed he could beat anyone.” The two wrestled again Saturday in the championship of the Hoosier Heritage Conference tournament. The match went to triple overtime before Rose pulled off the 2-0 victory. Chris also had a big match in the HHC tournament. He was taking on Yorktown’s Alex Barr, the No. 1 seed in the 132 pound weight class. With 10 seconds left in the match Barr had a 1-0 lead and was on top of Chris. That’s when Chris made his move, he scored an escape point and Barr fell toward the out of bounds line. When Chris saw Barr down, he dove at his legs and was awarded the takedown to go up 3-2 with three seconds left. On the restart he let Barr up to secure the 3-2 win. “I couldn’t contain my emotions,” Chris said. “I had to let it out. That was such a crazy match and I was just so excited to win it.” The brothers have very different styles on the mat. Chase likes to go for the takedowns and be aggressive offensively. Chris is a patient wrestler who minimizes his mistakes. Both brothers have a goal to reach the state tournament. “I definitely think I should go to state this year,” Chase said. “It’s going to be rough for sure, but I feel like I can make it.” One of the keys to getting to state might just be having a sibling to push you. It’s working for the Wilkerson brothers right now. “Having a brother is definitely an advantage,” Chase said. “You grow up beating the crap out of each other. But, whenever you need someone to work with - we are there for each other and we want each other to succeed. When he does well, I feel as good as if I had done well myself.” View full article

  4. I think anyone can clearly see this has been caused by 3 errors made by IN. 1. We don't have a classed wrestling state tournament 2. We don't have wrestle-backs in regionals, SS and State 3. We've been counting FF toward winning percentage in sectional seeding Thankfully we have fixed the 3rd issue. I predict many more AA in the near future.

  5. Man, I have been out of Indiana wrestling for a while but after finally getting to page six I think I understand why all the fuss. So the loser of a sectional pig tail match is out of the tournament? Isn't this the real problem here? I can't believe there isn't more outrage over that huge flaw in the system if I am understanding this correctly. To address JMILL and the others who say you should always throw a kid out there to take a beating instead of forfeiting, can you please understand that you don't have the same problems as others do and that maybe a coach has a reason for protecting a kid. For example, we have a freshman 215lb kid who will eventually be a very good wrestler but weighs around 195 and has 1 year of experience and is clearly not ready to wrestle a returning state qualifier level senior at 215. He has 1 varsity win and usually does not make it through the first period but fights his butt off and takes his lumps because he is the only option for the team. I want that kid to continue in the sport. If I decide to forfeit a match to protect that kid and keep him from getting hurt or completely demoralized and drive him to quit, I think that is more important than your 1 in 8 chance of drawing into a pig tail bracket at sectional or allowing your kid to get 15 takedowns. The kid is not a snowflake, he is the best lineman on our freshman team. I feel it is my duty to decide what is best for that kid and his retention in the sport. You can't expect a kid with 1 year in the sport to think that getting pinned in the first period repeatedly is fun. He should really be JV but there are matches that kid can compete in at a varsity level, but they probably aren't against a team like Brownsburg. If that means you get a forfeit, that does stink but it is not the end of the world and it will not cause your kid to quit. I can't build a program if I can't keep kids like that, but more importantly we shouldn't run kids out of the sport just because we have a hole in our roster.

Yorktown has the compression set. No issues with anything being caught and to be honest I like them a LOT better then the fight shorts. Very clean looking.

I'm afraid it's going to take a kid getting his finger caught. And injuring himself before this is addressed. It will happen, if it hasn't already. Phil Cook

  13. I think there's 2 state qualifiers/placer(s) on the bench. Lawhead and Myers are both very solid. I'm sure other programs have studs on the bench too. Just speaking to the depth of talent in our room. Last night was a great dual for everyone that got to see it. Perry is loaded as well. Up and down their lineup!

  16. Agreed well done. Its food to see the good sport getting positive coverage. Brownsburg is loaded. Im thinking 21st national ranking is a little underrated. And four state champs could really happen.

  18. Sources have told me that's the only reason they pulled Nick's red shirt this year. If Cortez was healthy they would've let him have the spot even though Nick will probably score more points at the NCAAs.

  19. There were several surprises and lots of tough wrestling. The tournament was exactly as billed though. It was run effectively and efficiently. Fantastic awards! Outstanding job to Ryan and host BG. This is the kind of tournament that keeps kids in the sport. If you missed it, you will definitely want to get in next year!

just to enlighten the rest of the board.....................someone who works 30 yrs in da mill only has 4-7 fingers left total and has inhaled lots and I mean lots of chemicals that damage the thought and reasoning section of the brain, so when he says 7 its most likely based on the # of bodies/heads he saw floating in Wolf Lake while driving home from work. He woke up confused and just thought this must be a premonition and posted his prediction. Lets not lose sight of the fact that @regionrat1 has been invited to move down to live in #TheCounty near 1 of the local trailer parks in Avon by former region stud Kyle Ayersman. So his allegiance to the North may be short lived when he finds his new digs and starts eating at Charbonno's.

  21. Have to agree with Y2. I know a good math tutor that would be happy to help with that calculation. I think if all plays in the notrhs favor at best 6 but in reality I see 2 solid golds and 4 that could pull off a gold heist at the bank. If I was a betting person I would go with 3 because even the solid golds aren't always as solid as you might think. Anything can happen and as you know there have been a lot of robberies in the vault at the bank.

  24. I couldn't disagree more. There are tons of kids who don't want to lose every match as freshmen that can be very good wrestlers as juniors or seniors. I want that kid around to find out what they can become and to give them a chance to be a part of the team. A big freshman can't be treated like a senior - they are two completely different animals.

    Seeding Meeting Change???

My kid will get thrown into the hopper and could wrestle the #1 seed in a rat tail when he might have earned a 5 or 6 seed. That's not how it should be.
    1 point
  26. Unfortunately with no wrestle backs at the regional level this will change some 3 to 4 seeds and put them against the number 2 person at regionals and end their season. The problem is our system is so fragile without wrestle backs anything and everything messes with it.

  27. I have coached against other coaches that I know would not and did not wrestle against my kids. Giving us a forfeit. They did so to eliminate head to head for seeding purpose come sectional time. This rule will allow those coaches and others like them to do this even more. Now you prevent your kid from an L and Take a W from the other kid for seeding purpose. This will happen without a doubt. Like mentioned else where on this thread teams that have a less than full squad year end year out will have a difficult time picking up matches. Someone said something about pushing coaches to recruit more. ( Not sure what coach doesn't encourage kids to come out for their team). What will happen in the near future with teams that are riddled with forfeits will be wrestling each other. Therefore, hurting the smaller squads further at any and all seeding meetings. Phil Cook

    Seeding Meeting Change???

In my opinion - this is just another example of oligarchy of the wrestling coaches association. They claim to want what's BEST for the sport, want to GROW the support - but in reality, they are "looking out" for a select few "powerhouse" schools. Actually, I don't want to throw stones and have my first post seem to be painting a "conspiracy" theory...however the past few decisions that have been passed down from the IHSAA - which says these decisions come from the recommendation of the Coaches Associations - seem to be pointed towards "big" programs with no thoughts of the "little guy."

    Seeding Meeting Change???

This is going to create havoc. For instance we wrestled a sectional opponent this year and they forfeited a few weights to us that they had guys that wrestled the previous round. Now my kid is being punished for them not wrestling us for whatever reason it was(good, bad, or ugly). I'm hoping our fearless IHSWCA leader has contacted Mr. Faulkens to discuss this.
