  1. By STEVE KRAH stvkrh905@gmail.com Kris Rumph and Kasper McIntosh have become familiar faces on the IHSAA State Finals wrestling scene. The two Portage High School grapplers have been on the mats at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis a combined five times and both competed under the lights in — Rumph placing second at 138 pounds in 2017 and McIntosh second at 145 in 2016. Seniors Rumph and McIntosh are back at those same weights and preparing for what they hope will be plenty more success in their final high school state tournament series. Portage scored a meet-record 275 points and won the Duneland Athletic Conference tournament in its own gym Saturday, Jan. 13 with McIntosh taking the third DAC crown of his prep career and Rumph his second. Now, they are focused on getting ready for the Jan. 27 Griffith Sectional. The Hobart Regional is Feb. 3, East Chicago Semistate Feb. 10 and State Finals Feb. 16-17. Portage wrestlers are trained by seventh-year head coach Leroy Vega and his staff. Vega won individual state titles for the Indians in 1996 and 1997 and went on to be a three-time NCAA All-American at the University of Minnesota. Vega sees special qualities in both Rumph and McIntosh. “Kris is very athletic,” says Vega. “He can do things that not many guys in our guys can do. “His speed is unbelievable. You slow down the film to see ‘how did he do that?’” Rumph’s combination of speed and strength make it difficult for opponents to prepare for him. “You can’t train for his speed and his athleticism,” says Vega. “You don’t know what he’s capable of doing. “You can’t replicate that in the wrestling room. Nobody wrestles like him.” Vega asked McIntosh to open up his offense and he has done just that with point-producing results. “We had to make him realize that you are not going to win state title or be very successful with one move (which was the high crotch),” says Vega. “Kasper is just a hard worker. He’s going to take whatever it is to reach his goal. Whether it’s watching film or eating right, he is always striving to be the best.” McIntosh, who also finished fifth at the State Finals at 145 in 2017 and eighth at 138 in 2015, says it has been a process to diversify his attack. “It took a lot of time,” says McIntosh. “It’s been two steps forward and one step back. “I’ve slowly progressed. I’m getting pretty good. At first, it was just a high crotch. Now, I’m getting real good motion and wearing on a guy. “Putting that all together is working really well.” McIntosh, who first competed in a Calumet Township elementary tournament as a kindergartener, has placed in High School Nationals, Iowa Nationals, FloWrestling Nationals and Super 32, but there’s just something about competing for a state title. “The state tournament is the most-anticipated one,” says McIntosh. After high school, he will follow in Vega’s foot steps and study and wrestle at Minnesota. “(Vega) was real helpful with the decision,” says McIntosh. “He told me to choose the school that is right for me.” McIntosh, an honor roll student with a 3.4 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale, plans to major in electrical engineering. He comes from a big family. Keith and Teri McIntosh have seven children. There’s Keith, John, Brian, Shiann, Jason, Kasper and 3-year-old Liam. So far, Kasper is the only wrestler. Wrestling — with its physicality and tenacity — can be a grind. Vega and his staff help their athletes push past the pain. “We make sure the kids are tough,” says Vega. “They have to believe in their training. “When they are tired, they can go even further.” Some workouts can be very grueling. But there is a purpose. “There will be days in practice one guy will get beat on for 30 minutes by two guys,” says McIntosh. “You get to the point where you’re not wrestling, you’re surviving. If we can get through that, we can get through anything. “We break ourselves down and build ourselves back up. It shows us how far we can go.” Vega and his assistants build the wrestler back up and fill their heads with positive thoughts. “The mental part is huge,” says Vega. Rumph, who also placed fourth at the State Finals at 132 in 2016, is all-in with that way of thinking. “If you’re not mentally tough, the sport is not for you,” says Rumph. “We push our bodies at practice to a level is insane. Most people are scared to go hard and get tired.” Rumph is motivated this season to do well for his parents. His mother, Donna McGee, has become his biggest fan since he reached high school and showed he was really serious about the sport. The nurse is always cheering for her “baby boy” — the only one who is still at home, following Briggs Rumph Jr., Jarred Rumph, Mikey Rumph and Kenny Williams. His father, Briggs Rumph Sr., died when Kris was 7. Before that, he told him to pick a sport and give it his all. “I’m pretty sure he’d be super happy seeing the stuff I’ve accomplished,” says Rumph, who was a Super 32 semifinalist last summer and competed in the Iowa Nationals the summer before that. Rumph likes to watch videos of elite wrestlers Jordan Burroughs and Nahshon Garrett. “I put it in my own little wrestling style,” says Rumph, who does have plans to wrestle in college but is not yet committed. 2. Volunteering does not prevent criticism. It's the same with iswa stuff when they do things people don't agree with (qualifiers) you can criticize. Yes busco is giving his time that's admirable and I don't think he as a person should take the heat for this but I'm sick of people using the exscuse of volunteering as a means to avoid criticism for doing something poorly.

  5. I have to say this has made buscowrestling come out smelling like roses. I don't know why we always want to assume the worst of someone and the big school guy has to act like Busco's not worthy to make a decision because clearly the big schools should decide everything. All the guy did was volunteer, donate his time, and try to help. Then he is accused of shenanigans and demeaned. I would really hope coaches have more ethics than they are given credit for and there is a good reason why some stuff happens even if it appears bad to those without information on the scenario. I don't know anyone in this drama, but would say thanks to the guy who volunteered. I am sure none of them intended to screw kids over. Hopefully they do listen and make improvements and everyone learns from mistakes made. As a whole (with few exceptions), everyone in the sport ( I will make an exception for the IHSAA who I do believe doesn't care or know about the sport ) is more like your brother than your enemy.

  6. Busco has always produced good quality wrestlers and kids for their size. Just because your mud hole isn’t near ours it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist or have a history. Also Sam is one member of a group that made this decision. Maybe the decision wasn’t vetted well enough but that group does have good intentions and at least they are putting effort forth.

We had a kid burn his mom's house down and he was arrested so he didn't make it to practice. Head coach still tries to convince me it was my fault because i moved practice time ahead an hour (Christmas break morning practice) and he didn't want to get out of bed so he started the house on fire. Seriously.

  10. David Palmer Legendary Delta/ Muncie Southside wrestler, David Palmer, lost his battle to cancer in late December. He was 54 years old. In the early 1980's David was a one-time state runner up and a state champion for Muncie Southside as well as a 2x state champion for Delta HS. David led Delta to their first team state championship title in 1981 that eventually turned into 5 consecutive titles. In 1979 David became the first Indiana wrestler to make the world team and the first to win a gold medal. David wrestled for Oklahoma Univ. on a full ride scholarship and graduated with a bachelors degree in accounting. David was an inspiration to all those that knew him and was always helping others. He will be greatly missed! Please join friends and family for a Life Celebration of David Palmer this Sunday January 14th at Mansfield Park in Muncie. Celebration begins at 4:00pm. I did some research and Garcia wrestled a few of these guys. beat #2 Disabato(got 4th) 2-1 beat#5 Carmany (got 7th) 8-6 beat #16 Walczac(dnp) 8-4 Lost to #10 in nation Decatur 14-5 in the Finals #1 Burnett placed 3rd lost 13-4 to champ Beat#5(IN)Poynter 9-3,beat #2 Disabato 3-2 #5(Indiana) Poynter placed 6th lost to #2 Disabato 5-3 and unranked Massey 2-1 #6 Thomas placed 8th got pinned by Champion lost to #5 Carmany 18-4 #15 Chapman did not place only lost to Champion 9-3 #22 Zahoransky did not place #25 Donathan did not place Asa getting to finals shows that he has definitely reached the top of the tier just below B. Lee and M.Paris. Can make an argument that he is in serious discussions for the 3rd best I've right now. Great kid and Amazing wrestler. Keep up the good work TeamGarcia To say this is one of the toughest High School tournaments in the nation is not that far fetched. When ranked guys from Ohio are not even placing top 8 and one of best wrestlers in Indiana at 126 placed lower than what he is ranked shows it is just insanely competitive. It looks more like a tough Semi state Tournament or better. Id love to see Mater Dei,Cathedral, Brownsburg and Perry Meridian try and get in this.

  12. I wish they wouldn't of pulled his redshirt. I know he can make some noise and AA this year but would like to see if he could win a couple titles and I think he has a better chance at that if he redshirts his freshman year like Red did.

    Nick Lee question

Here are my thoughts on Red vs Lee II, if it happens.... I'm from Southern IN so I am a huge Nick Lee fan. Pros for Lee 1. I don't know who is in Nebraska's room or RTC, but I know Lee has some of the best competition in the country he sees daily. Don't know how much he works with Retherford, but there can't be anyone better right now to drill with and learn from. There has to be an infectious confidence when you can perform with that talent and have it all, including world class coaching in your corner. 2. Lee has done well at avenging losses. In fact, I'm not sure I can think of any loss of his that came against someone he already wrestled. He avenged freestyle losses to both Carter Happel and Mitchell McKee on his way to his Junior Fargo Title. Both had teched him in their first match. Other recent losses off the top of my head have been to Jaydin Eierman, Seth Gross, Yianni D, Kaden Gfeller and Brock Zacherl. The only one of those not ranked in the top 10 currently is Gfeller and that was a wild match that Nick seemed to be taking control of before losing position in a scramble and taking the fall. I'm not saying Nick would win a rematch against all of those, but I'd put my money on him beating Gfeller and Zacherl. The only wrestler I can find that Nick lost twice to is Zahid Valencia, which was more than a few years ago. Nick lost to him twice in the same tournament. Based on all of that, I think Nick would be ready to go against Chad and there would be no doubts or mind monsters. 3. Nick is hot right now and technically better than he was two years ago. 4. Schedule - this could go both ways... With 7 duals remaining, Nick will likely face two ranked opponents, both likely Top 10 ranked in Tommy Thorn and Joey McKenna (not to mention wrestling under the pressure of a possible swing match in a 1 vs 2 dual meet. He'll also face Purdue's Limmex this Friday who just beat Chad. Lastly, he could face Carter Happel of Iowa (see #2). Fortunately for him, both the Ohio State and Iowa matches will be at home with PSU's loud fan base behind him. This schedule could knock him back to reality a bit or propel him to a path for All-American. Pros for Chad 1. Chad won match 1 in a huge match that had his 4 year, undefeated record on the line. That's performing under pressure! 2. Chad has more college level matches under his belt and has faced better competition - Meredith twice, Alber, Jack, Thorn, Headlee this year, not to mention the experience he got last year wrestling unattached, including the 4th place Midlands finish. 3. Schedule - this could go both ways.... But Chad has struggled with losses in 2 of his last 3. With 7 duals remaining for Nebraska, Chad would face only one ranked opponent at this time, #19 Cole Weaver. I didn't count MSU's Gasca because he'll certainly drop from 20 after the thrashing he took yesterday. That could give him the opportunity to build his confidence back and get into a groove before the B1G Championships. It could also hurt him a bit without having top competition going in All of that said, I hope like hell Nick wins and think it is very possible he will. But Chad pulled off a major win the first time under a ton of pressure, so if I have to pick, I'd take Chad unless I see something between now and then that changes my mind. Like the first time, it could truly be a flip of the coin type match up. Both wrestlers are great representatives of IN wrestling and I hope both do well in the bigger picture.

sorry, it may have been an injury suffered at a latora leg camp this summer when he was wrestling my 80lb son. Being down in score he chose down in the 3rd period. Well the top work is stellar for any Latora grad and the rest is history with Drew needing shoulder work done...............Another Latora graduation success story.......sorry Drew as my son told him he does have some region roots in him.................LOL !!!

  21. I have been really thinking and wondering about this match, and this could be one of the dumbest posts I have ever done because I may be higher on how important confidence is in wrestling than anyone I know. Just because I have seen so many wrestlers wrestle TOTALLY different matches when they had confidence compared to when they didn't have a whole lot of confidence. It is like a night and day difference sometimes. I just don't know if this still applies as much or not the higher level you get to. I honestly think Lee has looked better in college so far in limited time and if you didn't follow these guys in indiana and watch their finals match then most would definitely take Lee. But what I'm thinking is when a wrestler wrestles with much more confidence than he normally does it can make you more aggressive and you will open up your offense and attack more. Here is my question and I really shoulda did a poll to see because I'm really curious what people think.but never have done one on here. Does the fact that Chad Red beating Nick Lee just a few years ago in the Finals of state have any effect at all on how this match would go? Surely Red is really confident that he can beat him because he did it not long ago. and you know Red has to also be thinking he has improved more than Lee since then because he has had more College Practices and matches than Lee has.he wasn't so sure he could beat Lee at the time IMO(so don't roast me). I know when it comes down too it it may not matter at all that he has beaten Lee at his best at the time. but I know when I wrestled someone I knew was one of the best in the state(or nation really) for the first time then I had some doubts in my head and I didn't have all the confidence I usually had when I'd hit a move or wrestle someone period. But the next time I wrestled them after I did beat them the first time then I knew I'd beaten them before and I could do it again but probably by more points because I believed i practiced harder than anyone at the time and I felt no one would improve more than me because that's what motivated me knowing that if someone improved more or practiced harder than me then he would beat me next time, so my confidence was sky high that I could take him down(or hold him down) and beat him worse. But on the other side of the equation what is Nick Lee feeling/thinking when they wrestle? Is he more confident this time and motivated because he wants to avenge the loss and prove to Indiana fans and coaches that he is the better Indiana recruit? Or will he be less confident knowing that as dominant as he was to everyone his Junior year in HS that he couldn't do too much against Chad Red and Red has had to get A lot better since then being in Nebraska's room the past year and a half(don't know exactly how long) and knowing how good of coaches he has including his dad(Red Sr) that also helped coach him when he was younger? Either way I really hope it happens this year because they are both 100℅ Healthy and are very young and were both awesome recruits and are learning a whole lot and are getting significantly better every single live College match. It will be exciting no matter when or where it takes place but I'd love for it to really have something on the line during it like in the finals of a tournament or in a really tight team race just to add to the emotions and atmosphere. Thoughts please. And sorry this is so long and may not even have any effect at all on the outcome when they wrestle next time. But This is a message board and instead of me wondering about this all by my lonesome I have you great "Indianamatters" to ask and hear what y'all think about it.lol. wow I really came up with that name for us. I like it.we need this on a shirt and I'd buy it . #IndianaMatters

    Blaze Lowery

Just want to give some big props to this guy. He wrestled his heart out the other night against Zach Melloh on his senior night. Many believed he would give up bonus points to a very-polished Melloh, but Blaze stayed in the match the whole time, and after several crazy takedown defenses, even scored a takedown on Melloh and held him to an 11-8 decision. That is heart and what every coach looks for in a wrestler and what every young teammate looks for in a senior. Wishing you the best of luck on the rest of your senior year, bro! Blessed to call you a friend and awesome to see the growth you’ve shown!

Some from coaching and some from when I wrestled. Not making it to an event. Funny at first, but less humorous after. Phone call “Coach I won’t be able to make it out van is on fire.” This was a kid that’s always late and also missed a few meets. We are driving to the meet which goes past his road and sure enough a vans engine was on fire in sub-zero temperatures with emergency out there. We doubled back and picked the kids up on the way to the meet. Thankfully everyone was safe. Missed weight: Kid weighed out about 1.5lb under weight. Came into school the next day 2lb over. Kid: Coach all I had was water last night. Coach: Well how much water did you have. Kid: A few glasses coach. But that can’t be why because it’s clear so doesn’t weigh much. Second best was when our HWT didn’t make weight. Kid: All I had was fruit and vegetables Coach. Coach:No way you gained that much weight just eating some fruit and vegetable. Kids brother: He ate a crap ton of them all night long coaches. I told him to stop but he said it’s fine they are healthy foods so he wont gain weight. Not coming to practice the day before the first meet so couldn’t wrestle at that meet: Kid: Coach you said we had to be clean shaven by that practice or we would be in trouble. Coach: Yes. Kid: Well my mom hadn’t been to Walmart yet, so I went home. Coach: You know we have extra razors and shaving cream in the Med kit right. Kid: Yes coach, but my mom said I have sensitive skin so she only buys me the special kind.

  36. To answer your questions about any influence that may have in the wrestling community all I can tell you is that I joined the association. I volunteered to help with some committees that they had, volunteered as a regional rep. I ran for the position of secratary twice unopposed. Literally any influence that I have is available to anyone willing to put in some time to help with the IHSWCA. In terms of our wrestling program (which I am not sure has anything at all to do with my ability to volunteer for the coaches association) we are a small community about 10 minutes from Northwest Fort Wayne. We are not Prairie Heights or Adams Central, but I have to admit that I am a little surprised that a small school wrestling aficionado like yourself didn't know we finished 2nd, 1st, and 5th at the first three team states. Thats not to say that we are the greatest team in the state, but we have done some good things for a small team, and are generally fairly competitive for a school our size. Are you advocating that only big schools have a say in the IHSWCA? Is there some sort of success factor you feel should be in place for IHSWCA volunteers?
