I used 2 hands, 1 foot and my cubicle neighbors 2 gloves sitting on her desk and was still a little short so I found 3 tootsie rolls in my desk drawer (good thing the score prediction wasn't 29 !!!!)

  7. Or...... if you get beat by a really good kid that nobody else in the bracket has wrestled shouldn’t count either. Just count wins and loses to average kids.

  8. Wow, that is just terrible. With his lineage and AAU success, he is the one of the primary wrestlers that shepherded in the modern era of Indiana Wrestling that we can be thankful for today. His success at Delta, love them or hate them, raised the bar of the state tournament excitement giving you guys like Ginther, etc. Guys like Palmer brought the wrestling year round mantra to the forefront. He was the equivalent then, of today's Andrew Howe. World Champ, beast, made it out of Indiana to the highest stage in Oklahoma, but had some injury issues that hampered him. That, and having Mark Schultz and Dan Chaid in the room at OU. If the IHSAA or Coaches assocation doesn't do an award after this man, it would be criminal. Cancer sucks.

  12. Absurd the kid went out to wrestle and he wrestled if the guy was cutting him and getting takedowns so be it as long as it's not letting the kid off of his back which is a violation this should not ever be a warning given to a wrestler

  13. David Palmer Legendary Delta/ Muncie Southside wrestler, David Palmer, lost his battle to cancer in late December. He was 54 years old. In the early 1980's David was a one-time state runner up and a state champion for Muncie Southside as well as a 2x state champion for Delta HS. David led Delta to their first team state championship title in 1981 that eventually turned into 5 consecutive titles. In 1979 David became the first Indiana wrestler to make the world team and the first to win a gold medal. David wrestled for Oklahoma Univ. on a full ride scholarship and graduated with a bachelors degree in accounting. David was an inspiration to all those that knew him and was always helping others. He will be greatly missed! Please join friends and family for a Life Celebration of David Palmer this Sunday January 14th at Mansfield Park in Muncie. Celebration begins at 4:00pm. For more info please contact : Delta coach Gary Schliessman at cabincreations@comcast.net

    Too many takedowns(?)

If you can't pin the guy by all means cut the guy until there is a tech fall. What I am saying is if the wrestler is horrible what good does it do toying with him?

  22. I would compare this to kicking an onside kick, throwing a touchdown pass, kicking an onside kick and throwing a touchdown pass, kicking an onside kick and throwing a touchdown pass etc. etc. (when you're already blowing a team out) to get your QB a TD passing record against inferior opponents. There is nothing illegal about doing this but are these the lessons you want to teach the young men and women you're coaching? If you're coaching strictly for wins and records, you're missing the boat as a coach. Your responsibility is to not only make better wrestlers, but more importantly, better people using wrestling as the vehicle to teach such important life lessons. When these lessons are taught, wins and losses take care of themselves and true growth happens. Just one man's humble opinion.

  29. I think this will come down to 106 who wins, 126 swing match who wants it more, 170 can mosconi not give up bonus points? And the final decision who's big boy is more ready. I have seen cathedrals heavyweight and he is not to bad. I have not seen Perry's this year. Should be exciting to watch. Have fun with it and let's get some emotions flowing

  30. Hopefully it is a discussion between coach's and kids. My coach told me to stop doing it to lesser opponents in high school. To tell you the truth, as a young kid all I thought about was more takedowns and didn't event think about it. As an adult and coach, there seems to be no point to it. If it is a necessary strategy to win, then by all means do what you have to do. If it is about getting 15 takedowns against at kid who can't defend himself, then you have to start to wonder what you are teaching your kids. At some point if you consider what the definition of "unsportsmanlike" is, I would have to agree that playing with an opponent to pad your stats probably is not sportsmanlike.

    Finishes

My favorite finish, but I'm bios........ The Warsaw wrestler rallied in the final seconds to earn a thrilling victory in the IHSAA State Finals at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Hatch, a WCHS freshman, posted an incredible come from behind 13-12 win by decision over Lakeland senior Lukas Long in first-round action in the 106-pound weight class. Hatch, who rallied from being down 7-1, avenged a loss to Lukas earlier this season to move into quarterfinal action Saturday morning. “It was just fantastic,” said Warsaw coach Justin Smith about the win in a phone interview Friday night. “It seemed like the whole arena was watching this match. I know this one will stick in my mind forever.” Hatch trailed 9-3 entering the third and final period. He got three takedowns to pull within 12-10 late in the match before getting the final three points in the final few seconds on a stalling call on Long and a final takedown just before the match concluded for the 13-12 victory. “Everyone, including us knew the score and that Kyle had won 13-12,” recounted Smith. “But, Kyle thought at first it was 12-12 and he went back to the center ready for overtime. He then found out he had won and was jumping up and down and screaming like the rest of us.” He shot 4 sweeps back and forth, back and forth till he chopped the tree down. The crowd went wild. One of the few matches I don't have on tape, because ISHAA was supposed to tape it and they didn't. The company that did it for them no longer exist and I haven't been able to find a copy.

    Too many takedowns(?)

I'm never going to get mad at someone doing that to any of my kids. If you don't want to see that don't wrestle the kid once he steps on the mat it's go time as long as they are following the rules. If you think that kid can't handle that don't wrestle him

    Too many takedowns(?)

I remember my freshman year our 103 pounder was a first year, under 80 pounds going up against a semi-state quality kid and watched him get take down with ease over and over and over again, even getting warned for letting him up while on his back. I couldn’t understand why he wouldn’t just finish it off early. I get that it can be nice to rack up takedowns sometimes, and no I don’t think there should be any rule stating that you can’t do it, but I think it just looks so bush league for someone to go out there and score 10 takedowns in the first period on somebody clearly outmatched when they could just finish the match in literally 20 seconds.

    Too many takedowns(?)

I think it only becomes a problem when one Wrestler is clearly superior to the other. If that is the only way you can win then do it but if you can pin a kid no one wants to see you get 15 takedowns

  38. I can tell you that the talk of a new location with full size mats to help out with the speed of the tournament and to help accommodate the athletes in a more suitable fashion (I mean come on it is a state tournament and putting kids no matter what weight class on 1/3rd mats is absurd) is likely going to happen after this year. The regional discussion is a great one and I am a supporter but it would take much more structure and help from those that want to volunteer to help it be a reality. If that is you and you feel like you can help then contact the IHWCA and let them know you are willing to help out and solve the MS state issues. See if you can attend the planning meetings for the '19 MS state season and actively help to make a difference. I, as the Kids Director for ISWA, obviously have a vested interest in MS state as we get our MS national team for the Heartland Trip from the state placers so I also support the best way possible of seeding the tournament in hopes that the end result is the best kids finishing the day (or night) at the top of the podium. I would hope that the IHWCA would be willing to listen to people and ideas to possibly improve this process. With this being said that is who and where you need to direct all of the ideas for this to see if change of any kind can be taken into consideration.

  42. This is from coach Tonte: I don’t have an account, but this is something I wanted to make sure I said something about. I have many friends that run academies and don’t think any of them would consider guys like us as part time coaches. We and countless other coaches running successful programs do not consider ourselves to be part timers.

  43. Great points made in nearly all the above posts. I would only add that strictly from a legality standpoint......private sessions are in fact legal. This came from Assistant Commisioner Robert Faulkens himself, in a response to an email our AD & I sent. He paralleled privates (paid) to more of a clinic. Obviously no other athletes from separate schools can be involved, the clinician can have no direct contract or be coaching at another in-state high school, and also that you can't have the individual instructing multiple kids at once. He referred us to rule 15-1.4. It states........ a. Students may not attend a non-school sponsored clinic in a team sport, but may attend a non-school sponsored clinic in an individual sport (note: wrestling is considered an individual sport).b. If a clinic is conducted over more than 1 day, students will be limited to 3 hours of sports instruction or daily practice.c. a Clinic must be conducted during non-school time and no school practices or contests may be missed. Apart from answering the "legal" aspect of your question. Certain preferences come into play with various coaches. In fact, I know of a couple coaches who prefer their kids train absolutely nowhere else! And yes....that includes the off-season. While that wouldn't be the right fit for me personally.......I can tell you this. Those guys resume's speak for themselves. They've produced (or helped produce) multiple State Champs. I'd simply encourage you to hit all the angles with the current coach. Allow him to thoroughly explain himself to you in person. Not saying this is the case.....but I've found that in many cases the greatest problems between Coaches/Parents/Wrestlers come down to an overall lack of communication. Genuinely hope things work out positively for you & your son brother.

  44. Oh, that’s a good one. Robert Miller was probably the most unathletic out of the group too. But, no one, and I mean no one, could stop or figure out his left handed headlock. Robert was one of the most intriguing champs we have ever had. Started his freshman year at Cathedral only to win the title for Lawrence North two years later. The last of one of the nastiest group that has arguably come through Indianapolis in a couple generations, Robert emulated the Christian Park room. More champs and placewinners came out of that room than any other I have seen. Lance Ellis, Billy and Jason Terry, Rob Walke, Matt Puckett, the Guhls, the McGinleys, and Danny Pleak was prob in there as a 5 or 6 year old too. Good memories of the 1980s/90s Cathedral and Warren teams. The Indy near Eastside’s proudest wrestling heritage. Absolute assassins in the day.

    Depth of 126

I recall those guys, but I didn't recall the bracket. That's a good one, particularly since none of the champs made the finals. What struck me today was the ranking of Mills & Mejia at 7 & 8. That's not a comment on the ranking, but rather how loaded and deep that class is.
