    Thank You Louis Rosbottom

It is my understanding that Keith Davison is the new ISWA chairman. I first want to congratulate Keith on his new position and wish him the best of luck. I would like to thank Louis Rosbottom for everything he, and his wife Sharon, have done for the ISWA over the years. Their dedication and devotion to Indiana wrestling is immeasurable. I had the privilege of sitting on the ISWA board of directors for roughly 8 years (a number of years ago) with the Rosbottom's. When you start looking at the ISWA's annual budget meeting, services, programs, the ISWA office, trips, coaches, tournament management, etc, etc, etc, the ISWA is a HUGE undertaking and the Rosbottom's have been a positive influence and driving force behind all of these operations for many years. Thank you Louis for your servant leadership style of management. Indiana wrestling wouldn't be where it is today without everything you and Sharon have done with the ISWA. Regards, Trent McCormick Yorktown Wrestling

    Rest In Peace Tim Ayersman

As some of you may already know my father Tim Ayersman passed away Sunday afternoon. My father was the biggest supporter of me, Lake Central, Purdue, and now Brownsburg. He loved Indiana wrestling and everything that went with it. Vistation will be tomorrow (Wednesday the 13th) from 3-8 at Kish Funeral Home in Munster, Indiana. If everyone could send a few prayers towards my family we would greatly appreciate it. He loved getting on Indianamat just to see what was going on after I graduated from high school. Lastly, contrary to to popular belief, my father was not "Buttdrag" as some of you thought. Kyle Ayersman

I agree with you completely, and also thank you for your time & effort you give to these kids. On this whole topic of Jr high kids wrestling in high school I believe it is fine , if a younger kid is good enough to complete at that level, why would we won't to restrict that? Do we not continually seek the best competition we can, to try and make our wrestlers better? Some restrictions that we put in place will only restrict our progress in the long run. My son Bryer wrestled for you at the heartland duals in Iowa earlier this year. He's a freshman this season & has been working his tail off . He wrestled IHPO this weekend at 129 & faced the #2 seed in the 2nd round ( Hassan Johnson ) last years IHPO Champion. I honestly didn’t think he had a chance, but he surprised me again with his throw caution to the wind and go for broke style of wrestling that seems to wear people down & pulled out a big upset. Bryer did not place but he did win some big matches against some really good competition in a 64 man bracket. Again thank you for your time and the compliments you gave my son before, it means alot to these young men.

I didn't know your dad, but I'm very sorry to hear this. I will never forget the match you had with Brendan Campbell under the lights. One of the best finals matches I've seen. I'm sure he was proud as heck of you and your accomplishments.

    Weight Lifting on Game Day

I'm not sure the question should be "to lift or not to lift," but rather how to best utilize the time in the weight room on a game day. From what I have seen a lifting teacher doesn't have to make some personalized plan for every student as an earlier post suggested. Sure there are sports specific lifts to emphasis but that would be a lot of work to balance all of those routines in the space most weight rooms have. But a good lifting teacher should have the time and ability to recognize what he/she is asking of the students and how that may affect certain athletes who are competing later that day. A good teacher may allowing competition athletes to have some minor adjustments to the lifting routine depending on the normal lifting plan for that day. This would be no different than giving some modifications on an assignments for some students, so I'm sure a teacher that cares to make an effort would be able to handle this. Sadly though I have heard of a few instances where the lifting teacher either did recognize a particularly taxing routine would cause an issue or just didn't care enough to allow for some minor adjustments to me made. I think this is where good communication between the teacher, coaches, and athletes is helpful. But also rather than telling the teacher to not let the athlete lift at all the coach should be open minded to the teacher approach if he/she has a solid background on the subject and can show proof of that their plan is successful to athletes. Many days the regular lifting routine would be fine for those having a game or not. Heck in many case the lifting teacher isn't asking athletes to push it to the ultimate limit within the hour of actual workout time most of them have. Nor are most students really trying to push themselves to the breaking point over the course of that same hour. Realistically trying to get most of the students to just lift with maximum effort and proper form is a daunting task for most. However, on a few of those class days the style of lifting could indeed cause some minor issues for an athlete who will have a game later that day. For that the teacher could easily ask those athletes to make a minor adjustment to the number of lifts, the amount of reps, the amount of weight, skip/substitute one of the lifts in the rotation, etc. A lifting teacher with a decent background in exercise science should be able to recognize when he/she has assigned a particularly taxing routine and know what adjustments would be warranted for completion athletes. So yes based on what I have seen before getting in a good lifting routine and sweat going is helpful to most athletes on game day. Especially when you consider most athletes are spending the majority of the day rest in a school desk. I'm not exercise science expert, but have seen enough lifting plans and talked to enough exercise science guys to know that it more helpful than harmful to do some exercise on a game day. However, a good teacher should be mindful enough of what he/she is planning to know if that routine could be a possible detriment to the athletes competition performance.

I'm very honored (& a bit scared) at being chosen to serve as the next Chairman for ISWA. Thank you for your support...or perhaps your patience as I work to earn it.

    Middle schoolers who could place

I coached the middle school national team at folkstyle national duals the last handful of years (including the team that took 3rd this year). With this said, very few middle schoolers and incoming freshmen have been able to place in the top 4 at the ihpo. Saw some really good kids come up short yesterday. But... I assure you that a handful of freshmen will place at state this year. The growth of these studs from November til February is typically amazing to see. With that said... I will say it again... Jesse is born ready. Look forward to seeing him being our next 4 timer (unless he goes to Blair or something like that).

    Middle schoolers who could place

I just tweeted this, four middle school wrestlers have made the finals 3 champs all at 109, Brandon James at the 1st IHPO, Nick Lee at the 2nd, and Jesse Mendez this year. Also Mason Manville made the finals at 155lbs as an 8th grader losing by 1 point to an Illinois state champ. That's some very good company.

Jesse is an 8th grader, but a stud none the less !!!! Great Job on his victory yesterday and as previously stated by numerous people he is a great kid ! I know his time spent on the Brownsburg Elementary Team State Dual team really shaped his life and his wrestling abilities............so there is that ! #TheCounty #PainTrain

    Middle schoolers who could place

Mendez could win state at 106-113 as an 7th grader and 113-132 as an 8th grader. He just beat two Indiana state place winners and one Kentucky state place winner yesterday as a 7th grader We know Nick Lee won as a 7th grader. Who did he beat in his path? One big name I remember is Hayden lee...who else?
