357IHSWCA Team State Duals: The Good and Bad
Yesterday I had the privilege of attending the first of hopefully many IHSWCA Team State Duals championships. There has been lots of criticism and praise of the event from the selection to the date and everything in between. It was a great day of wrestling and for the first go-round, it was spectacular. As with anything in life if you don’t strive to improve the product will suffer. Here are some things I saw as a casual fan and promoter of the sport.
The Good
1A Teams and Fans
[caption id=attachment_4708" align="alignright" width="300] Adams Central celebrates after a big win[/caption]
During the finals the fans and teams really got after it and every match was exciting. It was a great atmosphere and it seemed the kids and coaches had the most enthusiasm of any of the classes. You could tell Adams Central and Churubusco put a lot of stock in this event and each point scored was cheered by each squad.
Coaches and Schools getting excited for the event
Lots of schools made this event a big deal and it showed in not only things like t-shirts, but fan support. Great job to everyone that made this tournament something special.
Mater Dei bumping up
It is very rare that a team will bump up classes, but Mater Dei did and lost by the slimmest of margins. Thank you for not being a big fish in a small pond Wildcats and getting after it with the big boys.
Refs
The refs were great and were “not seen†for most of the day. Great job by the IHSWCA getting the best refs in the state.
Awards
The awards were top notch for everyone and not only will the participants have great memories they will have a great keepsake to go along with it.
The Bad
Fans for the Finals
I was disappointed to not see many casual fans or fans from teams not in the finals staying to watch the last three matches.
Team Scoreboards
It was extremely difficult to keep track of the team score of each match if you didn’t have TrackWrestling on your phone.
People complaining about the process
I for one am not shy about criticizing the IHSWCA, but this time they did a great job with what they had to work with. I would love for an in-season “wildcard†to be awarded, but there is no feasible way of doing this. Maybe our IHSAA Commissioner will give us a weigh-in exemption and we can do this…hint hint Mr. Faulkens!
Suggestions
While the IHSWCA did a great job and hit a home run with this event, I feel that they are still not even close to what this event can be. Here are a few suggestions that they will hopefully look at for the future.
Facilities
Westfield has great facilities that 99% of the schools in the state are jealous of, but the place was cramped on the floor. The IHSWCA should look into having the event at a place like the Pepsi Coliseum at the fairgrounds. That would add a lot of flare to the event and give it more prestige with it being held outside of a high school.
Team Entry Fee
It seems weird for the IHSWCA to invite a team, then charge them to enter the event. What about waiving or reducing the entry fee if a team sells X amount of presale tickets? This is a great way for teams to save money and get more fans to the event. This would also be a great way for teams to recoup some of their expenses if the IHSWCA would give teams a cut of their sales after X number of tickets sold.
Promotion
This is where I feel the IHSWCA really dropped the ball. This event should have been shoved down the throats of the fans of the sport since the start of practice in late October. Â Have someone create a webpage(not in MS Word) with all the information for the event. Maybe ask some person at IndianaMat for a banner ad and other promotional help, they seemed to do well with that preseason event in September.
Sponsors
Need more sponsors! This is a great event and there seemed to be a lack of sponsors. Sponsors could help with securing a facility like the Pepsi Coliseum and reduce team travel expenses. Hotel sponsors would love to give a reduced rate for people attending the event. Restaurants would love to hand out coupons and such. The list goes on and these companies would love to have acknowledgement during the event.

3582012/2013 Genius Ratings Potential
From the desk of Maligned:
Most data through December 8 matches is included. Â All ratings should be taken very lightly until more connections can be made between schools. Especially any school with less than five in the "competitions" column should be considered quite inaccurate at this point. Also, we're still filtering out some post-football results that may accidentally be here and shouldn't.
Remember that POTENTIAL is based on point results only (not wins and losses) and is a much stronger predictor of future success than is a wins/losses based rating.
No strength of schedule data is included at this point because it is a virtually useless calculation until more matches are wrestled.
Enjoy!

PERRY MERIDIAN TOPS FIRST STATE WRESTLING POLL
Two-time defending state champion Perry Meridian is ranked No. 1 in the season’s first high school wrestling rankings.
With many teams heading to their opening matches this weekend, the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association (IHSWCA) has tabbed the Falcons as the team to beat when all is said and done next February.
Perry Meridian defeated Crown Point, 43-14, in the final match of the IHSAA’s state dual meet series last Feb. 25.
The IHSAA has since ended its dual meet tournament and will decide this season’s state champ at the individual finals on Feb. 15-16, 2013.
The Falcons are loaded once again, with nine returning starters, six returning state meet qualifiers and five returning state place winners.
Long-time powerhouse Evansville Mater Dei is ranked No. 2 in the first coaches poll. Rounding out the top five are Indianapolis Cathedral, Merrillville and Crown Point.
Rankings are determined by a vote of coaches’ representatives around the state.

631Boiler Elite Wrestling Club Opens RTS Practices on Sunday
Sunday marks the first official event of the BEWC’s Regional Training Site status.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Boiler Elite Wrestling Club begins a new era this weekend, hosting its first USA Wrestling Regional Training Site (RTS) event on Sunday in the Blake Wrestling Center at Purdue University’s Lambert Fieldhouse. The practice is scheduled to run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and will be run by Boiler Elite RTS director Chris Fleeger.
“This weekend is a big step for the Boiler Elite Wrestling Club and for wrestling in the state of Indiana,†said Fleeger. “We’re excited to establish a new standard of wrestling and develop the best wrestlers in this part of the country. This is the first step in that process.â€
To attend Sunday’s practice and other RTS events, a wrestler must meet one of three specified criteria set by USA Wrestling. An individual must have won at least one match at a USA World or Olympic team trials, have placed top-eight at USA Senior Open, University, Junior, Fila Junior or Cadet Nationals, or have placed in the top-four in their state’s high school championships.
For more information on Sunday’s practice or the Boiler Elite Wrestling Club’s Regional Training Site status, please contact Boiler Elite assistant coach Dan Bedoy at (219) 793-2424 or dbedoy@purdue.edu .
376FILA Cadet World Championships with Sliga and Miracle
Testing yourself against the best in the country is relatively easy with tournaments like the Super 32, Fargo, FloNationals, USAW Folkstyle Nationals, and so on, but testing yourself against the best in the world is a rarity. This week two Indiana high school stars will get to see what it is like to wrestle the best in the world. State Champion Mitch Sliga and Kayla Miracle are in Baku, Azerbaijan to wrestle in the FILA Cadet World Championships. Both won their respective weight classes at the FILA Cadet Nationals to earn this trip.
Sliga is a five-time Cadet National champion and is on his first overseas trip. He captured his first state title this year along with the FILA Cadet title. He also placed 8th at the FILA Junior championships against wrestlers aged 18-20 years old. Sliga will wrestle in the 85 kg/187.25 lbs weight class against many of the future young stars of the sport. He is schedule to wrestle on Tuesday August 21.
Miracle is making her second straight trip to the World Championships as last year she finished 9th in the world at this event. This year she became the first female to quality for the IHSAA state championships, where she dropped her first round bout to the eventual 3rd place finisher Hayden Lee. After the high school season she has tore up the competition in the women’s division. She has only suffered one loss this spring and summer and is looking to ride the high of winning a Junior National Championship into this event. She is scheduled to wrestle on Thursday August 23 and is wrestling in the 56 kg/123.25 lbs weight class.
Good luck to both of these fine competitors as they embark on a journey that will have a lifetime impression upon them. Follow IndianaMat  and TheMat.com on Twitter and Facebook for updates throughout the week.

384Winfield Leads Three Junior All-Americans
Donte Winfield lost a close 1-0, 1-0 to Michigan's Adam Coon in the finals to lead a trio of All-Americans in Junior Freestyle. Coon won a Cadet World Championship last year and is ranked as one of the top wrestlers in the class of 2013. In the championship match, Coon scored on a push-out in each period to get the victory. Neither wrestler was ever in much position to score otherwise.
