Wabash Wrestling Tabbed Third in Preseason Poll

    Wrestling | 11/5/2014 5:17:00 AM
    | Brent Harris

Wabash is ranked third nationally in the 2014-15 preseason rankings released by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

While appreciative of earning a place in the top-three positions, this Little Giant team has only one spot that on their mind --- finishing as national champions.

"I think the number-three ranking says we're doing the right things as a program," Wabash head coach Brian Andersonsaid. "Our expectation this year is to get a qualifier to nationals in all 10 weight classes. If we do that and compete the way I expect us to, we could bring a very special trophy back to this school. We need to stay focused on our efforts week in and week out by making progress individually. If we do that, everything else will take care of itself."

Wabash received 28 total points in the preseason poll conducted the NWCA. The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater was the top selection with 31 points. Messiah College earned 29 points for second. Delaware Valley College sits in fourth with 27 points, followed by Coe College in fifth with 21 points. The Little Giant wrestling team's social media efforts continue to be rewarded, as well. Wabash ranks 22nd in the first NWCA/Elite Level Sports Marketing Best of Brand Rankings.

Last year Wabash sent six wrestlers to nationals, including four returning competitors who are listed in the top-10 individual rankings to open the season. Tommy Poynter is ranked ninth at 125 pounds to open the year. Conner Lefever is listed third at 174 pounds. Reece Lefever, who earned All-America honors for the second consecutive season with a fourth-place finish at 157 pounds, is ranked third in that weight class to open the season. Riley Lefever claimed the first national championship for a Wabash wrestler by winning the 184-pound weight class in his freshman season. He earned d3wrestle.com Freshman of the Year honors and is picked number one in the preseason rankings at 184 pounds.

"Having four returning wrestlers who competed at nationals sets a great tone for our team," Anderson said. "The other wrestlers on our team realize qualifying for nationals is an attainable goal."

Wabash finished ninth overall in the team scoring at last year's national championship meet. Reece Lefever knows this year's preseason ranking is more tribute than reality.

"It's cool to be ranked third and receive that type of recognition for what we accomplished last year," Reece Lefever said. "But our goal this year is not to get third, it's to finish first. That's what we're training for this season. We know we wrestle against top-level competition every week. That will help us get ready for nationals this year, as well."

Reece's twin brother, Conner, and younger brother, Riley, understand the tone the veteran members of the team need to provide to the team if the Little Giants are going to achieve their goal of ten qualifiers.

"I'm trying to lead by example this year," Conner Lefever said. "I'm not the type of guy who talks a lot, but I want to work hard in practice and do the extra things that are necessary to qualify for nationals and earn a place on the podium as a national champion."

"Our motto this year is 'One Vision'," Riley Lefever added. "The fact we're ranked third changes nothing. It's definitely a sign of respect for what we accomplished as a team last season, but this is a new season. The coaches have stressed having the veteran wrestlers work with the younger wrestlers to show them the level of effort it takes to earn that place at nationals."

Poynter expects nothing to be easy this season as he charts a course to return to nationals and a chance to earn All-America honors and a national title in his senior season.

"I need to keep working hard this year just like I did last year," he said. "I'm working to be a good student-athlete here at Wabash, represent the College and our team both academically and on the mat. I feel a tremendous responsibility. I am trying to do all the right things to show hard work and perseverance can help achieve those goals."

The path back to nationals starts next Thursday when the Little Giants face Olivet College. The dual meet will take place at Carroll High School in Fort Wayne at 7 p.m. Prior to the official start of the season, the Little Giants will compete in the annual Red-White duals Friday night at 6:30 p.m.

    Green, Preston Ranked by NWCA

ANGOLA, IND.-- Trine wrestlers Mack Green and Brandon Preston are both nationally-ranked in the first National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III rankings.
A reigning All-American, Green (Buchanan, Mich./Buchanan) is ranked third in the Heavyweight division. Preston (Logansport, Ind./Logansport) is ranked ninth among 133-lb wrestlers. Each wrestler appeared in the NCAA Division III National Championships last season. Green earned All-American recognition with a fifth-place finish, while Preston finished with a 1-2 record at the national meet. The NWCA ranks the top 10 wrestlers in each class throughout the season.

Green concluded last season with a 33-8 record. That mark was good enough for Green to tie for the third-highest win total in a season in school-history. The senior placed first at both the Mid-States Tournament and Trine University Invitational. A 5-2 performance in the National Championships capped off his junior season with All-America honors.
Defending-National Champion James Buss of Loras College, and reigning third-place finisher Zach Roseberry of Delaware Valley are the only two wrestlers ranked ahead of Green.
Preston battled through injuries and was still able to earn a National Championship berth last season, as he concluded the year with a 25-15 record. Included in that record were five wins by pin, two by tech fall and five by major decision. Preston has appeared in the National Championships at both the 125-lb and 133-lb weight classes.
Also included among last season's highlights for Preston was a first-place finish in the Ohio Northern Invitational, and a second-place finish at the Mid-States Tournament.
Trine opens the season Saturday, Nov. 8 at Muskegon (Mich.) Community College's Ben McMullen Open. The Thunder will host the Trine Invitational Saturday, Nov. 15 at 10 a.m.

Kieffers ranked individually in 1st Wrestling Coaches poll

EDMOND, Okla.- In the first edition of the NCAA Division Wrestling Coaches Association poll of the 2014-15 season, UIndy wrestling is receiving votes as a team, while brothers Josh Kieffer and Justin Kieffer both earned individual rankings in their respective weight classes.
Josh Kieffer earned the #5 spot at 125, returning down to the lightest weight class after wrestling at 133 a season ago. An All-American (6th) at 125 two seasons ago, Josh is a two-time national qualifier for the Greyhounds heading into his third season wrestling for Head Coach Jason Warthan.

Justin Kieffer is ranked #6 at 141, where he was the Super Region #2 champion a season ago. Also a two-time national qualifier for the Greyhounds, Justin will most likely redshirt this season.

As a team, UIndy is just outside the top 20, receiving votes in the preseason edition of the poll. The Greyhounds posted their best-ever NCAA Division II finish a season ago, taking eighth at the NCAA Division II National Championships behind four senior All-Americans in Alex Johns (125), Cameryn Brady (149), Jeff Weiss (165) and Evan Wooding (285). UIndy returns just three starters from a season ago, including both Kieffer brothers and 2014 national qualifier Shelden Struble.

Maryville topped the team rankings, followed by Ouachita Baptist, Nebraska-Kearney, Notre Dame (OH) and St. Cloud State.

The Greyhounds kick off the 2014-15 season officially Nov. 15 at the Trine Invitational, but will show off this year's team Saturday at their Intersquad/Alumni Roll Around. Wrestling begins at 2:00 p.m. in the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center on three mats.

    Mr. Gorilla Award
    2404

    Mr. Gorilla Award Information

IndianaMat.com has decided to sponsor an award honoring the state's top senior wrestler. Most of the other high school sports already are honoring their top seniors and we felt that 2015 would be the right time to present such an award for wrestling.

IndianaMat will start things off by publishing a watch list of senior contenders for the award (i.e. Heisman watch) in early November. We will then pare this list down to approximately fifteen wrestlers after the team state duals and holiday tournaments and then further refine the list prior to sectionals.

The criteria for selection will be left intentionally vague as we want a variety of opinions as to who the voters think is the best wrestler. Some general criteria that can be considered is listed here:
    1. Must be a senior
    2. Undefeated/fewest losses. A midseason loss would not disqualify a wrestler.
    3. Domination. Number of pins, tech falls
    4. Level of competition.
    5. Body of work previous to senior year. State and national resume.
    6. Character
    7. Grades

Any, or all of these may, or may not, be taken into consideration by the voters when making their selections. We have chosen 39 voters to make this selection because we value their knowledge and experience regarding Indiana high school wrestling.

    Purdue Announces 2014-15 Schedule

    Sept. 10, 2014
    2014-15 SCHEDULE

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Eight home duals highlight an 18-dual slate for Purdue wrestling in 2014-15. In addition to duals against familiar foes from the Big Ten Conference, the nation's toughest wrestling conference, the Boilermakers' non-conference schedule features valuable competition from across the country for first-year head coach Tony Ersland's squad.

"I think overall the schedule does set up nicely for us," Ersland said. "It's always nice to see people from other areas of the country because the wrestling varies, so I think it's good to get out of the Midwest and go see some different people. I think we'll see a lot of good individuals to help us see where we are at early on.

"The amount of home duals is huge for us," Ersland continued. "We have a couple early so we can get people in the doors to see what the team is going to look like, what they are going to be, and hopefully that will capture their interest and they'll come back in February, when we have some really great competition. That's when they'll have an extended period of time to watch their team, which is what you want to build your home fan base."

Purdue opens its season Nov. 14 at Cal Poly. The trip to San Luis Obispo, Calif., will be the first for the Boilermakers since 2006 and a return for assistant coach Tyrel Todd, who served as an assistant coach for the Mustangs during the 2010-11 season. Purdue will make the most of its time in California by competing in Cal State Bakersfield's Road Runner Open two days later in Fresno.
Ersland's squad will make its home debut with a pair of duals against Northern Iowa and Indiana Tech on Nov. 23. After a one-year hiatus, Purdue returns to the Journeymen/ASICS Northeast Duals Nov. 29 in Troy, N.Y. The 16-team event features three duals, with the Old Gold and Black set to square off against Missouri, Binghamton and Old Dominion.

"It does look like, from a training stand point, we get tested a little bit at the [Journeymen/ASICS] Northeast Duals," Ersland said. "Obviously Missouri is pretty tough and Old Dominion has some good individuals as well. Our early schedule gives sets us up to be able to have a really good evaluation of where we are at heading into Midlands, where we are really going to be tested and then heading into the Big Ten schedule."

Three duals and a classic winter tournament are on the docket in December. Purdue hosts SIU-Edwardsville Dec. 6 before traveling to Chattanooga, Tenn., for duals against North Carolina and the Mocs on Dec. 12. Although it's the sixth meeting all-time between Chattanooga and the Boilermakers, it will be the first time they've traveled to the Mocs home mat. The 52nd Annual Ken Craft Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill., close out the first half of the season Dec. 29-30.

The nation's premier wrestling conference will be on full display as the focus shifts to the rigorous Big Ten schedule. Five of Purdue's six duals in January will be on the road, with Ersland and assistant coach Zach Tanelli making their return to Nebraska (Jan. 9) and Wisconsin (Jan. 11), respectively. The Boilermakers follow with a battle against Northwestern in Holloway Gymnasium on Jan. 16 and two days later they'll be in University Park, Pa., to dual four-time NCAA team champ Penn State Jan. 18. The final two-dual weekend has Purdue making its first of two trips to Columbus, Ohio, to take on the Buckeyes on Jan. 30 and return home for a Feb. 1 clash against Illinois.

"We're hit heavy in January, so we really need to have a really good training cycle coming off of Midlands; we'll have to have a good couple of weeks of training there because we won't train as much in January, but I do like where that leads us in February," Ersland said. "There we are down to one dual meet a week and we are at home the entire month. That gives us a good opportunity to train and peak as we get ready to go into Big Tens."

The three remaining duals will all be at home as the Boilermakers host Michigan (Feb. 8), Michigan State (Feb. 15) and close out the dual season against in-state rival Indiana in a Friday night showdown on Feb. 20.

A 15-day break awaits Purdue's grapplers before embarking upon what could be considered the toughest tournament in the nation, the Big Ten Championships.

"That stretch is huge because that's where you're looking to make another jump as a team, that's where you're peaking," Ersland explained. "You're really looking hard at your training cycles there and what you need to do because it might be that you need rest and recovery with the guys, let them get fresh and then come back and train hard. I think it's very important that you get out of February with your guys still hungry to compete, still hungry to train, because everyone knows that you make your living in March at Big Tens and NCAAs. This allows us to do that."
Familiarity will be a key factor as the postseason gets underway March 7-8. Just one month after traveling to Columbus for the Ohio State dual, Ersland's Boilermakers will return for the Big Ten Championships.

"Big Tens in Columbus will be nice because it's a close trip for us," Ersland said. "The guys should be comfortable since we have a dual there earlier in the season. They will know what to expand and how to handle things."

Success at Big Tens punches a ticket to the NCAA Championships in a location all-too familiar and welcoming for wrestling, the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo. The three-day tournament, held March 19-21, returns to St. Louis for the seventh time since 2000. It's a place where Ersland, Tanelli and Todd have found success on the biggest stage.

"NCAAs in St. Louis is always attractive," Ersland said. "We've been there a number of times so I think everyone is familiar with the layout, the setup and what it's going to be. From a familiarity standpoint, it should be good for us, there should be no confusion where you're going to cut weight or where the hotels are, things like that that you want your athletes to know and feel good about."

    IHPO 2014 Recap

Wrestling is a sport that can easily humble someone. This weekend I was quite humbled by what this little tournament has become. Four years ago we started this tournament with 171 wrestlers. In all honesty, I was very close to cancelling the event due to low entries. We started with four mats and some awesome matches….I was in awe of the talent there at the time. Of course that was four years ago and if you would have told me we would have 120+ state placers and qualifiers battling it out on 12 mats I would have laughed.

This event has grown into more than a Super 32 qualifier. It is an annual pilgrimage to the Fort Wayne area for some great wrestling action in September. Think about that, 586 wrestlers coming to Fort Wayne to wrestle…IN SEPTEMBER!

Obviously there are many, many, many people to thank for help in what this event has become.

The referees: We had an awesome group yet again and they did a great job making all the right calls…well from my point of view.
College coaches: Thanks to all those that came this way to see the great wrestling going on. It is a privilege to be able to host this event and hope to see many of the IHPO wrestlers on college rosters soon.

Paul Tincher and Steve Asa: They were there for a big portion of the day taking photos. Look for them to be posted soon on Facebook.

Mark Durham, Pat Culp, and Kyle Keith: The Trackwrestling gurus made my life a lot easier this year. Even when we had our unscheduled intermission they had us back up extremely quickly. They have ran more tournaments that I can even dream of and deserve a ton of credit for how smoothly it ran.

Steve Saxlund and Todd Fuller of 3x Gear: These guys are first class all the way and came all the way from Fargo to set up shop. Their gear was sick to say the least. They will definitely be a permanent fixture at the IHPO.

Scott Raypole: Another person who does a ton of work for this event. He does a ton of behind the scenes and organizational things that no one notices. As with the others, without him it would be extremely difficult to pull this off without him.

Carroll parents and wrestlers: To say this is an awesome group of people is an understatement. They come in droves asking how they can help. The wrestlers and parents had 12 mats laid down in 2.5 hours on Saturday…even when a few of the kids were a tad hungry. As on the wrestling mat these people always rise to the occasion.

Dan Ginder: The Carroll Athletic Director is absolutely awesome. He lets us use these first class facilities for this great event. He even came in this morning to help get the bouts on the TVs working better. As with everything at Carroll he is first class all the way.

Trine wrestlers: The thankless job of being a tableworker with two restroom breaks and given a couple waters and small sandwich during the 10 hours. They did a great job even with some hiccups during the day. I can say there were no complaints from the kids or any coaches/wrestlers.

Mark Snyder: He is one that has been there since the beginning and is an awesome concession manager. It is great when I have absolutely no worries when it comes to that area.

Lastly, but definitely not least my wrestling tournament assistant director Alexis. Six years ago she had never even been to a wrestling match and now she is a tournament queen. As with other areas in life she keeps me in line and keeps me organized. Much of the smoothness of the weigh-ins can be attributed to her.

Well…one last thanks, that is to all the coaches, wrestlers and fans who came to the event. Without you guys it wouldn’t be what it is today. If you have any suggestions please don’t hesitate to send them my way. We always take them into consideration when planning for next year.

Zach Tanelli Added to Purdue Staff

    Aug. 13, 2014

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue head wrestling coach Tony Ersland has assembled another piece of his staff with the hiring of Zach Tanelli as an assistant coach. Tanelli, who is no stranger to the Big Ten Conference as a 2009 All-American at Wisconsin, joins the Boilermaker wrestling program after a five-year coaching stint at Hofstra.

"I was really impressed with Zach when he talked about the importance of being in a role of mentoring and guiding young men," Ersland said. "He's got the right mindset as a coach and we're very much in line with the school of thought in mentoring. A coaches' role goes beyond wrestling. With him, it's always about the student-athletes first. It's about serving them and I have a sense that is very important to him.

"Zach has had to wear a lot of different hats at Hofstra and has done a lot of different things. He's been put in a lot of different situations and scenarios during his coaching career. That's what I also like about him. His experience is going to be invaluable to us moving forward.

"We now have a staff with goals and expectations for this program to take it to the next level," Ersland said. "There's no doubt that Tyrel [Todd], Zach and I are all on the same page and are going to put in the work necessary to get there. I'm excited to get to work with these guys."

During his tenure at Hofstra, Tanelli worked his way up the coaching ranks and most recently served as interim head coach. He was the head assistant coach for the two previous seasons after spending his first three years as an assistant coach with the Pride.

The former Badger made an impact throughout Hofstra's lineup, particularly in the lower weights. Tanelli coached four All-Americans in Steve Bonanno (125), Lou Ruggirello (133), Justin Accordino (149) and P.J. Gillespie (165). The Pride won three-straight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) team titles (2011-13) before moving to the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) in 2013-14, where they placed fourth with two finalists, including the 165-pound champion, Joseph Booth.

While in the CAA, seven Hofstra grapplers claimed tournament crowns under the guidance of Tanelli, including a pair of two-time champs in Bonanno and 184-pounder Ben Clymer. Jamie Franco (133), Luke Vaith (141), Gillespie (149), Ryan Patrovich (174) and Paul Snyder (HWT) were also titlists for Tanelli.

Tanelli wrestled the first three years of his Badger career at 133 pounds and bumped up to 141 for his senior campaign in 2009. He was a two-time NCAA qualifier at 133 and earned a spot on the 141 podium with a fourth-place finish for All-America accolades. During his senior season, Tanelli went on a blaze, owning a 31-6 record, including a spotless 7-0 mark against Big Ten foes. He was ranked No. 1 at his weight for the second half of the 2008-09 season after winning the 141-pound Midlands Championships title and was bestowed with the Champion of Champions Award.

Tanelli was a three-time Big Ten Championships placewinner and improved upon his finish each year. As a sophomore, he placed eighth at 133, followed by a fifth-place finish as a junior. Tanelli then took second at 141 as a senior.

During his career at Wisconsin, Tanelli compiled an 88-31 record with a blistering .967 winning percentage. He won 44 percent of his matches with bonus points, registering 15 major decisions, 13 falls and 11 technical falls.

    Three All-Americans Lead Junior Freestyle

The last day of Fargo brought home three All-Americans in the Junior Freestyle event. Kingsman Drew Hildebrandt led the team with a runner-up performance at 106lbs. Two Fort Wayne Semi-State wrestlers, Garrett Pepple and Fletcher Miller were the other All-Americans.
Hildebrandt started out the morning wrestling in the finals against Arizona’s Daniel Vega. Vega was seeking an elusive Junior Triple Crown. Hildebrandt was close to scoring multiple times on a knee pull single, but was stymied by Vega’s defense. Hildebrandt dropped the match 12-1 to bring home the silver medal.

Kendallville’s finest, Garrett Pepple was on the mat for 7th place at 113lbs. The two-time state runner-up had a very good tournament when you consider his lack of international style experience. He dropped his 7th place match to Dorian Sapien of Idaho 11-1. Pepple’s losses were to the 1st, 5th, and 7th place finishers.

Fletcher Miller was the only returning Junior All-American to make his way back to Fargo this year. He also had an impressive tournament only losing to the champion, 3rd place finisher, and 5th place finisher. As a testament to how tough the tournament is, the defending champion at 220lbs did not even place this year.

Junior 106 - Drew Hildebrandt's place is 2nd and has scored 7.00 team points.
1st Place Match - Danny Vega (Arizona) won by tech fall over Drew Hildebrandt (Indiana) (TF 12-1)

Paul Konrath, Chad Red, and Nick Lee Finish on Top

Konrath, Red, and Lee Finish on Top

Friday was a phenomenal day for Indiana wrestling when three champions were crowned in the Cadet Freestyle National Championships. This is only the second time Indiana has had three champions in any age group and style. Back in 1993, Tim Myers, James Leavell, and Chris Snyder captured titles for Indiana. This year’s terrific trio looked solid all tournament long and wrestled amazing throughout the tougher rounds. Along with the champions, Kobe Woods finished as runner-up and Evan Eldred was 7th at 132lbs. With those performances the team placed 5th in the standings.

The afternoon started off with Paul Konrath at 106lbs for Indiana. Konrath had takedowns early and late in the first period to have a 4-0 lead at halftime. With about 30 seconds left Konrath and his opponent, Ian Timmins, traded a 2 and 2 for a 6-2 lead in favor of Konrath. Another late takedown sealed the championship for Konrath and the final score of 8-2. This is his second championship as he won the USAW Folkstyle title in April.

Next up was the always exciting Chad Red. Many had to wonder if there would be a letdown after beating highly touted Taylor Lamont last night. Red had a formidable opponent in Jaden Enriquez of California who was seeking the Triple Crown. Red was warned early for passivity and gave up a point for not scoring during the shot clock in the first period. With neither wrestler really threatening to score, Enriquez was up 1-0 after the first stanza. With just over a minute left Red finally finished a takedown to take a 2-1 lead. Red was immediately back in on the legs and got his second takedown with 35 seconds left in the match. He surrendered a late takedown to make the final score 4-3. Red had a super impressive tournament in one of the highlight weight classes of the event.

It will probably take longer to read the recap of Nick Lee’s finals match than the actual match took. Lee was on fire all tournament long and he didn’t let up in the finals. His opponent was Jamie Hernandez of Illinois who was a surprise finalist. Lee racked up a quick takedown and three turns to make it 7-0 after about 20 seconds of action. Lee then got two more takedowns to secure the tech fall at the 1:16 mark of the first period. Lee had seven tech falls during the tournament in his seven matches. He was also named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament with his performance.

Evan Eldred of Westfield made quick work of Ryan Epps of Minnesota in getting the 11-0 tech fall in the first period. Eldred had an impressive tournament and will be one to watch this winter.

Kobe Woods was the last wrestler for the Cadets to take the mat. He had his summer nemesis Matt Stencel of Ohio to battle in the finals. Woods was down 4-0 in the first period before he tied the match just before halftime. In the second period Stencel ran off 9 straight points to clinch the win. Woods had an impressive run winning USAW Folkstyle Nationals this past April, placing 7th in Greco-Roman, and runner-up in Freestyle.

The Juniors ran into the nitty gritty of wrestling this morning. Matches with podium spots at stake always bring out the best in everyone and the Indiana boys did not disappoint. After the dust had settled three Indiana wrestlers made it to the final morning of wrestling. Drew Hildebrandt will be wrestling for a national title, while Fletcher Miller will be wrestling for 5th, and Garrett Pepple wrestling for 7th.

Hildebrandt started the day off with a big win over Kirk Johansen of Illinois and kept rolling with two more solid wins. In the quarters he defeated Howard Smith of Texas 8-7 and in the semi-finals he took care of New York’s Kelan McKenna 6-3. He is the second Hildebrandt to make the finals this week as his sister Sarah made the World Team Trials final on Monday.

Garrett Pepple took the scenic route to placement after dropping his first match of the day to a tough Jack Mueller. He went on to tech Greco runner-up Corbin Nirschel of Kansas in the consolations to put him in position to place. His blood round match was not easy as he was down by six points in the first period, but came back to beat Tennessee’s Torbio Navarro. He lost his next match to rival Benny Gomez of Michigan and will be wrestling for 7th tomorrow morning.

Fletcher Miller ran into a beast in the quarter-finals in Iowa’s Marcus Harrington. Harrington was a two-time state champ and signed to wrestle for the Iowa State Cylones. Miller didn’t have much time to sulk in his loss as he was back on the mat 15 minutes later wrestling for a spot on the podium. He made quick work of John Jayne to earn his second Fargo placement. Miller went on to defeat Patrick Grayson, but lost to Kentucky stud Austin Meyers in his last match of the day. Miller will wrestle for 5th tomorrow.

Fantastic Four Lead the Cadets on Day Six

The last time Indiana had more three or more wrestlers in the finals of any event at Fargo most of the current wrestlers were entering kindergarten or in pre-school. Back in 2003 Indiana had a terrific trio of Matt Coughlin, Angel Escobedo and Alex Tsirtsis in the finals of Junior Freestyle event. This year Indiana has four in the finals of Cadet Freestyle in Paul Konrath, Chad Red, Nick Lee and Kobe Woods. Also making the podium is Evan Eldred who will wrestle for 7th tomorrow afternoon.

Konrath got the ball rolling with a 1-0 match in the semi-finals. His only point was due to a passivity on his opponent. Even with the lack of scoring the match had quite a few scrambles and each wrestler was in position to score numerous times.

Chad Red had lost to Taylor Lamont three times in the past year. Last year at Fargo Lamont pinned Red in freestyle and as recent as last month Lamont defeated him in both freestyle and Greco. However, today was Red’s day as he used two takedowns in the first period to garner enough to hold off the reigning freestyle national champion.

Nick Lee has been a machine all tournament long and in the semi-finals he rose to the occasion against Eric Hong of Pennsylvania. Hong is a prep national champion and was considered by some to be the favorite in this weight class. Lee’s relentless pressure broke Hong midway through the second period when he got the tech fall.

Kobe Woods isn’t afraid of seeking the best competition as he has had a rigorous schedule since February. It has paid off with his second trip to the national finals. He took care of Michigan’s Wyatt Harden by tech fall late in the match.

Evan Eldred has gone the scenic route to the podium after losing his third match he battled back to win three matches to secure placement. He will have Ryan Epps of Minnesota in his placement match.

The finals match-ups for the Indiana wrestlers will be tough as always. Konrath will have Ian Timmins of Nevada. Timmins is a Nevada state champion and won the Cadet Greco-Roman title just a couple days ago. Red will have Jaden Enriquez of California in the finals. Enriquez is looking for the Triple Crown and placed in both style last year at Fargo. He placed 4th at 132lbs in the California state tournament. Nick Lee will have Jamie Hernandez of Illinois in the finals. There is little info on Hernandez, he did not qualify for state in Illinois and was 2-2 in Greco at the Cadet Duals. Kobe Woods will have a familiar foe in the finals in Ohio’s Matt Stencil. At the Cadet Duals they traded wins with Woods winning in Greco and Stencil in Freestyle. Stencil however won the rubber match earlier this week in Greco.

The Junior Freestyle team got off to a great start on the first day. Six wrestlers are still in the championship bracket. They are currently in the round of 16 and will have to win two more on the championship side to secure placement. Indiana has five still alive in the consolations and they are four matches from placement.
Leading the way are the mighty mites Drew Hildebrandt and Garrett Pepple. Fargo veterans Brandon James, Randy Scott, Fletcher Miller are also in the championship along with Jacob Aven. In the consolations are Anthony Williams, Ben Harvey, Scottie Sopko, Dylan Lydy, and Nick Joyner. Both Harvey and Lydy had tough first round matches and are battling back through the consolations.
