Fantastic Four Lead the Cadets on Day Six

The last time Indiana had more three or more wrestlers in the finals of any event at Fargo most of the current wrestlers were entering kindergarten or in pre-school. Back in 2003 Indiana had a terrific trio of Matt Coughlin, Angel Escobedo and Alex Tsirtsis in the finals of Junior Freestyle event. This year Indiana has four in the finals of Cadet Freestyle in Paul Konrath, Chad Red, Nick Lee and Kobe Woods. Also making the podium is Evan Eldred who will wrestle for 7th tomorrow afternoon.

Konrath got the ball rolling with a 1-0 match in the semi-finals. His only point was due to a passivity on his opponent. Even with the lack of scoring the match had quite a few scrambles and each wrestler was in position to score numerous times.

Chad Red had lost to Taylor Lamont three times in the past year. Last year at Fargo Lamont pinned Red in freestyle and as recent as last month Lamont defeated him in both freestyle and Greco. However, today was Red’s day as he used two takedowns in the first period to garner enough to hold off the reigning freestyle national champion.

Nick Lee has been a machine all tournament long and in the semi-finals he rose to the occasion against Eric Hong of Pennsylvania. Hong is a prep national champion and was considered by some to be the favorite in this weight class. Lee’s relentless pressure broke Hong midway through the second period when he got the tech fall.

Kobe Woods isn’t afraid of seeking the best competition as he has had a rigorous schedule since February. It has paid off with his second trip to the national finals. He took care of Michigan’s Wyatt Harden by tech fall late in the match.

Evan Eldred has gone the scenic route to the podium after losing his third match he battled back to win three matches to secure placement. He will have Ryan Epps of Minnesota in his placement match.

The finals match-ups for the Indiana wrestlers will be tough as always. Konrath will have Ian Timmins of Nevada. Timmins is a Nevada state champion and won the Cadet Greco-Roman title just a couple days ago. Red will have Jaden Enriquez of California in the finals. Enriquez is looking for the Triple Crown and placed in both style last year at Fargo. He placed 4th at 132lbs in the California state tournament. Nick Lee will have Jamie Hernandez of Illinois in the finals. There is little info on Hernandez, he did not qualify for state in Illinois and was 2-2 in Greco at the Cadet Duals. Kobe Woods will have a familiar foe in the finals in Ohio’s Matt Stencil. At the Cadet Duals they traded wins with Woods winning in Greco and Stencil in Freestyle. Stencil however won the rubber match earlier this week in Greco.

They are currently in the round of 16 and will have to win two more on the championship side to secure placement. Indiana has five still alive in the consolations and they are four matches from placement.

Leading the way are the mighty mites Drew Hildebrandt and Garrett Pepple. Fargo veterans Brandon James, Randy Scott, Fletcher Miller are also in the championship along with Jacob Aven. In the consolations are Anthony Williams, Ben Harvey, Scottie Sopko, Dylan Lydy, and Nick Joyner. Both Harvey and Lydy had tough first round matches and are battling back through the consolations.
